View Full Version : Vertices
Antilles 03-04-2002, 09:36 AM Hello, I am a beginner with Max, so if this question is a bit obvious to you guys, thats the reason....
How do i select any number of vertices and line them up perfectly on a certain axis? Can I line them up according to my perspective view also? Thanks in advance.

Go to Helper objects and create a grid. You need to activate this grid so it doesn't use the home (viewport) grid. Position the grid where you want it and then grid align (Should be on the default quad). You can align to a vieport by scrolling down the align button on the main toolbar till you get to the viewport align button. This then presents you with options for axes (etc) of alignment. :)

sweet thanks, thats been a source of frustration for a while now...
FYI - You can also just non-uniform scale a selection of verts, turning %snap on limits mouse runs. I often use this lazy approach to square selections to user views in screen co-ordinate space.
Also check out reset xform, and object pivots for some more basic mechanics. For example, if you scale an object WITHOUT first entering sub-obj mode, it will report an incorrect properties volume, resetting the xform (utill panel) will 'correct' this and square up the object to world space again.
Some beginners scale splines at the object level, then have problems with lofts and such do to this same obj level VS sub-object level issue. What max 'thinks' you are doing in that case is translating for animation, even if no key is generated.
Hope you get some of what I'm pointing out and move smoothly into whatever creations you have in mind.
