my first sketch... the idea obout this is simple... when we get born, we begin a journey... called life. And it isn't always preaty... This baby is just begining her journey... and it looks scarry infront!

really cool idea -- like it a lot. i, personally, think you could push the idea further outside the box. would really like to see some deeper metaphors drawn into this piece -- a stairway with jagged edges is quite cool, but i think there could be a more powerful representation, with an even more dynamic finished product. honestly am not being condescending here. i think you're onto a very wonderful journey! life is a universally powerful force that transcends all physical boundaries and dimensions.... would like to see a non-literal interpretation of the beginning of this journey. only being this direct because i think you've got a winning concept in evolution here -- there is so much drama and suspense that could be represented.

i've actually been thinking of this exact same concept lately -- although not for this challenge. since you put it on paper (or digital paper, as it the case), it's yours. some of the concepts i've been pondering are -- do we choose the life and body we inhabit at the beginning of life's adventure? would we choose an abusive or painful life, if it helps us to complete a spiritual evolution we need to finish in order to move on? or, do we have a choice in the "otherworld" on how we come back -- and if so -- would we pick the most appealing and beneficial life to enter into? i think about children that grow up in horrendous conditions-- say even starvation in the third world or physical/phsycological abuse in america or europe -- how did these people get there? is it kharma? is it a willing journey to accomplish a purpose? what about coming back as an animal -- to be loved and cared for, or left chained to a fence to die in misery (as was the case of a neighbor's dog we tried to rescue to no avail....)? or, what about celebrity lives -- money, glamour, the spotlight, and great sex? damn -- how come i didn't choose that life when it was my turn -- why isn't that me?

i'm not a new-age wack-o. just really fascinated by this mystery. i actualy love this concept, and am sincerely curious as to how each of us got to where we are at this very moment in time..... take it for what it's worth -- i would like to see a more powerful vision here, as life is the most mysterious force in the universe (...if anyone could pull this idea off, i think you're the one!)....

@ Jevinart: Thank you for burying yourself into this concept... I'm glad you like it... You shure gave me a lot to think about... and I guess you're right! If i chose this idea, I need to give it a deeper meaning! Some other ideas came to me lately, so now i dont know wichone to choose... I'll post some sketches! Thanks!

Realy sweet character, man!
Just one suggestion... It isn't good to paint on a grey background unless you know the background (enviornment) is gonna be gray, which I think doesn't happen often. You should color the whole scene roughly first, coz color of the scene always influences colours on the character. By my experience it's also harder to make up with a decent background if you don't paint character and enviornment around it together.

Nice work

thanks Klemen... I'm actualy not painting on a gray background... that's just for you guys

I have a roughly sketched color theme for the background... and I hope I'll stick with it, becouse I'm never quite satisfied with that... I wanna make it spectacular, dramatic, but nice, cartoony too... I was never quite good at that!

Thanks for the comment :D

I guess from the change in feeling and character you're not going with the deeper more intense journey that Kevin was referring to . . . interesting that you chose 2 possibilities that are at opposite extremes . . .or are they? I'm actually working on an animation called 'Soul Journey' that is a lot like your first thought but it goes through the paces and ends in the same flavor as you second!

Can't wait to see this mature.

Hi Scott...

I like my first idea... but i think it's too "dark" for me at this moment! I would really like to draw something more colorfull, cartooney... optimistic, happy... and I think this last concept is just the right one :D I love vivid colors, colorfull sceenes... so this is probably the idea I'll try to finish!
Maybe I'll finish the initial concept someday...

oooo how cute! ;)

I hope you wont lose this sweetish filing on environment.

Maybe something on the character: I think that the horns dont fill into the character, but this is only my stupid complication (like always).

I realy want to see this finished, because i think that you realy do your best in sweetish illustrations. ;)

cheers

Hello Gregor,
Your contrast between blue and orange is good. But your background is may be too much satured and 'eat' your character. Your value are a bit contrasted too ( dark brown for tree almost darker than the shadows on your character ). But without looking at all of this little adjustement : nice color choice. Keep clean & good job

Looking good so far. I'd only suggest that in your final composition move the main character slightly towards the right border of the picture (to 2/3rd or 3/5th of the image width). That will move it from the central area of the picture and thus much more improve the composition, as the character will presumably be the main area of interest.

@ DeeVad: I know about the colors... they are too saturated indeed! I'm working on the color theme... and i think blue-ish looks cool... I just need to adjuste it now :wise: thanks

@ Lovas: the composition is not final... I will add more creatures in this picture so I will have to make more room for them too... im thinking of changing the concept a bit too, so a lot will change... but there needs to be more space infront of the character... that's true! Thank you :)
