But i guess, you you'll do it. I bet you will be one of the winners in this contest!

Basic thumb to check out the palette

Not quite sure what's happening yet compositionally or thematically, but if what you're testing is the palette, consider this a very successful test. It's beautiful! :)

Oh great, Dura, so much for being the unknown underdog, free of high expectations like yours *sighs* And iīm sorry to hear that the Market-pic wasnīt good enough for you ;)
I will try to do better this time to satisfy even your spoiled taste hawhaw
Although iīm afraid is not what you expected and you will be disappointed.

Thank you, DoInferno. Same to you. Love your mole :)

This is the basic thumbail, but i have to admit itīs more to stake the claim of my idea than anything else. I already see it in my mind, so the hardest thing will be to cram it in this little frame somehow. I wanna go for something little different: the idea is that i will show a population of elfs livng in the rainforest for ages, who are driven out of their tree by big sawing maschines, cutting off everything which comes in their way, donīt caring what they destroy.
Ok, not really the heroic, positiv winnerconcept full of adventure, so to speak, but i already finished a Journeypiece for expose 4 (what a coincidence, some ideas fly around) and iīm interested in the contrast of a nice , beautiful setting and the terror of those maschines leading to nothing but horror and pain.
I want to put the emphasis on the emotions of the characters, some are crying, some helping each others, some carrying stuff, some staring back in disbelieve being a refugee from one second to another. All they could do is grab whatever they got their hands on and run for their lives. A journey in an uncertain future begins...

So this is the way i work, when i already imagined the scene. All that i can see of it right now are colors and composition and in order to fix this liquid image i started with a little thumbnail. And i really mean little, because even on my screen itīs about 4 to 6 centimeters. My expierience is that if the colors and composition are right the rest will follow almost automatically , answering most of the questions you have to deal with when getting into details. For me,a good picture is never about details, itīs about the first impression when you look at it.
But of course there will be loads of details flying around in this baby. Yup, iīm going for the biiig picture here. Just hoping that i didnīt bite off more than i can chew..

I will stick with doing thumbs until i get an idea of a good composition. Thx for dropping in.

Hi W!L, glad to hear that you recovered enough to clown me. :D
Ferngully? You mean this cheesy version they came up with based on MY idea? Those movie people always push it into a happy ending. Phh. Idiots.
So this is gonna be more like "Ferngully: the untold thruth" or maybe "Ferngully: what you never wanted to know". Hm, something like that.
This is gonna be the reality. Iīm talking about Love, Hate, Struggle and...
Boredom.

MFTitus:Thanks and hello. Hey, whoīs hiding?
Will definitely mark your thread.

Duracel
03-05-2006, 07:36 PM
Hopefully not as much of boredom. ;)

Well, its true, some less hard rock but a bit more of a symphony i hoped for, but this is just me, just my personal favor and my own picture will feed this hunger, hehe. So good to see another approach and i guess i will like it too! And im especially interested how you get those different expressions without looking like a bad B-Movie.

So, this is my first critic, for such an dramatic and tragic scene this thumbnails still looks too cartoony - and perhaps thats not what you wanne go for.
And perhaps the more or less symmetrical composition isnt the right to show the end of this formaly strong nation falling into chaos. Perhaps you try to show this "change" also in the main composition. You remember your overpaint to roadkills dog? Something like that, where you really feel the power; it have to hurt!
In this thumb you can still believe the tree is gonna make it.

Those are my thoughts, perhaps it can help ... but anyway, more than in this tree i believe into your skills and im pretty sure you would have make it working even without any guesses or advises.
In the end i will go one step back and just say "wow", i guess. ;)

Second thumb: making my mind up about the composition. By an large the colors were already what i was looking for.

artvandeley
03-06-2006, 01:28 PM
No no Duracel, your advice is more than welcome (this goes for everybody too, of course). I decided to go for something completely different on purpose, so am insecure enough about the outcome.
Youīre absolutley right about the composition, the first scetch didnīt show at all what i was aiming for. Maybe this one will reveal more of my suggestion.
Right now i really donīt know how to avoid this B-Picture-Problem. I hope that it just doesnīt show up. It should be more like a fairytale land facing reality.

Looking good so far :) What will the shredding machines look like? the Goblin Shredders from Warcraft spring to my mind, would like to see what you will come up with.

Very much appreciated.

slickgreekgeo,jpedro,Selina42,Ranath: thanks :)

paperclip, youīre right about that lightsource. Plus it would give me a strong diagonal.

DoInferno, there wasnīt much to understand in Version 1. Except that apparently i hadnīt the faintest idea how to put all that into a picture.

ahbeejieh, right, bothered me as well.
Along with only 100 spots in there iīll have to look after. Unfortunately i have some very tough deadlines until next monday, so i will not be able to upload any new images until then, sorry.

artvandeley
03-11-2006, 03:54 PM
Since i still have to work (on the weekend..sucks) i wanted at least upload a little proposal for another attempt. As you all can see i specifically wasnīt satisfied about the size of the characters in the picture which wouldīve make it even harder to show their expressions , and there was definitely too much unimportant an unused space in it.
I changed the palette a little bit adding som red and other spots.
And i decided to introduce some kind of leader to the group giving the picture both more focus and much more of a journey. I mean, hey, heīs got a walking-staff, hasnīt he?

So this isnīt this lame furngully anymore itīs...o.k.... itīs Battlestar Galactica.
Oh great. Even worse.
Seriously, maybe Moses might come into your mind. If so...itīs fine with me :D

If you guys think it would be worth a try going for this change, the next step would be to check the composition in lineart, and then go for the characters.

Yeshil, hi :wavey: ,quite a surprise, thanks

Hi, Torsten, looking good! I think I prefer the horizontal composition slightly more because the width helped the left->right motion of the piece... plus (especially) I was impressed by the sheer spectacle of so many people making a mass exodus. Of course it's a ton more work to paint all those people, especially if you're working on weekends too. (I can empathize: I am too!) Of course, the portrait composition does really emphasize the more personal journey of the main character. Though his staff, placement, size, and colors already set him apart? Wonder how it would look if her were in the head of the horizontal procession, on the right side? Anyhow, just thoughts that don't really affect anything one way or another, it's still coming out really well whichever you choose, and I'm looking forward to seeing your progress. (And thanks for the very kind words in my thread! :) )

well, i like this latest sketch a lot.
if you're aiming on a jungle-ish scene, you should stik with those colors and buildup, don't lose the free space at the right.

Well, I really like this new combined composition, but that shouldn't be all that surprising! :)

The only thing I miss from the earlier comps is seeing more of the fliage and the canopy of the big tree... though with the current camera angle, don't see too much way around that (unless you want to be like me and be soooo craaaazy with your perspective angles! :) )

Anyhow, looking good Torsten, can't wait to see more.

Hi, art! The concept is evolving quite nicely I would say. The colors look very good and even in this early stage the piece is conveying so much atmosphere.
What I'm wondering about is, if the initial idea of the machines destroying the fairie's tree will still work out with the poses that are suggested in the concept. Perhaps it's just the small resolution but what I see is a rather orderly crowd which does not seem to be in much of a haste. The leader appears calm and heroic to me it all just does not look like as if they were fleeing. It looks more like a traditional exodus which everybody knowed would come in time. Well, perhaps it would be better to show that the tree perhaps is dying of age or whatever and that this is the "circle of life" which calls for a jouney to be started somewhere else. On the other hand, perhaps you are able to build up a scary, fleeing form a dangerous force type atmosphere but then I would suggest to work with darker colors in the far background to enhance the danger felling.
However, I'm really looking forward to the evolvement of this painting. It's very interesting and inspiring!

Thank you for the useful input , Daniel. Chinasky mentioned the same to me by private mail so i think both of you have a good point here.
I didnīt realize myself how far away from the original idea i am right now, but on the other hand i know now that i altered the concept for a good reason: By working on the crowd i tried to show a variety of emotions and i found it rather hard to express this by showing people who are more or less in panic. Which of course IS a big emotion, but every emotion will be alike.
So i changed my concept like this: They already knew they would come. One morning some worker painted a white X on the tree and they heared about what this means. First their troops tried to fight the enemy but then they had to admit defeat and decided to leave their homes.
The advantage of this concept lies in the variety of feelings within the group.
Everything in this picture should be beautiful as can be to give a contrast to those suffering elves. First of all the viewer should think" Hey, what a nice painting" but then he should realize that there is something deadly wrong with this picture. There will be a bleeding soldier, dead elves, a crying mother..something like that.
And for the leader: He wonīt be heroic and all. I think especially he will be quite interesting to develop. The responsability he bears, his hope, and that he is not at all beyond doubt about his faith.

Anyway, i think/hope it will be all be clearer by FINALLY SEEING A LARGER IMAGE...(for crying out loud...)

Walrus, youīre right about not seeing much way around that treeproblem: Me neither.
Crazyness, huh? hehe, that was a good one.

Everyone else: Thank you for the kind and helpful support. Didnīt expect that at all. :)

Still canīt decide which way to go for the composition but until i know i worked on the group in the foreground, trying to get kinda good rythm in it.

i think its a bit too solid now, the foreground and the background actually figth for attention, a problem i actually have in my piece too. the midground actually is a bit too solid maybe, miles davis once said, groove are the pauses between the notes could also be used on paintings. my sugestion is to give the piece a bit more space to breath. maybe a bit more sky, some volumetric effects to separate far distand midground and foreground objects, show maybe more sky? keep up the great work, those elements already rendered look awesome

Man, now you are kicking in the next gear!

The recent renditions make a hell of an impression on me. The Characters come to life, the space stretches and the composition starts to fuel power into the whole piece. And the light!

Ok, now it's war! ;) ;) ;)

Hey, do you often use preliminary greyscale rendering for your images? Or did you just want better controle over values this time? I just was wondering, because your market scene seemed to be painted "on the fly" in color.

Hey Art,

the pic is coming along nicely, it looks great!

Forgive me if this is a dumb question, but the white diamond shaped lines on the second picture...it seems like you are using them to help create the composition. would you mind explaining your thought process on this and how you decided to use those certain shapes for this pic. I'm intregued on how you do this. If thats not what you are doing, then could you explain what thos signify.

Awsome pic man I love the color concepts and the current one with all the people are looking beutiful. Good luck and I can't wait to see how this peice turns out.

WOW, cool grid.

it's the DiVinci perfect composition.
but honestly, you made that up, right?

seriously though, very cool composition. but i think the characters are stuggling a bit against the bg. that might resolve itself a bit when you get into color, but in the current render it's all a bit of a wall.

good luck, man!

PS - just found the 5th page of comments and 1st angel already said it better than me. but i agree.

Once again thank all of you for dropping by. :)

ahbeejieeh: hehe, you noticed the iconic composition. Was ist that obvious?Because actually i indented it to be an insider.
Apparently not inside enough.
But seriously , it wonīt work if iīd decided to go for it without putting in some decent variations. This structure is too solid for my taste but i will still use it as a general guideline.

Chief, Thanks. I keep watching your thread as well.

1st Angel, youīre taking the words right out of my mouth, this is waayy too solid now and in this state lacks focus. The thing is: i normally donīt work with greyscale but since this is a contest where we litterally all are on a journey, i thought i give this approach a try and find out pros and cons about it. Maybe that why the pic looks undecided, norrow and crowded. It will be clearer when i put some color on it, because that iīm feeling comfortable with. I would really like to hear your oppinion then.

Oh, this goes for anzibion as well of course. Thank you buddy. And yes, i made that all up, in fact iīm already done and trying to get some interesting background in a rather shallow pic. Damn, her goes my devilish plan. :D

Daniel, like i said, this is the first time for me working with greyscale. Hey, weīre here to learn not to show off, arenīt we?
As for the declaration of war ;) No need to call to arms, this is just my lame attempt to catch up with you, partner.

Nigio, thanks for letting me know.

Josh, thank you for commending me. And thatīs not a dump question at all. Itīs not the first time i use those guiding lines, mostly when i have to cram in many details somehow. For me itīs just the thing to do when iīm dealing with many directions and spots in a picture in order to keep track of all those elements without loosing focus ( which apparently didnīt work out very well this time, but iīm working on it...). I find it nearly impossible to achieve that without an elaborated composition. The way i do this is that i first push around all the main elements on the canvas and then decide which structure might be visible here. Then iīm trying to give this structure a system somehow.I think itīs important to feel everything in the picture has its place. Since iīm having a hard time explaining this in english you might as well look up Daniels ( Digitaldecoy) thread, because heīs better in that. In every respect.

Here is an example which i did 2 month ago. Started as a speedie, it ended up being a Not-at-all-a-speedie-any-more-Pal after 4 and a half hours working on it. But it took some time to make up my mind which lines i have to follow, which utensils to add and so forth.
http://www.torstenwolber.de/katalog/merlin8op.jpg

Looks like that i have, apart from doing taxes (yikes),some spare time this weekend to spend on the next step. I must say that íīm very eager to get some colors in there.

hey ive been following your pic for a while...

i wanted say something but it really has nothing to do with your actual picture...lol
and im a little drunk...hehe...but since composition is a theme in your thread i think ill post it here..

for a start i really think thinking about composition in temrs of lines is highlyt over rated...we all have heard about it over the years...hell ive been studing painting (oil) all my life...and i really think most theorists have it wrong...but hey is me against the whole art word right??
well if you actually think about it no...lol...what!!

well...think about where you learnt the golden mean...think about who told you geometric shapes are important in a painting....who??
who told them??
and who told them??

the main reason i quit painting as a full time personal art profession was because people would alwas make up stuff about my painting that wasnt true...but if you want to sell art you have to talk the talk///and walk the walk....

the amount of times ive heard the phrase about my work "nice composition" is amazing...an really in my whole life i have never thought about it, is amazing...people will see what they want to see...hehe that is our nature...

so my advice to people who said "i cant paint" is always...you can!! just do whatever!

dont worry about composition so much...its usually a heap of people talking about stuff they have no clue about...just paint!!
:)

anyway...im drunk and ramble...
hehe

anyway as i said before i love your work...
and always the composition is fine...

:)

Wonderful composition! Beautiful Characters and scene......Top 10 to me......

artvandeley
03-27-2006, 10:31 AM
Idgree, too nice of you. The Question is: Top 10 of what ? *hawhaw*

Cyberone; thanks, i hope you didnīt suffer from a serious hangover yesterday :)
It might surprise you , but i agree with what you said ( or at least what i think you ment by that ) This talkthetalkwalkthewalk-thing is the reason why i never considered myself as a "real artist", i was always more than happy being an illustrator who doesnīt have to make up cheesy stories about his art.
As for the compositionlines and so on: Maybe you got me wrong here, but i didnīt want to show off or tell people they HAVE to do this. Most of the times iīm not doing this either, especially when there are just 3 or 4 main elements in the picture. But in pictures like this i think itīs a good way to achieve a solid foundation, where you can build your imagination on.
Thatīs all, nothing to make a big deal about. Hope i made myself understood this time.
Thanks for the useful input and good luck with yours.

Hey Torsten!

you make great progress in your painting. You pretty much nailed the lower half of the painting I would say. Great characters, beautiful color and lighting.
I'm not quite sure about the upper half though. Seems a little bit like you are waiting for the right idea. I'm sure that idea will come to you and when it arrives it will weld the two halfs together with a bolt of lightning. :)

Say, did you just overpaint the monochrome version in color mode or did you already start to add color in normal mode. I often experience that colored greyscales look somewhat bloodless but yours look very light and lifely. Any tricks of the trade to share?

well, i myself long for some distraction in that people-shape..
maybe a lil kid breaking out to the right, maybe some dropped fruits and a bending person to the left.. those people just seem to be very on rails right now
and i liked that horizontal canvas thing more, with that little wave in compositionblah

but who am i ... just advance your piece, i'm sure it'll turn out great

Chinasky

Du Sau!
"First attempt" - I like this kind of understatement.
Allright, it's great already - like I didn't expect anything else, if You hold the pen.

But right now, the composition isn't really overwhelming. There's a hole in the middle of the page, the "main" figures seem to be ducked in the lower third part. It looks like a book cover concept, with enough space for the title and the author's name in the middle... Be an artist, not an illustrator! ;)

To be honest, yet the last step with the composition lines wasn't convincing for me: too tidy, too beautiful. Where is the chaos in the situation? The dirt?

Hi Torsten,
This looks very nice. Colors, composition and everything are great!
One thing that struck me though... I got the feeling that this group of people is ending their journey and not starting it. maby because of the old guy in the front has that pose as if he have come to an halt.
Great pic anyway, good luck!

Wow, Torsten. I love the colour palette! Almost can breath the fresh forest air. But it also makes me wonder why they want to leave such a nice place! It will help if you add to the picture the cause of their exodus.

You mentioned that you are going to come up with a new sketch. So I will wait for that one!
All the best, dude!

EDIT: Just noticed that you have already put in the cause of the exodus: the construction claw. I didnt catch that at first! My bad.

Hi artvandeley!

Wow, that's a really neat piece. I like the way the light falls onto the characters in the foreground, and the slight blooming effect it creates is a very nice touch. The man in the front looks very interesting and mysterious because of the hood and the dim light illuminating his face. He stands out from the crowd too I guess because of his dominant color amongst the cooler colored characters and backdrop.

Really nice! vbmenu_register("postmenu_3297852", true);

This is looking fantastic, Torsten! I don't want to jinx you by saying I expect you to be a winner, because I have a knack for being totally wrong in my guesses, but if I were a judge, you'd be on the top.

The only thing I'd like to note is that with each successive post, your colors seem to get less and less saturated. I mean, compare this latest with the color comp from post #28. Not that it's a problem, they're both valid choices. As a personal preference, I like the more saturated colors. (But you've seen my work, this should come as no surprise! :) ) But my first thought when seeing your latest thumbnail was, "Hey, where's all the reds in the bottom go?" (A few posts earlier, it was "Where'd all the blues in the sky go?")
Anyhow, don't mind me, it's still a gorgeous piece, and my top paragraph still holds...

Take care and good luck with whatever final touches you have left!

Hi Mike, thanks for your constructive criticism. Itīs always something special to hear from you.
As for the colors: Yeah , i know. Like i said the post before iīm having troubles to communicate the right colors and levels since my profiles donīt work on the CG-Server. On the first images i just had to push stauration by 10 points, but in this state itīs not that easy and most of the time iīm too lazy/busy to care about.
The easiest workaround should be to post inline with embedded sRGB, so the next images will be not officially added to my submissions.
Except the final image of course....doh..
This should show what iīm working on right now. And, hey: i reintroduced a little bit of blue too. :)

Well, it's always nice to have something vaguely useful to add instead of "That just looks beautiful!"

but for now...
That just looks beautiful! :)

Man, this is a killer piece! I realley like it.

Here's a few suggestions. To me the best part of your image at this point are the characters.. i think they're perfect the way they are imo. What i could see needing a little change are the foreground elements and the tree roots leading to the cut. I'll explain a little.

On the left edge of your picture you have the side of a rock/wood bark sticking out and cutting the light. Well when i was following the line of it down to the leaves my eye got stuck because I always thought it was further then the bushes. Reason why is i think the way the lighting is done on those ricks gives the impression it's way far.. but when you look at the plants they seems alot closer to me. I'd just suggest to make the plants overlap the rock and not the opposite.

On the right side, I just think the plants/leaves are reaching out a little too much. Even if I think you placed them that way to accentuate the point of interest, it's too close from the characters. (that's just my tiny little opinion here hehe)

And then the last thing I could see improving are the big tree roots.. honestly they seem too flat. As in they don't have any depth. I would add some values/highlights on the tips of the roots coming out at us and leave the trunk a little darker.. in any case make it blend in and give a nice illusion of depth. Right now without the huge ammount of details it would look plain dark and plat. And as much as you want to leave it out dark to bring out the characters, it's not worth losing the depth of your image I think. Like i said just a little more light green "moss" perhaps growing there and slowly fading into the darker end of the trunk.

But this is just some suggestions, other may argue with them. I told you already, I think this is a really nice piece of work as it is.

looks good men so far, but i noticed something in the image file size. how come you can upload
a 2.28mb such that big file size? when i upload my image here, the posting required say'z "IMAGE FILE" should be Image (150kb limit)? i think its unfair to us small artists here.huhuhu we cant post such a huge file images:shrug:

This is one excellent image.
Great story, emotion and mood and very well executed.

hey,

this could use a bit more detail to it, i realy think that the whole journey idea is very basic, you dont leave the viewer something to imagine the leader of the tribe leading them in the forest. i think it was used so many times, you might consider adding a twist or something to spice things up..
now i dont realy see where is that light emitting from.. its as if they have their own small light source, but i guess that can be a judgemeant call.

i actually realy like this piece, so no offence on the crit, it might be a tinsy bit harsh. cheers.

cool idea, nice characters, colors and technique are really good, only thing which looks strange is that dark stone/root on the left side, but that's just my personal feeling.

Really cool image. one of my fav's for this contest. Doesn't seem like there's much to do now. If I could point at something, maybe it's that the highlight on the center characters seem a bit too "burnt"? But that's the only thing that comes to mind.

Good luck in the voting

Ove and Daniel: Thanks, was kinda unsure about that. Helped a lot :)

kevin: Thanks.

Squibbit: Hehe, what a surprise.Been enjoying your thread quite a lot btw.

mant-Raz: Hm, i guess what you mean is supposed to be a bug with ants on it.
Apparently not as well painted as you said :D

Nick,Marlon,Victor: Thanks a bunch, appreciate it.

Nards: Really donīt know what you mean. I uploaded a 150 kb-File like everybody else does. Maybe īcause iīm working on a mac?

Andreas, thatīs fantastic you like it. Thank you!

warpy, although iīm not your opinion in most the things you pointed out, your comment really helped me to look at it from a different angle. Thanks. Really, i mean it!

Alexandre, wow, what a useful advice. As you can ( hopefully) see, i kept some of your suggestions in mind. Mercy beaucoup!

So, this is how the image looks right now. Posted inline, to show the accurate colors. I must say iīm quite surprised (and flattered) to have that amount of views on my thread. Thanks again everyone for dropping by.

The Prophecy told them about their machines and the wind carried the story about their coming. It was time to leave.
Time to find the place their magician have told them about.

SideAche, Oracle,Tyranx, thanks a lot!

Thanks Victor. I know this sounds lame, but even if i donīt win anything, the main thing for me in this piece was to finish it. For several reasons.

mant-Raz: Oh, i see. Hadnīt the heart to erase it. Well, at least itīs a forest..lots of stuff in your way and so on.

Steven: *blush* again

Michael, thanks for dropping by. Yes , i know i feel guilty myself not having visited all the great other threads enough. Yours for example.

Paperclip, thanks.

Since the colors are again altered by the CG-Server *sigh*, hereīs an inline-version again along with a small detail clip. Iīl be off this weekend, so i wonīt response, sry.
All the best for you guys as well, was a pleasure joining this contest with all of you.
Thanks for everything.

Congratulations Torsten! Sure it would make your mom proud (and that she is enjoying your win now too!!)!

It was funny, as a 3D entrant I only visited the 2D threads every month or so and vaguely followed your entry from afar. Then toward the very end you blasted your characters with that marvelous beautiful sunlight and I happened upon your piece and just thought, "Wow!! He really pulled this off!!" Your image just leaped from the screen! Can't wait to read your WIP tutorial and see more of your work in the future. Cheers! (Best wishes for your continued fond memories of your mom too!)
