I have notice when watching video. When the artist is modeling with geometry, he has a thicker blue line around the edges so that he can see the open edge better. Is there a certain preference that I need to make my edge thick.

If I understand your question correctly then try this:

Display > Custom Polygon Display - Option Box

Check the box for Highlight - Border Edges

Set the Edge Width (slider right below Highlight)
