first tonal study for the idea...

in the foreground there's gonna be sexy broads to symbolize that alot of ppl around like sexy broads in their art. there's gonna be some sort of piratical ship in the background which symbolizes that pirates are cool. More to come...

Not a bad concept.
Good luck

it seems like the ship is departing the character, gives the "left behind" feel to the image... like the journey began but not to your main character..

Well, I don't completely agree with Ranath, It may be that the man is beginning his journey too. Maybe there's someone important for him on that boat. And the man's journey is to be alone. If this is the case you can enhance the storytelling by including other elements. For example the man can be holding n his hand some object that belonged to the person on the boat (like a photo or a medallion...)

Anyway, I like the image as it is, light seems to work fine up to now.
Best of luck.

hey, thanks for the feedback so far...Ranath, you're picking up on the right vibe, but xillion put it in the right context. The figure in the foreground ( eventually a woman or women) is indeed being left behind, but her journey ( as xillion pointed out) is going to be one of another nature. As for Xillion's suggestion of some personal items, yep, i'm working on that stuff now...

Your lighting is beautiful and gives the pic great depth. I wonder where the boat is heading to...

Very beauiful palette and a nice, classical approach you have there. I really like how this piece is looking. Have you considerred maybe trying out the reds not so strong where they overlap the land masses on either side of the picture? After all, the sun looks like it would be behind them...
Anyhow, beautiful work so far. Good luck on the final stretch!

This image fits the contest instructions very well. It is obviously the beginning of the journey.

I agree with Mike on the colors. By and large i would assume that more desaturated colors would help both picture and mood.

O.K., depends on what you want to depict, right now i´m not sure about that: too many mixed messages i guess.
You should give us more hints (in the picture) what the woman´s journey is about, is she sad about being left alone and so on.

Cheers

Hi Jim

Thanks for showing me this link. It's been interesting to to see the step by step approach towards the final result, and how some ideas is kept rigid while others are in flux.

Overrall the ambiance and epic quality is what stands the most out for me. There are some places it would be nice to see more definitions, but it might been done with intention not to stylize away the focus from the what happens in the interaction between the lady and what she values on that ship.

The impression is that it must be happy love since the color scheme is on the warm side of the spectrum.

Some minor details to make sure audience eyeball what you want, is to use the silhouette lines from the reefs on the left adjacent to the eyeline of the woman towards the ship. So lower her a bit and angle the top reef line on the left a bit.

Anyways, I hope some of this makes sense. If not you know where to find me.

Excellent work, and best of luck in the competition.

Hopefully, the story here should be fairly self evident, otherwise the painting itself is a failure. But since a journey can take many forms, I chose to show two at once: the conventional journey, of the people aboard the ship, and the main character's journey, a journey of solitude ,waiting for her loved one to return.
