Hi, everyone and good luck to all.
I know I'll learn a lot in this challenge.
The general idea I have is a car accident in a remote area, and the beginning of a long and difficult journey that the survivors will have to make to return to civilization.
I will submit the first draft this weekend.

I know that this accident will involve a 4 wheel drive vehicle, so I started modelling it even before I decided on a concept sketch. It has to be a 4 wheel drive in order that the accident in a remote place makes sense.

I haven't quite decided a on composition yet. However, I am making progress on the vehicle.

And here is the exterior of the vehicle I have in mind. I will add detail when I decide on a composition. I won't work on headlights and front detail yet because the front of the car will probably be crashed and destroyed.

And finally I started working in the interior of the vehicle last night. I am experimenting with textures. I will model the driving wheel and then decide what else to do depending on the final position of the car.

There is a car accident during a family camping trip. It happens in the middle of nowhere. The car falls a long way crashing on tree after tree. Luckily, a treetrunk stops the fall, impaling the vehicle. Only the two children survive. They have a difficult journey before them, first climbing up the cliff where they are now, and then going back to civilization.

nice work so far, good detail, and a big scene!
one thing i noticed is that the streetlights are to dence, delete one light i think
x - x - x - x - etc .. :)
the dash is the ones to keep lol :p
fer3d
03-20-2006, 04:36 PM
Thanks for pointing this out!
And there will be less poligons too!
One of my personal challenges here is to use as few polligons as possible modelling a scene as large as possible.
se7enthcin
03-20-2006, 04:49 PM
Actually, You could probably get rid of every other streetlight. This way you could extend it where they just "end" off in the distance. Also, if you are using the same object over and over again. I hope you are using instancing. :D
fer3d
03-21-2006, 12:41 PM
Hi, se7enthcin!
I actually got rid of every other light. I am using instancing, and have divided the lights in groups according to detail needed due to distance. Only the first 4 lights will have textures of their own. Al other will be clones.

about the lights... with a perspective like this the lights don't have to have the same distance from each other... have more space between the foreground lights and less space between the background lights progressively, it is an optical illusion trick that works well for still images in particular.
fer3d
03-27-2006, 12:45 PM

This is the fairly detailed car. I need to make several fixes, but this is the look I have in mind. Only the front of the car has been detailed, as it is the only part that will be seen.
I know it looks too clean and shiny, but I wanted to draw a strong contrast with the street child.

i am askin u this cause render is very nice...If u keep this style for the whole scene it will be awesome...
And please tell me where did u get the HDRI?
fer3d
03-27-2006, 04:13 PM
simovici: Thank you! Actually it is a very simple texture and the hdri reflexion is doing most of the job. I could give you the color/reflexion/difussion percentages used if you would like, but again, it is a very simple reflective material.
stavrevstefan: I am modelling and rendering in Cimena 4d. Thank you for your kind words, but I am beginning to feel scared at the amount of work I have gotten into (the city, I mean). The HDRI is one of the free samples I downloaded some time ago from a site Allprobes of something like that. May be easy to reach through google.

I've been modelling the rest of the child during the weekend and started texturing.
I need to work on the hair some more and add some anysotropic reflections in order that it looks more natural. I also need to start with a specularity map for the face.
Clothes are not final. These are not exactly drawing the poor-rich contrast I am looking for. I'll be adding some displacement maps to the clothes also, to simulate some more folds and creases.

I am just experimenting with some variations to the "street child" theme.
This would be just a portion of the image. Large buildings on top of this elements, other street children escaping from (???) (running after or climbing dangerously to the rear of a luxury tourist bus) adding some irony to the scene and some motion and action to the composition. There would be not one, but a few journeys.
Above all, childhood is always a "journey beginning", and not really a good one in this case.
The floor will be changed. I will add a more colorful and adequate grafity to the walls.
This weekend, I'll try a "nighttime" lightning scheme and see which works out better.
There is the beginning of some symbolic detail. Street children also have dreams, are exposed to drugs and all kinds of violence. They have to steal to live. They hurt, they are afraid, and have to live "on the run".
Next posts will show some additional detail on this alements.
Critics are wellcome.

nice modelling.very nice .
BUT:
try and play a little longer with the skin on the boy thats disassambling the mercedes , because he has a kind of rubber hand..
try and add some dirt on the car shader because its kind of perfect and nothin looks like that in reality. try to add a fallout map in the reflect slot if its max..
and i dont know why , but the whole picture looks a little overexposed..
sorry 4 the critique...
good luck onwards

Makaron: I will post a "nighttime" version of the scene shortly. Well, in fact a "just befere dawn" version. I personally like it better.
Elmasfeo (a very original and funny nick): Thanks. I will try to make the connection with the topic more clear by adding other elements. For now I am just experimenting and having fun.
The dirty paw: How dare you criticize me? :argh:
Only joking... :D
On the contrary, thank you for pointing out some problems I was overlooking.
I will see what I can do to improve the skin.
I added some more dirt to the car, but after rendering it, I believe I need still some more. It is looking too clean indeed.
As for the overexposure: I am dimming the lights. However I wouldn't like to get ride of the overexposure alltogether. I noticed that all photos have some overexposed little parts here and there (as well as some underexposed elements). May be trying to get the lighting too perfect would be similar to making the Mercedes texture too perfect? Wouldn't it also look kind of unrealistic?

I think you should have the main character and his accomplace just walking away into the distance with some stolen cash in their hand and the broken into car in the foreground!... Then it would symbolise a journey... Right now it is just symbolising an action...

Almost everybody is still sleeping. Somebody had to work overnight. A few forgetful employees left the lights of their offices on. But the city sleeps.

Even at Global Bank there is silence. Maybe an early cleaning lady doing her work. Or an accountant whose numbers don't match. Other than that, silence and darkness on the building.

Lobo, gracias. Es el plug de ropa de cinema 4d. Resulta fácil hacer que la ropa se acomode y siga a tus modelos pero tiene que estar la malla muy subdividida.

Hey Fernando, great work! REALLY love this concept/theme. Looking forward to seeing more and that you have time to finish! Enjoy reading the captions to your entries, such as "No fancy offices or luxury toys. But still a whole personal story with fears, dissapointments, may be even talent and hope. And the will to survive another day in the big city." Not very common among visual artists to also have a flare and talent for writing.
Good luck!

Ocenabluesky: Thank you for the encouragement. I am sure there are many mistakes in the captions, since English is more like a "third language" to me. However, I am glad that the ideas came through. I hope you are right about me comming up with interesting text, because my next project is a 3d comic book where I will be writting the story as well as doing the illustrations. Not in English, though...

After considering a couple of options, I decided to follow Mason Robert's advise in this thread. He suggested to show the escape, rather that the actual "crime" in order that it simbolizes a journey, and not an action.
So, I placed kid number 2 first (since he is going to be farther away)and improved the "jump" to make it more interesting. I am very doubtful about adding motion blur to him. It would look more realistic, but I don't know...
Kid number 1 will be placed at the lower right, running away from the approaching police car (we can only see the red and blue lights on the scene) into the fog. I would like to take some time to pose him well.
Hopefully, the evidence of the "crime" will be obvious enough for everyone to figure out what is going on.
I am considering adding a third character, but I'll decide later.
Some more detail will be added this weekend, such as more trash in the street and the reflection of the green building on the car.

Kid number 2 at 50% of the real resolution. And I really, really don't know if I should add some motion blur to make the jump more realistic. Much detail would be lost...

I got rid of the 3rd character, who wasn't contributing much to the image IMO. I also changed the position of the "flying" skateboarder to convey the "running away" idea better, and to make more sense of the initial composition idea. I finally decided to give him some motion blur.
I also increased the lights a little.
I think that's almost it...

Hola, Victor!

The next couple of posts show some detail at final size (When you enlarge the image). I fixed the lights. Apparently my monitor descalibrated and I was inadvertedly overexposing the image.
This should look better now.

Abandoned street children live and die today all over the world. Rejected by their societies, unable to attend school or go home to a loving family, they often have to steal to live. They are always afraid, hungry, in danger, and on the run.
They know about injustice and indifference. They can see so much wealth in the world, yet they have nothing.
Many will never make it. Death squads, drugs, alcohol, AIDS, or hopelessness, will kill them sooner or later.
However, they might still have hope, the will to live, and perhaps even talent and potential.
Perhaps there is no journey more difficult, dangerous, and heroic, than that of an abandoned young child beginning his day in a big city.
Everything was modeled and rendered using an older version of Cinema 4d.
I tried to capture the moment when an approaching police car surprises them redhanded. The time is just before dawn, and the streets are empty.
I also attempt to underline the contrast between the tall buildings of a wealthy modern city anywhere in the world, and some of the outcasts that inhabit it.
Many thanks to the sponsors of this challenge, CGSociety for the professional organization, and the artists who dropped by and gave me valuable advice and encouragement.
