So I put my name on the dotted line...
I'll be trying harder to finish this challenge than the last.

Well, so I didn't get much of a chance to do any sketching this evening, but I have a few ideas:

1) Gavin's just had his 13th birthday, and as a treat he's been allowed, for the first time in his life, to come with his grandfather to the big city to sell produce from their farm at the market. In the evening, while his grandfather is in the bar, Gavin sneaks out and goes exploring. We see the scene as Gavin's watching a street magician and gets hit on the head from behind and shanghaied aboard a sailing vessel bound for exotic waters.

2) Dina is a priestess who's been indescreet and a bit unfortunate. She's managed to hide her pregnancy under the wide, baggy clothing worn by her order, but now her son has been born and she have to find a solution. She marks the boy fith the symbol of her god and sets him floating in a basket on the river, hoping that somebody downstream will find him and raise him well.

3) Willow lives with her family of wood-elves in a great oak in a peaceful forest. A few days ago some giants arrived with huge machines, and started cutting down all the trees in the forest. All the other elves have been killed or died trying to protect the trees, and now Willow and her pet dwarf-dragon has to set off to find somewhere else to live.

This is the scene of Gavin getting Shanghaied in idea no1 above as I first saw it in my mind. (Is "shanghaied" actually an expression in English? For being kidnapped and put to work on a sailing vessel? It is in Norwegian, and I've sort of assumed it's the same in English.)

I'll be trying a few different versions of this scene, and I'm unsure whether to make it a nighttime scene, or alternatively a rainy afternoon with a sunburst in the background, symbolising the possibilities of the journey ahead...

Another rough concept-sketch. An old suitcase as it enters the enormous labyrinth of conveyor belts at an airport. I think this is a kind of fun idea, but maybe too impersonal? A character instead of the suitcase might work though...

May be - the character inside suitcase?
Good idea! Anyway, the concept with sailing vessel is a little bit more likely for me...

Hey Kjell,

I like the idea with the suitcase. You could make a very old one, which has come around the world a lot, full with stickers from different countries. The suitcase alone can tell you a great story...
Maybe the suitcase self is a creature, like the Cars in Pixars, well, Cars

Thanks for the input guys, it's very valuable to me:)
The being kidnapped aboard a sailing ship is still the most apealing to me. The ideas that make the suitcase one sort of work are still kinda not working for me. (For example the character in the suitcase just seems too Toy Story 2-ish.)

I'll still do a bit more sketching before settling 100% on one idea.

A quick background/atmosphere test rendered in Vue. It will be tweaked and reworked, but this is starting to have the atmosphere I want. In the end I'll propably render out a panoramic hdr image to use to generate a lighting rig and a backdrop.

A cannon for sticking aboard the ship in the background. It's a bit over-modeled for that purpose, but I'm going to use it in another project too, that's why.
