'Zakoo's First Flight'
Hi everyone, my entry will be based on a little alien called Zakoo, nervously embarking on his very first spaceship flight. Watched by his family and pets, he'll be on the launch pad attempting takeoff, and in the background will be a huge alien city with spacecraft flying in the air, with planet earth in the sky for a bit of fun. character design isn't finalised, but I'll be aiming to bring out familiar 'human' elements in their personality.(thanks to soapy for helping me decide on an idea!)
look forward to workshopping this one with you all. and good luck to everyone
cheers,shakes

How about a tongue hanging out and a slight tilt of the head.
Dogs are daft IMO.
Is lollop a word? If it is, then this dog lollops around.........

Sir shakes... :) if you remove that top "third eye" of the cat.. you can sell it to a petfoodcompany that make diet-catfood... and they can use it as a before the cat eat there dietfood image... :p I use to buy diet-catfood for my to fatty turtle a couple years ago, those cartons was so boring... if this cat would be on in, I would have bought tons of that... and my turtle had to be fat anyway... haha...

Ha! What a great job of modeling on your alien character. I love the design, and you've really captured a sense of mass with the folds and creases in the flesh. I like the eye texture as well, but the eyeball itself could use a bit more of a glaze to it. Just a suggestion though, it looks fantastic as it is. Alexi.

Here's how I make all my cartoon models. I find it much quicker starting with a sphere, roughing it into the shape with the magnet, then adding the loops to suit. As with most of my stuff, I prefer not to use a reference sketch,I just start with a rough idea in my head and go from there!

The sphere modeling system works well for you shakes. Have you tried the other types of spheres besides the regular one? Sometimes the part where all the polys come into one point can be a buggar to map. Of course in this case it doesnt show so who cares..

Those are GREAT characters. It seems that you are having fun creating them, and the important thing is that the fun shows on the final result. I also dig your process of having an idea and jumping right into modeling. This makes 3D modeling a conceptualization and execution medium. it short of like doodling on clay. Hahah, that sounds fun, I am in. But I haven't made any pets yet, but there are some pets in the plans, the Snakelords will have lots of snakes.
Ha! Now that's a plan for sure! We might run into some scale problems though - since mine are almost invisible ... maybe the skratching result of them would be all to be seen? :D
This challenge is so different - I see cute looking pets everywhere, and not a single spaceship, cool:)
So, John - a Threeheaded snail up next, huh? I bet it'll be fat :D

ziriguidum:thanks Rodolfo..glad you find em funny- it's fun making them!

Oweron: cheers mate! happy you found it helpful-I hadn't done a snail before so it took longer than I thought..but the shell was surprisingly easy-I just used the magnet tool alot. as for the eyes- there was always going to be four, I just didn't want to make them individually- the front were copy /welded
Seven:hi Jon- thanks for looking..glad you like them

hi shakes, your work is amazing untill now but i suggest something for the snail it looks now a bit metalic i think it is because of the reflection you did to the shell and the specularity is high for it, and the body of the snail looks metalic because you used bright colors with bump and specular which gives the feeling of metal that is painted with a jet painter, i suggest you lower the brightness of colors and enhance specularity with adding a lower layer for translucency...
of course the whole snail still looks great.
