Position: Supervising Modeler
Department: Lucasfilm Animation (U.S.)
Job Purpose:
Designs, creates, and provides leadership needed to achieve the desired CG model assets. Builds and executes complex CG models including supervising the work of other modelers.
Primary Responsibilities:
With an emphasis on proportion, form, detail, and functionality, creates 3D models and oversees the creations of three dimensional objects to be painted, animated and used in a production.
Creates and maintains animation control systems (i.e. facial shapes).
Manages virtual modeling pipeline by reviewing work from Singapore office, and advising on necessary changes ensuring consistency of models.
Responsible for directing the modeling crew and guiding the overall model production.
Supervises the technical setup, insuring the quality of the model will meet the requirements of the production.
Working under the Lead TD and Supervising Director to determine the "look" for an animate or inanimate object.
Supervises the modeling crew to deliver the expected CG models.
Creates and maintains animation control systems (i.e. facial shapes).
Renders images of the models created for approval/circulation.
Assists in hiring and provides the crew with direct supervision and leadership.
Using a variety of software packages, creates models of significant complexity; steps in as needed to assist Modelers and troubleshoots as needed.
Responsible for reviewing the work of each Modeler after project completion.
Provides mentoring and training as needed.
Reports problems with software/hardware.
Participates in production-related meetings offering thoughts and ideas.
Liaises with other department heads on modeling concerns, when necessary.
Experience:
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Graphics, Industrial Design, Fine Arts, or equivalent having gained a strong sense of anatomy, character design, surface development, proportion, and mechanical functionality. Traditional model building a plus.
8+ years of experience creating complex 3D organic and inorganic objects for Film or TV required.
Experience in UV Layout, Texture projections, 2D texture painting in UV space required.
Proven track record of successfully working in a supervisory capacity on several productions.
Expert knowledge of a variety of modeling software packages. Sketching, drawing, painting and design skills desirable.
Must have an extremely creative and critical eye for guiding the quality of the model.
Must be a skilled decision maker, problem solver and an exceptional communicator.
Proven leadership abilities a must.
Bidding and scheduling experience required.
Technical expertise is a plus.
Thrives in a high pressure, deadline-oriented environment.
