View Full Version : BULLET IMPACT compositing test. CC wanted.
SOE digital 03-02-2006, 02:28 PM Hey got bored today so I thought I'd give something a go. I've already done a muzzle flash test so I figured I'd give bullet impacts a go. This clip is certainly a W.I.P. hence I'm posting it.
Simple test using stock footage from detonationfilms.com (http://www.detonationfilms.com/) composited and tracked (roughly) in After Effects. As ussual I want someone else with fresh eyes to look at it and point out all its flaws for me.
Also, sound is VERY temporary...just there to help sell the effect.

They look pretty good, actually. The only thing that's missing are actual results of the impacts (i.e. bullet holes and/or splintered wood).

That's looking aces!
The practical elements really sell it, usually this kind of shots are "revealed" by the CG-iness of the particles.
Just super.

Wow. Very cool! Would you mind elaborating on the work that went into this clip? Did you just take the clips and key out the smoke and put it into your background footage? Did you have to color correct it? Match the lighting? What problems did you run into?
Good job!

Hmmm...let's see.
Well all the squib footage was shot against a black background. Opened them up in a seperate comp and desaturated them by about 70%, just to get some of the flame/spark colours out.
Changed the b/w levels to give more contrast between the smoke and the black background to make it easier to composite.
Waked them against the live action background plate, set transfer mode to SCREEN (automatically keys our black) and then just keyframed the position to match the movement of the camera.

Cool! Thanks for the description of what you did. I liked that website you posted too... they have a lot of nice (and free) footage to use for practice.

Hi mate! That's a very nice shot! Only critique is the length of the clip - towards the end, without any sound fx or smoke to distract me, I began to wonder about damage to the wall.
Great work!

Ah ye have a good point there.
Yeah naturally I'll be using this kind of technique for quicks 2-3 second shots where I can't be bothered forking out 300bux to use squibs ;)
