I had this idea about nice landscape and small creatures and this is the opportunity to realize it :)

I am still working on creature's look, but I'll post that one soon.

I started with my models
Here it still can be man or woman.
I'll model one first and will continue from this stage for the other face.
They are different race, so I plan to make fairy or elf girl and maybe gnome man.

Thanks people :)

That's a good idea Vedic
Ears and cheeks look really bad
I still need to fix the mesh, but I don't like this face so much, so I'll work on it a bit, before I go to the detail. :)
I just like to see how it will look with color and hair a :)

I'll post an update soon
Have fun and thanks again for the advice

Nice start with the goblin Maja... I already appreciate his personality... of course... this face nedd certainly more tweaking... but I can feel something special in his glance, a very good point...

About the concept sketch... I don't really understand the story... or maybe it's only the story of life... certainly sufficient... the realization can make the difference...

...I wish you much fun is this challenge... much progression in your art... best of luck for you.

Waitong for more now... good continuation Maja...

Yes, I also like him more now.
Specially his nose :D

The face is still only covered with color, no bump added.
I have to bodypaint it and see how it will look then, but first I have to do modeling of the main characters...

The concept sketch is so bad, I am ashamed of it :)
I'll scan and color it on saturday, and then you will see what I want to make

Thank you, I really have fun
Specially when I think that I made the body in an hour :)
I needed whole week last year, and only with watching other mothels or following a tutorial
This one came impulsive, and it looks ok, I guess

Now, little about my story...
I'll have this goblin on the picture, and a really small fairy with her pet-horse-insect
The fairy was injured and the goblin took care of her.
Even if goblins are mean by nature, this one just couldn't leave the fairy laying there.

On my picture, you'll see the moment, when the fairy is already well, and she is preparing to go home, which is far, far away, since she cannot fly and has to walk the way home.
She says goodbye to the sad goblin, who gives her last good advices.

I'll try to model my daughter's face for the fairy.
She is such a beauty , and I want to use that
You got to see that smile...

So, the concept picture is coming on saturday...

thanks again for the comment, I really appreciate it

I'm looking forward to the concept image! For the body and face you may want to use some human body and face pictures for references. Both are rather intricate. Also for topology consider looking at pictures of the muscles as well, and create the edgeloops around the muscles. I find this a rather nice way of tackeling topology.

Ok Nathan, now... just tell me what "intricate" means, what "edgeloops" exactly are (I understand it all together, but not what it exactly means) and maybe I can try to realize your advice :)
Does :intricate" means hard or heavy??? or something that way?

I have very good muscle references, but I guess it would be loosing of time, because I decided to make clothes for the goblin :)
I still have to add wrinkles and shading to the face... and that will be more usefull than making the body more detailed

The sketch will be much more precise than the current one. Thank God I am not so bad at drawing

Thanks Ray :)
I'll try to update it regulary
Let's see how fast I am ...

Womball
03-10-2006, 12:28 AM
Intricate means that the face has very subtle, complex forms and shapes. Edgeloops are circles/ovals of edges or vertices. In a face there should at least be a circle around the mouth and nose and around the eyes and ears (seperate circles/ovals). There should be a way in every CG program to be able to select "contiguous edges" or "edge loops".

atra
03-10-2006, 09:28 AM
I understand now :applause:
Thanks!

Ok, I have many edgeloops around the eyes and also about the mouth
4-6 I think :)
That makes it easyer to control the look
And I can also use some tools to bring those points in shape

I am kind of curious sometimes, that's why I like to have everything prepared before I go into details
But I'll sure tweak a bit more when I have all characters ;)

as other people mentioned before the mesh needs more work.

flow is what your mesh needs.
and another thing is composition
color is another issue which can help to have a good picture

Shahabp, thanks for the advice, mate :)

yes, it all needs more work ... I am just trying to get some free time and continue working.
I have a huge list , with what needs to be improved... I'm glad you cannot see it
And I've got very active 3 year old girl here, which thinks that this computer belongs to her :banghead:

So I mostly work with Spongebob on one half of the screen and my model (which is very small then) on the other half...

I really need to do something about the colors. I'll try to find some more reference photos...
Thanks again

Hello Ray,

Sorry, but I don't think that I'll be able to work in the next week.

My and my baby got the flu and the whole family has high temperature...
All I can think of is bed now :)

I'll be back in couple of days.
See you then

atra
03-27-2006, 05:25 PM
Ok, I'm back to life... well, almost :)
This was the longest flu I ever had.

The temperature outside changed by 15 Grad Celsius from one day to another.
But I guess I'll be ok, since I am still alive :D

I'll try to post some updates tonight.

Womball
03-27-2006, 06:14 PM
That's good to hear your better. Flu's aren't ever fun. Compositionally your drawing is a little confusing. The scale of objects further away from the camera should be smaller. There are some flowers by the giant goblin which must be huge! You may want to set up the scene with rough stand ins. That way you get a start on your scene, and your scale is established! Can't wait to see what else you have done.

atra
03-27-2006, 10:21 PM
Hi Nathan :)

You're right, as the time passed I started asking myself if the flu will ever finish.
Wasn't fun at all :(

I wasn't sure how to make the goblin, so I did some research (as if it were a scientific topic...) :curious:
In amost all stories, where goblins were described, they were small, and skinny and ugly...
So I decided to make this one less ugly and as big as a 6-7 year old child.
So, the flowers are maybe too big, but I wanted to show how huge the small goblin can be to a fairy, which is as small as a mouse

the idea came, as I started thinking how the world looks to my daughter.
10 year old kids are "very big people" to her, and her daddy is a giant :)

That's a good idea about the scene composition
I'll wait few more days, untill I am well, and then I'll do a rough scene preview.
That will help me very much, since I am still deciding how big or small is everything going to be

For now... an update is coming in few minutes

Ok, I just did a rough hand model
Still have to tweak it a lot, but for today is enough :D

Womball
03-28-2006, 05:52 AM
The hand looks real good! What about the underside? That's where most mistakes in modelling seem to happen, that I have noticed. Lack of a palm or the pinky side muscle is really noticable. I forget both muscles (actually there are 4, but they are 2 in a group) names.

So I still will not be able to finish my image :(
Time has passed so fast, and I almost forgot when the deadline is.

The main reason is that I got a great now job :bounce:
But because of it all other activities suffer...

Anyway, I'll finish my picture when I am on holidays... it will not be ready for the challenge, but it will be finished for sure :)

Aw, I was looking forward to seeing it done. Although a job is more important. Although now you can take longer to finish it, which will allow you to be more objective with it. Sometimes when you focus to intensely on a work you miss mistakes.

I just found some time to play with the skin, and I like it like this
Just need to add more structure and wrinkles.... but those freckles make him look just the way I imagined him...

Good luck everyone!
Just 2 more days :D

There, you are right :applause:
In a challenge, details have to be done quickly, or not at all, when they are not so much visible...
But my goal is to learn from this one...
still have some problems how to make the skin, and I want to master that as much as I can

I really enjoy it.
It's the first time I work 100% what I have learned (untill now I could use only 2-3 healing methods and that was just not enough), and it's so much fun :D

I have made many reference images of my little daughter, and I think that it will help me very much to model her character faster -> that will leave more time for texturing and lighting...

And... good luck again, friends!!

Ok, just one more update :D

I've changed the haircut and added some structure to the skin.

Womball
05-27-2006, 08:08 PM
Looking better! The eyes are a tad big and the mouth is a bit small. The edges of the mouth should line up with the iris of the eyes. You may want to study the shaders a bit. Shading a skin is what makes it look realistic. Texture just help to enforce that.

MT-Cup
05-27-2006, 08:47 PM
Atra, this is such a wonderful concept. I hope you try to finish it, despite not making the deadline for the challenge.

atra
05-28-2006, 09:41 AM
Thank you Adrienne :)
Yes, I will finish it for sure
I have a clear idea about the whole scene, and have thoutght about all details that will come
I would be angry with myself if I would not finish it :D

Hi Nathan :)
Yep, I thought of making the characters not too realistic, so I put big, big eyes, but the mouth is really disturbing now
Now, that I don't have a deadline,I'll have time to change the figure a bit :D

For the skin, I still have to paint it :)
All I have done in the past year in 3d were interiors and skin shaders, because I wanted to be ready at every moment (like for a challenge) to make a skin in couple of minutes (when I already have a texture)
:)

I have some more tweaking on this one, and I still have to paint the hands (because I didn't manage to find enough time to paint the whole texture until now)
So I want to spend some more time and study some more faces, then, the shader will be there in a minute

I prefer using different layers, better than using finished materials from the program
Just need to do some wrinkles, and then comes the shader.

:bounce:
