This is my first attempt at a concept.

The concept is a woman setting out on a journey away from a deep dark place to a happy birghter place - kind of a metaphor for letting things go and moving on. In the darker place I want figures staring at her with a longing, like they don't want for her to leave. I'm hoping to drive multiple takes on who she is, and who they are to her - so that each observer has his/her own take on the piece, and can make their own story to go with it.

I worked really small on this one to stop myself from adding too much detail, and getting carried away - so it's still extremely rough. Please C&C as much as you can!

2nd Concept - tell which you like better, or if I should combine them both, or if I should go in another direction entirely!!

It's an interesting challenge to show that new destination with her so close to the edge of the frame. Lighting alone looks to be putting in the contrast between her and the longing figures.

I prefer the second one, the colour of the forested area is already interesting and the head of the figure above the treeline is a nice bit of seperation. My $.02 ;)

the idea is very good, i like the second , it goes well with ur storyline, the first one has gloomy bg again, the second one seems interesting already... but over all a good start.

nice color palette . Good luck

Very interesting concepts. In terms of composition, I think your newest one works best, but the colors layed out work better in the first (that doesn't really matter, as it's still very early obviously). Just my two cents, great work so far.

Playing around with the character for a bit - going for a fantasy setting, sort of a Frank Frazetta meets N. America native culture meets...

Thanks for the comments! I've got a few ideas about the composition - I'll return to that in a bit. I'm thinking going somewhere between the 2, and then go from there...

Colour test for character.

nice sketch and in the color test , the hair overlapping the chin, is a bit awkward... i know it is a color test though , great going...
