THE CONCEPT
I usually think in keywords. This image rappresents basically the first journey avery living thing experiences, life. A very simple concept.
All my inspiration and ideas come often from my personal interests in philosophy, visual communication, iconography, egyptian mythology, and theology. This is a mix of things, that doesn't want to rappresent an existing interpretation, but wants to be a new way of seeing things, my way of recalling concepts and mixing them together.
I'll try to make it simple, hehhehee :D
First of all the Gate, door, let's call it door.
This one is dual, has two panels, the left one "Birth" and the right one "Death". The closed door is the void and absence, the beginning, the dark and comfortable sensation of the known (other concepts in that as usual). When the door starts to open, life begins, the journey begins. A completely opened door is death, but also ascension, light that leads to another state of darkness, so the same situation of waiting that brings again to birth. Let's call it reincarnation. This concept is rappresented by a "symbol", the dog or snake that bites his tail. (still has to decide)
I'll prefer the snake, cause in Egypt KA was the primeve snake who brings life, also a small ego hint (ghghgh)
Also the two panels are themselves birth and death, because they manipulate constantly life, and the journey, by their balance in opening at the same time, or not.
Every panel has another symbology, more simple, that recalls humanlike deities and all the features they recall in human life. Every deity has the "Symbol", which is green in birth, and azure in death.
The colour scheme is inspired by traditional ritual colours used in egyptian painting.

The character is starting his journey, by conscience, that will end in the same place.
There's not a beginning without an end, that leads to another beginning.

Also, I was thinking of living characters in the shadow of the gates, as the old man here under, that will be on the right side, still thinking about the left side character.
That's not all, but for now it will have to be.
I really hope to finish this image, and find the necessary time ;)

I deleted the image of this post, updated, sorry, I can be quite stupid sometimes :D

I had this idea yesterday, before I got asleep, some thought about how my style would suite an image of this kind.
Thinking about the light, the characters.

Hello there! I was just looking at the concepts and a question come to my mind. What kind of brush did you use to paint the dark colours in the background (of the top left-right female figure) ? I'm asking because it has some "marker-like" flavour to it. And I've been trying to recreate it.

Other than that...Keep it up, let's hope a bad day does not hinder too much your talent!!!
ciao, Enrico.

Ciao Ana,

Very interresting. might be too tired to understand the full concept, the journey itself lasts as long as the door opens, then the fully opn door means dead... erm i am confused. tried to understand it different, there are two doors, one for birth on for dead. so ths temple is the otherworld between the period of lif and where the souls return after life?
... even thougth i didnt get it completly yet, the design of the cathelm is really great and also the initial sketch of the boy and the old man on the doorway are awesome.
keep up the great work, best of luck, have fun and a great journey :)

xric7 Thanks mister! I seems I'm stuck on this one, every time I lay the pencil for the death panel study I start something else, heheheh ;)

Xillion Thanks a lot Enrico! I'll try to go with this, I really want to finish the idea.
The line is all pencil on paper, scanned and multiplied on a raugh paper, of which I have a collection. It's true, original, technical pencil on HB quality graphite. The shading brushes are painter Classic watercolour (which I adore how it works, and I adore Painter Classic brushes). In this case I worked a lot on the wet canvas, but often I dry it and make other layers on it. I don't work with layers. For small detail strokes I use small loaded oils, with low opacity and small size. I don't know if it can help, since I use Painter Classic :D

Nigio Thanks a lot Nigio!

TheFirstAngel Thanks a lot! I'll try to go on! I'll find some time to write more decently the concept, because it's quite complex in a way, if you write like me, hehehe ;)
Let's say the movement and opening of the door is the journey, closed door is our birth, darkness in our mother's lair, and open door is death, the open door brings all the light, the light is conscience and forgiveness that leads to blindness and dark, and again and again the same process which is reincarnation (the symbol of the snake that bites its tail)
The panles are somekind of switches, that add more symbolism, they're also death and birth and they move the balance of the opening of the door.
I'll have to find someone who can help me with englih for that :D

Cyberone Thanks! I'm on the Death panel study right now, when I finish it I hope to go on with the final outline. It will take forever! hehheehh

anzibon Thanks! That's the most important thing, having fun, I really enjoy this challenge. again thanks a lot!

warpy Thank you so much! I think I'll try to do it with or without the challenge ;)
adonihs Thanks mister! Sometimes I get so much involved with the design of the elements, the sketching that I turn on too long to get on the finished piece ;)
I'm so glad you like her, I must admit that is also my favourite part :)

Well, at the end, I didn't found enaugh time, I switched to part time job this week, but it's too late. I hate to rush. I'll finish the piece even without the challenge, but I'm so sorry i didn't made it.
But, who knows ;)
