Boyaa! I've just started on some character sketches for my entry. This is just me fooling around after some doodles in my sketchbook, i think i got the feeling i wanted of the panda and the orangutango (how do one spell that?). But they'll all evolve further in my progress i think.
You can also see some really quick thumbnails, i dont think they are any good and just plain "normal". But it gets me started and spawns new ideas. I'll leave it there, until next time - when I'm planning do do some real thumbnails of the composition and scene.
Comments and critics are always appreciated, even if it's early in the progress. :)
Great characters but I've no feeling yet for your journey. The thumbnails don't convey enough. Keep going.

Not sure quite where you're going with this yet, or more specifically where the characters are going! - but they sure are great character sketches! Nice work, looking forward to seeing more!

Yes, sorry'bout that ;) I got it all in my head hehe.. guess you'll just have to wait until i do some color blocking or lineart of the final composition.

Nice characters atle. Good luck!
So I've finally getting where i want with my concept, ill try upload a early WIP today. But what bothers me is the strict guidelines of this challenge - though I've browsed through most of the entries, and very few are following the guidelines. Are all artists rebellions? doing the opposite of what you'r being told to do? :)
Well anyway, my concept isn't following the guidelines either.. I might consider changing it so it would. But then again it would ruin alot of the feeling of it.
Guidelines and Tips
http://features.cgsociety.org/images/spacer.gif
The key theme of this challenge is to portray the emotions of a character, or characters, about to embark on some kind of journey. It is recommended that entrants focus on physically small characters (bugs, Hobbits, Elves, Children, Faeries, birds, animals, micro robots - whatever) in a foreground setting against a vast backdrop of epic proportions (by comparison).
Technical Guide
http://features.cgsociety.org/images/spacer.gif
In this Challenge entrants are encouraged to depict small subjects against a vast backdrop. This requires good composition and good command of depth cues. Here are some notes on the two fundamental depth cues: atmospheric haze and depth of field.
http://features.cgsociety.org/challenge/entries/12/10356/10356_1141823529_medium.jpg (http://features.cgsociety.org/challenge/entries/12/10356/10356_1141823529_large.jpg)
Didn't really turn out at all like I wanted it to.. I think I need to go back and do more thumbnails. First the idea was to have a close up of the characters coming out from beneath the waterfall, aswell as showing the epic landscape in the reflection of the waterfall. But that turned out to be almost impossible to paint.
Anyway, I've just sketched in the 2 other characters in this group of 4 on their journey. Behind the panda and the girl - is the orangotangu and a boy. And as you can see the chimp has a umbrella up when they'r passing the waterfall making all the water hit the boy sitting next to him.
I gatta go do some work now, ill try out some thumbnails later.
This is great. I love the waterfall and the bits of light floating around the scene.

I like the sketch :) it already has a bit of a jungle feeling in it. I think in color it would even look better. Maybe to get that epic landscape you can have some openings in the trees in the bg with an epic background visible through it.
Agreeing with Yoitisi. It has an excellent jungle feel, but the trees and undergrowth makes it a bit too narrow to set the mood of an epic journey. But I really do like it, and look forward to see how it will develop :)

Interesting picture. I'm not sure, but it looks more like "The Journey In Progress" for now. Falling light somehow helps, but I think U should set even more contrast, maybe by adding some tree branches to the left.
http://features.cgsociety.org/challenge/entries/12/10356/10356_1141858339_medium.jpg (http://features.cgsociety.org/challenge/entries/12/10356/10356_1141858339_large.jpg)
So I'm just playing around tonight, always wanted to do a underwater scene sometime. However this idea is very simple I think, and probally not anything i'll go with in the end.
Hm.. back to the group of 4 I think, or perhaps some other concepts of some other ideas I got. Time will tell.
I also agree btw, that my old concept is more like "in the middle of the journey", and I have to keep that in mind so I wont do the same thing again later.
Thanks for the feedback guys, it's really helpful and motivating!

I like your last sketch, although it's indeed a bit simple and hasn't got any visible characters in it. It has a bit of a Jules Verne feel to it :)

Very nice sketches man. I like both of the ideas, but i preffer the previous sketch where they are in the jungle or forest. I think you can definately play with the lightings with that and set a great mood. Plus the viewers can clearly see the characters and be able to relate to it.
The last sketch is really cool as well. It has a great composition and good size relationship, but it lacks the overall sense of being at the beginning of a journey. It would be a nice illustration piece to finish though :argh:
be back for more bro
cheers

Hey great stuff, i agree with arc, i prefer the jungle scene, to me the underwater scene seems like the end of the journey for them. But i also find the jungle concept more interesting visually. kepp it up, Good luck!

Great start Atle!
I like idea with the girl, panda and orangutang( thats how you spell it ;) )
Just try to draw more conpects sketches with them in different settings. I think it will turn out great.
I realy like the composition on the fish drawing=)

03-11-2006, 09:58 AM
i really like the fishy :)
very naughty fishy :)
heheh
nice comp on that one too :)
yoitisi: thanks! I agree about the character part, it's just not there. who is jules verne?
FrozZT: nah, I really had to much work in the spectacular challenge - doing some graphics for a strategy computer game. But I'll promise to finish this one!
Nigio: I might agree that my 2nd concept has a stronger composition, but i'll keep developing my first idea I think. We'll see what I'll come up with. :)
Drakula: I don't think i'll flip some colors on this concept, as it's only a quick sketch I had to get out of my head. But I'll start on coloring on my next concept, working in greyscale can be a fast way to develop concepts, but I think I got some good ideas now - so next one I'll promise you a color concept!
Arc80, LhongJohn, Comlock: Thanks! hehe, I'll keep developing that concept, though i'm going for a different setting I think. Will post something as soon as I have slapped some colors on my new thumbnail.
Cyberone: Thanks! I have plans to "fish-up" something "fishy" in my next concept too. ;)
http://features.cgsociety.org/challenge/entries/12/10356/10356_1142190592_medium.jpg (http://features.cgsociety.org/challenge/entries/12/10356/10356_1142190592_large.jpg)
Old idea, new concept sketch. Since it wasn't possible to reflect the "epic landscape" in a waterfall, i went back to my old thumbnail. The classic clishè one, a mirror whom leades you into another magical world. In my case a thick jungle themed forest.
I'm planning to show the "epic" landscape in the mirror, showing what the characters see infront of them.
I will probally try out some colors tomorrow, I'm hoping on some input meanwhile.. What do you think?
http://features.cgsociety.org/challenge/entries/12/10356/10356_1142270095_medium.jpg (http://features.cgsociety.org/challenge/entries/12/10356/10356_1142270095_large.jpg)
So I've moved the mirror back some, and made the characters abit smaller.. think it helps to show the enviroment. I noticed when I was painting the monkey that I need to do more character development first on him and the girl before I'll paint them. As for the panda, I'm pretty happy with his look right now.
Future plans is to fix the lightning on the enviroment displayed in the mirror, as it is a mirror, I assume that everything will be flipped horizontal. And thus the light as it is now, is incorrent. The challenge will be to reflect the back of the characters correctly in the mirror. I'll also make some kind of magic dust field around the edges connecting the mirror to the ruins.
And I plan to put some foreground brances later on, to add abit more horizontal objects to the composition.
Comments and critics please ;)
Cool concept..
panda is looking good..
where is he going, k, he has a bagpack, but the great Journey isn't in the pic yet?
Keep it up! ;)

03-13-2006, 05:44 PM
yoitisi: thanks! I agree about the character part, it's just not there. who is jules verne?
hehe who he is i'm suddenly not sure anymore, either he was the author of some adventure books or the main character. Beginning of the 20st century or something, travel to the center of the earth and stuff.
I like the last piece better than the initial sketch, but theres something wrong with the panda I think. His front paw shoulnd't be so far beneath the edge of the hill which hides the rest of his legs I think.
Like the ape though :)
This is coming along nicely! I'm glad you kept the same characters.
As for Jules Verne...click me (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jules_Verne).

beautiful style and design you have going on here -- the expressions on the animals are very well done, and the perspective of the stone arch towering above is perfect. really like the look you've incorporated here -- looking forward to seeing the main character when she's inked in, too...

Ohh this is wonderful! Lovely lighting and colours! Great work
MichaelMotion: I agree with you, and I've gone into a complety other direction with this now. And I love the new changes I've done to emphasize that actually the "journey begins". Will post a new version tomorrow ;)
yoitisi: thanks man! I've changed the legs of the panda in my next version, aswell as removed the chimp. I really can do alot better I think, the chimp looks to young. And I'm gonna try a more older chimp (orangutan) after some character sketches.
JTD: Ah, so jules verne is a famous science-fiction writer.. I'm glad you like my characters!
jevinart: Thanks! as I've said before I'm redoing the entire arch area, aswell as the two characters (monkey and girl) - hopefully it will look better. I just didn't feel the composition was strong enough as it was.
enialadam: Thanks! I'll try to keep some of that lightning in my next WIP too.
So alot of changes been done tonight, I'll finish em up tomorrow and post it then. What I can say is that I've dropped the "mirror" idea, and instead gone with a "portal" idea (thanks to a friend Maja, who pointed that out!). I won't tell much more, you'll have to wait and see the next version tomorrow. :)
http://features.cgsociety.org/challenge/entries/12/10356/10356_1142337502_medium.jpg (http://features.cgsociety.org/challenge/entries/12/10356/10356_1142337502_large.jpg)
So I promised a new update on my WIP - and here it is. I'm emphasizing that the journey actually BEGINS here. As my idea has changed to that the girl travels with the panda and orangutan out from her closet inside her room. I'm gonna work the next hours to block the girl in, aswell as the monkey. I'm planning to have the girl in her pyjamas, with a paperhat on her head and a wooden sword pointing forward.
Oh, and I've redrawn the panda as you can see - hopefully his body works better now. Not very cartoonish yet, but that will come when I'll put in some details and exaggerate some more.
I'm not sure yet if I'm gonna move this all back abit and widen the canvas so I can show more of the forest (as said in the guidelines you have to show an epic landscape). Though i'm usually not good on following rules. We'll see what happens. ;)

Puh, I need a break now.. and see it again later with fresh eyes. Still doing sketches of the monkey, not sure yet how he'll turn out.
wow! much better!
This will be fun to watch develope..
Keep going!

wow, this is looking great So fa AM.
I'll try to give some crits:
Maby you could have made the bedrom bigger?
So you could get a more magic\epic feeling to the whole picture instead of "going out the WC-house" kinda feeling to it? :surprised Everything feels kinda "small" somehow.
I like the way the light from the landscape shines trough the door, and on the wall inside the bedrom.
Maby have the girl and the pandas eyes to look forward at the big mysterious landscape infront of them. But I like that they both look at eachother also...
well, that should do it for now.
Good luck with your picture!
:wavey:
woah nice! I really dig the colors..the red, blue & green fit together nicely
The composition is also very good now .. very balanced & good space around the characters... hehe it will be hard to bring the monkey in there. Ill be back soon :P

hey mate, very beautyful concept, a panda and an ape, really cool idea...:D!
i'm very curious, how you'll go on with it...
but i have to confess, that i love your concept with the jungle-lake (or river?) and the waterfalls in the background very much... omho it has the more attracting composition.
keep up your good work

Great work here Atle! I love your style, but the other concept sketch was far more good. It would not be any problem for you twisting it around so it would get a more "the journey" feeling!
But whatever picture you decide, you got my thumbs up!! Looking forward to se your picture evolve!
Thanks all, after taking a look at my new concept and comparing it with my old one - I agree that it has a better composition. I'm now working on some new ideas, I will post some sketches soon.
http://features.cgsociety.org/challenge/entries/12/10356/10356_1142603097_medium.jpg (http://features.cgsociety.org/challenge/entries/12/10356/10356_1142603097_large.jpg)
Here's just some sketches I've been playing around with.. I've got a new idea I wanna try. Will post a concept sketch as soon as I'm done - working at it right now. Oh, and I've got the design of the monkey more like I want it now. Atleast that's some progress hehe..
http://features.cgsociety.org/challenge/entries/12/10356/10356_1142635481_medium.jpg (http://features.cgsociety.org/challenge/entries/12/10356/10356_1142635481_large.jpg)
I'm kinda stuck at the moment, and I just had to finish this sketch I started doing. I need to go back and do some thumbnails I think, I want a concept that's original and that I'm happy with before I'll really get into it. :)
Otherwise this works nicely as color testing. I might add more details and actually finish this one, as I think it has a strong composition.
Oh, and for thoose who don't get how this is related to "the journey begins". We'll I agree, it's not that strong message - that's why I'll do something new again. But the idea was that as she's fishing, this panda creature comes up behind her. She pulls back her fishingpole, and it gets stuck in his ear or nose or something - she tries to throw/pull it. And then the journey begins! I imagine the panda running off into the woods into a magical and hidden part, with the girl still hanging on behind him. And so the story continues..

Man, a lot of updates i've missed. I really like the size relationship between the panda and the little girl with your last post.
Well, no critzs really since you already said that you're going to redo things. I'll just sit here and wait :D
be back again bro. hope everything is well over there.
http://features.cgsociety.org/challenge/entries/12/10356/10356_1144696441_medium.jpg (http://features.cgsociety.org/challenge/entries/12/10356/10356_1144696441_large.jpg)
Sigh, I really need to get a scanner.. but im still posting theese crappy photos, just to let you know how my thumbnails spawn new ideas. And hopefully lead me to my final concept. - Mr. Rundbubba and his floating circus.
The idea is that he has mechanical "ships" formed as giant whale/squid carrying his circus. He's riding his circus together with his newest "self employed" young girl.
Now I just need to figure out a composition for showing that the journey begins, I'm thinking either to have them set off from a city, and the girl has snuck onboard the circus ship without rundbubba knowing. I'd also like to define more characters, like the all cliche ones - like wolfman, beardwoman, strongman, etc.
I'm going away on my cottage for a week now, and im bringing my laptop - expect some lineart to be ready when I get back home.
http://features.cgsociety.org/challenge/entries/12/10356/10356_1144707272_medium.jpg (http://features.cgsociety.org/challenge/entries/12/10356/10356_1144707272_large.jpg)
So I'm just playing around here.. didn't get to finish in the foreground people (wolfman, and beardwoman etc.) carrying the supplies onboard. But you get the idea.. I'm just playing around with the idea of a wide canvas here. Not much else to say about it, gonna have to improve my composition in the next ones.
http://features.cgsociety.org/challenge/entries/12/10356/10356_1144758427_medium.jpg (http://features.cgsociety.org/challenge/entries/12/10356/10356_1144758427_large.jpg)
So I've been told from pretty most everyone that my first concept had the most appealing "journey" and best composition. So I'd guess I've gotten abit offtrack in the process.
I'm trying to go back now to that one, was planning to having the girl and panda walk across the tree trunk (bridge).
Still not entirely sure about this though, I'm going away now for eastern holidays - Perhaps with a fresh look at it in my cottage I'll decide to go for it, or scrap it and make a new one ;)
What do you guys think?

Hi,
your last sketch looks very promising. I like the "deep dark forest" mood and the light rays breaking through... could be something very atmospheric at the end... great work... keep it up
very nice mood on the last one. As far as concepts go. I think i still like the first concept best, but Panda/girl walking across trunk, would work well also.
Crap, I've finally found a concept I'm satisfied with... but.. I've only recently started doing lineart after my thumbnails, and I only got 20 days left!
I'll post my lineart as soon as I'ts finished.. however I'm not sure if I'll make it in time for the deadline of the challenge. I'd be working long nights everyday if I'd would.. Well, time will tell.
http://features.cgsociety.org/challenge/entries/12/10356/10356_1147609017_medium.jpg (http://features.cgsociety.org/challenge/entries/12/10356/10356_1147609017_large.jpg)
My friend said that I should challenge myself and try to do something different (I usually do cartoonish stuff). And that's what I'm doing. I'm just posting my progress here to get some quick feedback what you think, I haven't started putting in characters yet - but I have an idea how it should look like from my thumbnails. (I really need to get a scanner).
Don't like sketching much in photoshop in lines, so im blocking in the shapes - and I'll start lay color ontop of it after I'm done. However, im not sure I'll make the deadline.. It's only 13 days left now!
Now there is a man with balls of steel! 13 days left and we get a new concept.:)
Sorry I didn’t see your tread before Atle! I like all your concepts.
The waterfall scene is the best one in my opinion though!
Good luck to you finishing this!!

Now this just looks like it's going to be cool and fun when you're done with it. Great progress so far. Keep it up.

Hm.. started doing some base color test stuff. Still not satisfied yet, I wanted it kinda darker and more mystical.
I just added some characters so you'll understand my idea. I'ts basically the regulary "Expedition crew discovers lost city" story, and then I'll add some scary characters watching them from the treetops perhaps.
10 days left! I'll try to make it in time, if I only weren't that busy at work.
Try: thanks, hehe .. I've heared alot liked my first concept. I might have to finish it then ;)
Antics: yeah, I hope I'll make it more interesting as it develops. Time will show.

sweet idea though =] really indiana jones type of feeling

So I'm getting there.. added more jungle, and removed the water - and kept my original idea with the old passage bridge.
Still not sure what do to with the top yet, I think I will make some artifacts above them, and light that shines through aswell as some treetops.
adonihs: Heh, yes I noticed! Thanks, you'r picture really rocks. :)

thanks bro, ya this is really turning out great man, not saying bc i had water in mine haha but the ground really adds to it..i dont know if you live in Ca (i didnt check), but if you ever been on the Indiana Jones Ride..this just screams it, and with that said...youve really inspired me. Not only are your foilage so..hardcore and straight on. youre really talented =] i hope this one gets finished in time, bc its sure to be a def. winner.
great job man.
ONE critique though..just one. the ground level seems a little slanted, and not straight with the temple, maybe its just me..but thats all, keep it up =)

Hello Atle,
Hehe, i know i havent been here for awhile. I guess you've been doing more work for your entry than i do.
Anywho, nice piece, but i do prefer the one with the water version instead of the stone floor. Why? because i think you can play a lot with reflected lights and bouncing lights. The reflection effects will also be a good eye candy.
Other than that, nice natural colours and great design so far. It definately reminds me of indiana jones.
be back again mate
Tigrenka, calisto: Thanks alot! I'ts always motivating to receive some good feedback.
adonihs: Thank you for thoose kind words, I really hope I can finish it in time - like I imagine it could turn out! :D I live in Norway, so I've not been on the Indy ride yet. But I really have to some day, who isn't a huge fan of Indiana Jones? :)
When I first started doing thumbnails for this enviroment, I had a thief lurking in the shadows of the left statue - with a knife shining in the light. Ready to jump two guards patrolling the path beneath him. But I think I'd get lost in all the earth-like colors, so I changed it to a expedition crew discovers lost city idea, which I hope works better.
As for the ground, I also notice that it looks kinda slanted when you mention it. I'll have to make my perspective lines visible again, and check what could be causing the effect.
Arc80: Yeah, I discovered you went into a new concept aswell this late - keep it up! I'm sure that we can finish in time if we work hard. :)
As for the water.. that was what I was thinking aswell, but I discovered that bringing water in - would make the scene brighter - and less "mystical" than what I was going for. Especially since I'm planning to darken it abit more, and add some torches to the characters making room for a 2nd (3rd) lightsource. Oh, and I could exxagerate some and do the stones on the ground with some kind of mirror-surface texture and get the same bonus with the reflections perhaps?
Keep the critiques coming! I always love to get some advice when I'm painting. I'll try to work on the characters with some torches in my next version, I'll keep you updated.
Looking good Atle!
Really like the face with the crying eyes!
The slanting floor looks good I think it gives a more dramatic and interesting view of the scene.
You could passably skew the stairs a little more because they look a little to straight compared with the floor!
Looking forward to seeing some characters in there now!:)

Looking good Atle=)
I kinda like the version with the water. The whole inviroments just seemed more open and epic when you added the water I think. But you said you wanted it to be more darker...
How about just making the water more muddy and dark?
oh well, you decide =) I realy hope you're able to finish this one
Ok Atle my friend!
It is time to finch this journey now! Putt on a huge pot of coffee. Lock the door, rip out the phone cord!
Turn on Prodigy “fire starter” really loud. And let it all out!
A couple of “all nigther`s” with coffee feed intravenously will do the trick!!
Looking forward to your final image!:)

Thanks guys for pushing me! I had almost given up, cause work is killing me.. I've got way to many projects going on.
Don't think I'll make this in time, anyway here's I got off a couple hours to work on it today. I'm still not sure about the story, but I'm thinking of groups of some people sacrificing this girl to whatever is inside the halls of the crying skeleton ruins. To get me going I just blocked in some characters, still wanna cut off the right part some more and perhaps show some more of the left part.
I'll see how much time I'll be able to get to work on this tomorrow, depends on how hectic things are at work.
Atleast I'm really looking forward to the end of july, when I'm traveling to Denmark to start study for Animation and drawing. :) I'll be back with lots of time for next challenge!
Still, feel free to comment on this. I'll try to do as much as I can this weekend, the deadline is on sunday or?
Com on Atle you can do this!!:)
A few good inspired hours of hard work and voila!
One wonderful and mysterious virgin sacrifice!
If you do a Craig Mullins kind of thing this is doable.
Just concentrate on the lighting and getting the main structures right,
Wouldn’t it feel good to finish this thing!!:)
Go fore it, the best art is born under pressure!
