View Full Version : SCRIPT: neon
plastic 12-14-2002, 03:22 PM neon is a scripted material plugin that converts any object to a lightsource.
it works with the radiosity engine built into max 5. it also works with VIZ4, but in some compatibility mode. (VIZ4 has a problem with scripted materials). details are in the readme.txt file.

i think it's a great timesaver, because you don't have to mess around with the advanced lighting override material and submaterials anymore to archieve the effect of object lights.
get it here: http://plugins.marclorenz.com
hope you like it

Man, those plugins are great! Haven't tried yet but how do you make a gradient NEON material? You know, from one colour to another?

I'm relatively new to Max5, so how about you give a quick example on how to set up a quick test scene with the according render settings?

:p I still haven't tried many possibilities yet but I ain't used to all of Max 5's lighting settings yet. Brazil is all I need but this plug looks interesting... Anyone mind posting a quick scene setup?

thanks for all comments.
i uploaded a simple max5 scene with a neon-gradient:
neon_demoscene_max5.zip (http://www.angstraum.at/plugins/neon/neon_demoscene_max5.zip)
all you have to do is hitting render...a general knowledge of the max5 radiosity doesn't hurt though...

Yeah, I know :D But I just couldn't figure out what I was doing wrong. I mean, I did the tutorial in F1 anyways... thanks all the same!

How does this compare to the Advanced Material Override material that ships with R5 and allows you to do the same feature (using a self-illuminated material as a light source in a radiousity solution)?

i think thats waht it does. except its a nicel ittle script with a material interface, etc. all settings in one plae instead of 2, 3, or 4
Great script, and I'll be writing a tutorial about it and comparing it to just basic Max features without the plug. Give me a week and I'll post the link!

HR, F1 and the Manual are your friends! Also, I recommend you take ALL the tutorials that come with MAX, you'll be up and running in no time. Help > Tutorials. Start with the non-new features ones first.
Did I meantion you can learn the whole program with F1?
Carl
There are really no good tutorials for Noob's on Radiosity, even as an advanced user of Max, I found the Help section to be severly lacking in documentation. Hense sure HR, I'll do a tutorial shortly, as I just got the Ok from the Plg's author (thanks!)

I'm talking about learning MAX in general, HR. Of course it doesnt talk about Neon there.... The best thing is to learn basic MAX and then take a look at the new features in 5, as they all have relationship with R4.x functions ;)

HellRender, did you check out the neon example scene file posted before?
here is the link:
neon_demoscene_max5.zip (http://www.angstraum.at/plugins/neon/neon_demoscene_max5.zip)
before using radiosity you have to learn/understand a few basic things.
search for "radiosity" in the help.
and, if you have it, read the "guide to new stuff" paper manual that comes with max5. it is the best intro to GI and radiosity i know.

well, it doesn't emit shadows but there is no need for it.
there are no shadows in real life, there is just absence of light.
that said...yes, neon objects work like area lights, and there will be shadows, depending on the brightness and object size.
but you should use area lights whenever possible.
area lights are optimized and most of the time faster.
(with neon you need a very small radiosity meshing size to get exact results)

cool...
to increase light/shadow detail you can use smaller a meshing value in the radiosity panel.
it will increase calculation time of course.
