Ok I really need to change my name to meet with the other one I use on polycount, cgchat, threedy, and just about any other 3d forum. Anyways I guess though my name is Pyroman941 on this forum everyone on all the other forums know me as Jec1183.

This is just some little hero character I sketched up while I was bored one day. I sketched up a Villain to go with him but I start and stop so many projects it seems nothing ever gets done so I am going to try and stick this one out till the end.

I just finished the character with his weapon which isn't shown and he comes in a little under 2200 tris. So now I have to unwrap, get the smoothing groups right, and texture. Then I will rig and possible place in unreal 2k4. I am trying to decide if I should go for a WOW type texturing or more for The Incredibles type texturing.

Real Nice tho you could save some polys in the face unless you planned on having him using his mouth or express his eyebrows.

are you gonna use smoothing groups?

Yes I am going to be using smoothing groups. I worked on the character last night. Finished most of the modeling which was just adding and deleting verts to get the shape I wanted. Certain things weren't smoothing well because of the way quads were placed. I got most of the smoothing working right for this character and I unwrapped the whole thing. I just need to place the uvws the way I want and then I will post how the character looks with the final smoothing groups and the uvw map. Then its off to texturing. I also did a quick rig to see how he deforms and I have no issues there so I will create the full rig after I have him textured.

Here is an update. Got the smoothing groups worked out and the character unwrapped. Tomorrow I think I will rig him and start on the texture. Trying to think of some colors to use and what style of texturing I want to do. I am thinking of WOW style, Incredibles Style, comic book style, or more of a realistic harsh stlye. If you have an idea on texture style just throw it out there for me.

Someone over at polycount suggested that I turn him into a young hellboy and release an SDK. So after I get done rigging him I will spend a little time and turn him into hellboy for a SDK release. If anyone is interested in a possible SDK just say so and I will put the link to the download here.

Here is an updated image of the poly flow. I exported the unwrap but I didn't place it in the jpg so I may post that up later. This image also shows this character as HellBoy lol. I had to with that suggestion from polycount. He is already unwrapped in both forms, I will be putting a link up to download the sdk in the polycount forums either in the main thread for this character or in the sdk thread.

It seems everyone is starting up on hellboy.

Should I texture the hellboy version or my normal version first?

Texture styles?
WOW
Comic style
Incredibles style
As realistic as possible
ETC.

If I do continue with the hellboy version do you want to see accessories such as his weapon?

Also when I finish both characters up I may start in on the rest of the crew from Hellboy in the same style.

Yep, i've got an almost complete hellboy mesh that i'll post once I get back from holiday. :)

I think a comic / WoW texture would look quite nice on the hellboy model. One thing I do think needs attention, is the smoothing groups. There are some very harsh edges on the shorts. Seeing as they're cloth, the shadows should blend smoothly across the material. In fact there are quite a few other areas that have similar problems, back of the arms, hands, chest, etc.

I actually did all the smoothing groups purposely like that for the style.

Here is my Hellboy SDK

Marine from polycount had suggested to turn the low poly hero character into hellboy and release an SDK so here it is.

Have fun.
If you have any questions hopefully the readme can answer them all. If you still have questions just use the email address in the readme.

I am working on the rig for the Low Poly Hero character so I will post him posed in a little while.
