i'm trying to light my scene in three ways, morning afternoon and night... and i wanna work with all the light setups in the same scent..

i tried putting the morning lights in a layer of its own, and so on for the other two light setups. then when i render even if the layer that the lights are on still lights the scene...all the layers containing light are used in the render... ??!??

Yeah, its wierd. I've found that making lights visible/invisible has no effect on their use in the render. But hide/show does turn them on/off as far as rendering goes.

Why not simply group your light sets and then use the outliner to select as a group to hide/show them as needed.
