In 1168, Youssef Ayyub is dragged off to a war in Egypt by his gung-ho uncle Shirkuh, the only person who seems to appreciate the youth. None of the other emirs see anything of worth in the boy. Even as they march off, the circle of treachery closes in about them and Youssef Ayyub - otherwise known as Saladin - finds himself in the luxurious throne of Egypt, the intended puppet of murderous Sinan and his mysterious master...

from a film concept currently being developed.

Nice sketch. I'm anxious to see what you do with this.

Wow. Someone's looking ;-)
Hi Ila!

I've played about with the foreground and the character of Saladin. I may go back to his more aquiline nose, though. I'll do more sketches and post later.

The challenge says "small" - and suggests bugs. So I'm considering a switch here...

Ma n Pa Dung Beetle see off their reluctant son. These are attempts to combine the bug with working class, lovable simpleton parents.

Woa, that's a FLY, man ... you must have a good reason for all those nice & proper edge loops just for a tiny little wing. ... but .. That da fly!

So far so good, I like the way your first model is turning out. Cant wait to see some more.

nice gif. I'm assuming you're using modo?

I dig the fly. his eyes kind of look like a pixelated tv screen. How cool would that be to use THAT as a texture.

ila:
yeah, I know. I can't sleep at night if the loops aren't flowing ;-)

se7enthcin:
that's not a bad idea. I'm thinking of a sliding dark spot vaguely within a faceted eye sphere (not as transparent as it appears here). But not sure what it will look like.

@3D_explorer
Hehe, I've been watching your bugs, too! Nice!

@a-papantoniou
Thanks! Funny enough, this paint helped me with the fly texturing as well, which I didn't bother painting up. I find it helpful finding the elements (and their density) via paints - and not ion 3D.

I'll have a turntable of the fly soon.

turntable of Pudz riding the monster ball of dung.
H.whatever quicktime codec. 3MB (right click image)

I think I may have gotten too detailed in the shading.
The base forms are a bit muddied - I'd like to get a
more obvious contrast between the realistically shaded
shit and toonish characters.
More soon.

I went back in and made the shapes clearer, cut back on detail and tooned him up a bit. Check out the attachment (http://www.stickman.de/content/temp/JourneyBegins/turntable_pudz.mov)for a turntable. (same link - file updated)

hi David, what's up. :)

dont know if you've been told this cause i haven't read all the previous posts but i have a suggestion before it's too late :D
I think it's kind of important for you to work on the image readability, as I can hardly tell what it is in a first look. I think this is consequence of both the character's silouette and the color scheme. My sight goes directly to the red pants and its yellow buttons, and I find it hard to understand the character's face and pose. It's a cool pose though, it's just difficult to read that way. My advice is that you try different approaches or draw thumbnails with ideas, because it's probably something you should fix before going any further.

Anyway I think it's a fun idea and I'm sure this will end up looking great, keep it up David, I'll be watching this.

Hi Andy!
YEs, yes! Very true. I've already taken one step in clearing up the forms / colors but you're right - not far enough. Lighting will be a problem for me as well. I'm not as solid in it as I am with modelling, so I tend to rush through it.
As for scribbles - I didn't post most of my variations. I don't think anyone would recognize anything in them ;-) Pudz will only be seen poking his head around the dung ball.... that's the impetus in kind of rushing through here. Next step will be to lay everything out with rough geometry.

Please come back with your crits. Very helpful!

Updated shading approach. I'll push the simplicity factor even more in the future... I promise!

I've gone horizontal - that's certain. But I'm still uncertain as to how I should lay out the elements. Great tips from Ila...

Getting closer. I've got a shading concept that I think will work with some polish. Also scribbled in things that I still plan to get in there, things that allude to Dung's coming adventures. Also unhappy with his facial expression. Doesn't yet hit the nerve...
Feedback welcome!

Hey, David,

is that front right guy a relative of Nick from a different project? ;)
I loved your initial Saladin sketch. Aah, memories... :)

OK, now I'm subscribed, waiting for updates.

I like the composition but I think the idea of "the journey begins" is being lost.

Looks like your having fun! Thats what I like the best, is it worth it any other way?!

After taking a breath and looking at your most recent submission, I have to admit, I dont feel a great journey, Is there more to the concept that I dont see yet? I wish you Luck!
