View Full Version : camera matching for modeling
Scott212 12-14-2002, 11:18 PM ok, I'm pretty stuck here. What I want to do is model against a 2d image like they're doing on the earthquake visual/FX challenge. Do you use an image plane on a camera or project it on to a plane? Please please please help me with a detailed description on how you might go about this in maya. I'm not a new user, but I've just never really tried this. Any light you could shed on this would be awesome. Thanks!

you can attach an image plane to your orthographic cameras and center in in worldspace.
in example, if you want to model a head and have front and profile images, select the cameras you want to use for modeling (front/side), go to camera attribute editor open the environment tab and click on create image plane.
position the image to your liking via placement.
if you want to attach the image plane to the active camera simply go to view->image plane->import image.
man, why don't you look up stuff like this in the manual ?!

sorry, maybe you misunderstood me. Setting up an image plane is not what my question was. I was just wondering what methods some people take in setting up a scene for a visual/FX shot against a 2d plate. Do you they use orthographic views? Do they map the image to a geometry plane, or create an image plane. Does the camera look directly at the image, or does it get turned to try to find the perspective of the image? That kind of stuff. Thanks for you effort.

uppps, seems we just talked at crossed purposes somehow !
well, i'm not an VFX expert, but did you already check out maya live !? (only available if you're using unlimited though)
it's an addon for matchmoving. you get your 3d objects to match 2d plates by defining markers on the original footage that give maya the needed data for tracking the live-action camera movements. then it translates those movements to your virtual camera in the three dimensional workspace.
there are a lot of external matchmovers out there like in example boujou or realViz matchmover, maybe you should get informed about those too ?!
