This is just a simple concept sketch of my idea. A scientist, a little girl and a teddy bear find themselves on a journey through the human mind...

Started modeling the base of the scene.

The concept is interresting, this the most powerfull i've seen in this challenge (except some:))
i'll follow this.

Concept is nice...
But I'm not sure if the scientist is really useful for it. Just the little girl and teddy would give a more 'fantastic' feeling, instead of 'school journey'.
Imho, it would be a very difficult to understand picture. Do you already have idea about style you will use ?
Indeed, I'm impateint to discover more about your idea ! Good luck !

Interresting Youpi, i didn't see the scientist as a teacher, but a guide, a father, or a wizard and his disciple. In that case the scientist is in the right place, i think.
David. :)
Thanks for the encouraging comments! :)
DaVee & Youpi: In my concept the scientist's role is more like what DaVee has suggested... a helping hand on this journey of discovery for the girl. Of course I'll have to make that clearer somehow in my final composition...
I'm kinda swamped with assignments at the moment so I'll probably only update again on the weekend.

Hey Michael, hope you have found time to work on this and that we will see more -- very interested to see where you go with this concept! Good luck once again!

In the tiny chunk of time I've squeezed away from University I've extended the model of the environment slightly. Most of the rest of the detail will have to come from bumpmapping to save my poor pc. I'm going to move on to modelling the characters now.

The modeling looks fantastic! Although its going to be hard to walk on those dendrites (or is it axons). Looks like a tight rope walk!

Hey Michael, cool, great to see you found time to continue with this exciting concept. Really like where you are going. May want to experiment with translucence, subsurface shading, and incandescence ramps (actually just ramp nodes on an incadecence setting to pop a fake rim light onto objects)...have found these approaches useful when working on neurons in the past. Look forward very much to seeing what you come up with -- and learning from your own shading network. Good luck! Glad to see you are still in the game....

Whoa I thought this was maya at first! I didn't know you were a blenderhead too. What renderer are you planning on using? Its good to prepare now before you texture and shade objects. Its a royal pain later on to switch. Renderes that you may want to consider are Indigo, Sunflow, Yafray and the CVS builds render update. Apparenlty SSS can be faked with the trasmissive feature. This is in the 4/19 CVS build and I haven't experimented with it yet.

The other renderers require the 2.41 build for XML export. Yafray I guess is the easier to understand since its really nicely integrated. The other 2 seem to be external programs.

This is a model of the girl and the teddy bear.
Haven't had any time at all to work on this lately. I'm still going to try and complete the challenge though, had to change the concept slightly to make it possible.

The girl and teddy bear textured and lit.

The arms are a bit short and are not quite beliveable. Your character lacks a palm to which would really enhance the hand. Also the bear looks like he had rods in him and is glued to her shoulder. He probably would have a bit of slouch to him. Or be sitting on her shoulder.

Haven't had any time at all to work on this so it is a bit of a last-minute rush job unfortunately...not exactly what I originally had in mind.

A little girl finds herself inside her own mind.
She finds its complexity fascinating yet she is frightened of what she might find in its labyrinthine depths. She stands at the threshold, in two minds.(so to speak)
