So my idea was having a guy in the middle of no where with his car out of gas, mid day long journey ahead. Will post sketches soon.

Here's the First sketch
Going to have a guy out of gas in the middle of nowhere sweat loaded and no gas for 20 miles, hot day in the desert. Grabbing his gas can in desperation.

Here's a color test. The shadows will add the contrast to the foregroud, but I'm looking for an overall washed feeling for the background to add a sence of the heat

Critique me please, this is the first of this scale I've done.

Also thought of adding a pissed off, feet on the dash, filling her nails woman in the car. Waddya think?
Also going to add brush and bland cacti into the background. Was going to add joshua tree's but I think too few would know what they were and may a lush feeling.

Hi Zyrinx.

I think you are using Photoshop, aren't you? I definitely recommend using greyscale first, no colours. Right now the lightness values of your colours are not properly defining the forms, but that's what they normally do! If your values aren't correct the colour hue won't help to create the form properly.

For a good example of what I mean take a look at Papaerclip's thread (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?t=322551). She did some great concept sketches with greyscale.
Also, RebeccaK's new concepts (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?t=322562&page=13&pp=15)are done in greyscale first, to establish the forms.

When you are done with your values, you can create a new layer set to "color" blending mode and apply the hue and saturation you would like while the value is taken from the greyscale layer below. See?

I'd say do that first.

Keep going.

looks like a cool concept so far... hehe, "the journey begins" for sure!

i'd loev to see the scene fleshed out some more, detils in the desert and perhaps ven more on the guy (Sweat, hair, emotion), push the ideas :)

Mr Mu - I'll give that a try when I get home from work. Never worked that way before, but it can't hurt, and your right, the guy kind of fades into the background.

storyForge - Yeah, it will be very highly detailed I was just seeing what the colors should look like.

Next, going to try the greyscale thing and work in the shrubs and cactus

Does anyone have any opinion on the nagging wife in the car? I'm leaning away from it due to more work and it may take away from him.

Well tried the bw thing, dunno, also had an art teacher friend help with the composition a little, thanks Jen.

Okay, sorry, I've changed my mind completely. I think I'm going to test out a new idea.

Evolution type thing. I don't think I'm ripping anyone off with this. There's a couple monkey ideas, but I'm going to go back further. A fish taking it's first steps on land. All the fish around will be staring in awe and wonder. The earth will still be breaking and forming behind them. More reference idea refinement and such tomorrow. I really like the idea wich is funny because I'm not much a fan of the full scale evolution theory, but anyway

Please ignore the "Origins of video games" and the pong paddles in the middle (i was brainstorming). I will clean it up tomorrow.

I will probably spew more ideas out throughout this thing, but I think I'm going to put a deadline of Tuesday on my idea selection, so please check back and let me know what you think of them.

Thought I'd try and get the guy looking like something my style. Starting to like it a bit more, may actually put some time into this thing.

Going to stick with original idea. Came out with about 4 others but this stuck the strongest.

For those that didn't notice I flipped the composition too. Something I read today about flipping the art to read from right to left made sense, thought I'd give it a try.
