There will be lots more foliage and some insects in this image. The main characters are elves.

It's a good idea for sure. I see this more as a night scene. What do you think?

Samanthie
03-03-2006, 02:07 AM
Thank you JTD. :) Yes I think it will be night and with some fog. I have to get going on my line work. I think I need to bring the male character closer. Hope to work on this tonight.

Thank you for your comment Norvman.

I have decided to do something different. The little fox family has escaped a terrible forest fire. Their journey will lead them across the great lake to a new home.

I sized down the fox family from my original concept. There will be fire on the mountains in the background. I haven't decided yet to add a daddy fox but if I do he will probably be on the shore awaiting his family.

nice begining.

but you should work more in material , colors etc in big brushs to settle the atmosphere and not the final line art as concept sketch.

and try to avoid some ideas likes "everywhere saw elfs etc"

animals can be a good thing :)
i'll look forward.

Samanthie

Thank you for your advice Neozoom, much appreciated.

I worked on the image a little this afternoon. I am having a difficult time deciding how big to make the little fox family. I want them to be larger so I can capture expression better but then it doesn't seem to fit the challenge anymore. I may be changing my concept yet again. We'll see. Thanks everyone for all the comments so far.:)

nice going samanthie, its alil too early to feed any comments but i'd like to see the fox characters to have a well blend interms of the lighting and the mood of the scenes:)for now they seems alil too bright,i'm sure it'll make a different when u have more progress on the background.
keep it up my friend

Yes I agree about the brightness on the foxes. I also think this looks like an end to a journey rather than a beginning so I've been rethinking my concept..again. I have a pretty good idea in the works so hope to post my latest stuff soon.

This is it! :) I may still use my current bg (without the foxes) and add it to this one but needed a concept sketch so here 'tis. The canoe in the forefront may be facing the wrong way..not sure yet.(typical way I do things)lol. Well anyway this is a story about lives interupted. The family must leave their home in order to be safe (probably from settlers or fire). Still working on this storyline.

I've made more changes. There is still much to do with my characters, lighting and atmosphere. I changed the orientation of my canvas again and some other details.
I love to paint trees so I've worked alot with those and with the rocks. I know I have to work on the water so it flows around the canoes more.

nice caustics. although you really don't get that in a river. it's more of a hotel swimming pool thing. but it's damn pretty!

i think i actually liked the wolves concept better than this one. it's like the disney anthropomorphized animal thing. they just tell this kind of story better than people could. that's just my opinion, but i think you should give the woves another shot.

either way, it's lookin hot and i can't wait to see more.

Thank you Panu. It probably looks mid journey since they are leaving one forest area for a new one but they really do have a ways to go.:D Hopefully when I finish the water around the boats the perspective will improve. Do you think that will help or is it something else I could work on to improve the boats perspective? Thanks.:)

for some reason, i enjoyed the version before last better. the darker rocks created more detph and gave some mystical look&feel to the scene...

Played around with this some more today. I changed the water quite a bit and brought it up more around the base of the canoes and added some reflections. I've got more to do with the branches above because they are still rather rough and I need to work on the figures in the middle canoe.

Hi! nice up date beauty color & compositionIn my opinion I think that the depth in behind in this pic it look like they're in the same depth at the middle. I think you'd put some fog or cloud in the rear so it will make it look more far than now.:)

its gettin better and better nice work with the fog,

did you try smoke for the fires it may work, and i think a little lightning trick is needed, maybe more shadow to the bottom of the canoes becouse of the light source direction.

keep going

Hi... was about to call you samantha then... Debbie! Gorgeous colour work on this piece and a subject I adore. The light effects at the back are lovely and that silhouette of the wolf is a beautiful touch and give the whole thing a real mystical feel. Only crit I have is that you have things painted on your people that are brighter than your light source, like the white feathers... generally in fire or candle flame, everything white would actually be tinted a slightly darker shade of yellow than the flame, and everything else down the scale accordingly. Oh... unless they've some kind of spiritual magical essence to them, in which case, forgive me my rantings! Other than that, I love everything else the composition leads the ey around the pic nicely and the trees help keep you going back to the main characters.

I took your advice Sam and have toned down the white areas. I think it has helped alot. There are only just a couple of very tiny white areas I will get to tomorrow sometime. I added a few more details inside the first canoe.

Thanks for looking.

TheFirstAngel

I agree to what Sam said about the general lightsetup. A darker environment gives lightsources a stronger effect, as for your piece seems being majorly illuninated by a diffuse global light, you have very low contrasts. you still have more than 2 month of time, wich offers the possebileties of a close review. the piece itself is great already, dont take me wrong, i love how you paid great attention on the character design, as well as the huge amount of details. what i would sugest was to give values a closer look.
take the copy of your piece on a new layer set layermode to lumminance, create a grey layer under it. so you have a black and white version of your piece you can show hide and it immediately desaturates your piece on one click. this gives you the option of finesculpt the values. think in distances, lightsources, falloffs on distances.
also, i cant make out any hard shadows. shadows in a distant range become blurry, but near range shadows are sharp and help they eye much to model volumes. something worth an attomp could be painting (on a new layer) a shadowpass, this also will help your piece a lot i think.dont worry about a few harder contrasts, look at your trees you painted in the upper left area, you instantly get a great feeling for their volume. I would love to see you polish out the full podential of your piece, and i think its so much time left, you easily can dare to give it a few more strokes :)
I hope my crit wasnt too harsh and a few points and tricks help you. keep up your great work! cheers :)

Samanthie
03-31-2006, 03:44 PM
Hi Angel, Thank you for your comments!:) They were not harsh at all. I'm very much into learning as I paint. I'll work on this tonight and see how it goes with the b&w layer trick.

Samanthie
03-31-2006, 05:26 PM
well...I think I need a little help as far as shadows go(figures). I have a sort of backlighting going on from the sky and I have the torches which are lighting the front and a little to the left. If I place the shadows falling across and to the right like I am thinking they go(not exactly sure here) I am going to lose some details I don't want to lose. I really don't want shadows to fall across the baby's face for instance. Any extra advice appreciated. Thanks!:)

OliveBeard
03-31-2006, 06:59 PM
Nicely done...I'm curious as to how exactly you pulled off the reflections (I have a few ideas but...); it seems like a lot of meticulous work!

Good luck!

Samanthie
03-31-2006, 07:44 PM
Hi Jacob, thank you for the compliment. To make the reflections I duplicated the layer with the figures in the canoe and flipped it moved it up and cut away areas that overlapped where they shouldn't. Then I imagined where my waves would be and cut across parts of the image to give a more natural wave look and then deformed the image to match the movement of the waves. Then on a new layer I added 'paint' in a little lighter shade than the waves and used the smudge brush to define the shape of the waves around the canoe. I then duplicated the wave layer and put it on dodge, lowered the opacity and it gave it a more crystal look. :)

I've been watching this thread for a while now and I really like how it's been developing. I just have a few crits though, mostly just personal preference things. First of all, there's part of the water on the boat that goes like, straight up and it looks hairy? I'm not sure if I'm missing it but it just doesn't seem right and doesn't fit the flow of the rest of the water. I feel that the moths in the corner seem to crowded together, unless you plan to sign over that area, in which case it could be a nice touch. I think the lighting in the upper left is a little bit too bright, if they were taking torches then I'd think that there wasn't enough light to navigate otherwise. I would eliminate that upper left lighting, and make it more of just light from the torches, put the rocks more in shadow to give it a really dramatic feel.

Well that's me blabbering on, hopefully you will find something useful out of my comment :) Really great work though overall, honestly even if you don't fix these things the work definitely stands alone, good luck to you :)

I definitely prefer this without the overhanging foliage/moss, it was distracting from the characters before. I still think you should eliminate the really bright light from the to left, put more shadows into the rocks, and make the fires more of the main light source, otherwise I feel it defeats the purpose of torches :)

Ramy..Thanks for all your suggestions. I left out the moss and got rid of the bright light. I think that change added alot of balance. I am still working on the rocks. I am very tempted to multiply this image but then I lose too much detail. I'll have to play with this some more later.

Thanks for looking!

Why did it take me so long to say hello?
I wasn't sure how to feel about what I was looking at. The rocks and the torches look too much 3d, I suppose.
I have learned to like them. Now I find this piece mesmerizing.

So I can see that you put the final touch on your entry. Still, can I get you to reconsider?
It bugs me that the middle canoe has a green line that gets mixed with the water.
And the middle foliage above the travellers looks too much like scribbles. I would take them out and let show through the fog some more rocky silhouettes like the one you have already.
And, and...a hint of the village they just left. The journey is beginning.

I hope you din't find me too pushy. I REALLY like this work.

Daniel..Thank you!:)

Hello Gilbert, Thank you for all of your comments I appreciate them! :) Yes I know about my scribbly overhanging plants.lol I have been trying to do something about that. I rather like them from a distance but if you look closely you can see they are scribbly. I don't think I will remove them but instead work with them so they don't appear out of place with the rest of the image. Adding a hint of a village is not something I had planned but I'll think about it. Fires are probably not finished yet. Please tell me where on the canoe is the green line mixing with the water..you mean on the bottom of the boat or is the green color itself on the design of the boat?

Deb

The green color in the triangular shapes along the canoe blends to much with the water...on my screen anyway.
You understand that the village as small as you could hint of it, would help you respect the theme of this contest, I find. Hope this helps.
And thanks for the reply.

You have very unique style. I like the decorations on the canoes, my only suggestion is to make the canoes look more woddy-ish, so maybe some cracks and shades will do the trick.

ok im back :)

first of all you got great textures and and picture is getting better mostly but there are things i want to say:
right side of the river is getting too much light for that light source especially the trees on the back,
and i liked overhead moss more lighted way in my opinion try something between this dark and that ligted mosses

ok and ive got an idea i think it can look pretty cool if it can be done (i didnt try thats why im speaking like this:D) here:

about the fires again, i hope to describe it right ; fire heats the air above and deforms the sight (i think the liqufy filter may work for this idea)
(sorry for weak english of mine)

im sure that you can do it (hope you dont get angry with me for the extra work for you:blush: )

see you later:wavey:

Thank you Gilbert, I see what you mean about the canoe color so I will fix that. Your idea of adding just a hint of a village is a good one and I'll work on that this evening. I have to decide just where and what for the village but that's the fun part.:)

Israel, Thank you and I'll try to give the canoes more of a natural texture.:)

Hi Berkay and thanks for your comments and I understand you.:) I'll work on the lighting and the moss and am looking forward to trying what you suggested for the fires.

I have worked alot with this tonight. New updates have been made on the texture of the canoes. I have added the moss and overhead branches back in but refined them. A village has been added in the distance and changes have been made to the water and to some of the landscape. I am still working on the lighting trying to tone down the tree on the right. There is still more to do with fine details on the figures. I hope the new changes work but if not please post your opinion. I appreciate all of the input made so far, thanks everyone!:)

very cool image... but there are too many part that look awkward, tree/leaf area highlight on the boat, although the texture work is good i would have to point out that it is in need of some serious work (which i am sure is ahead :)) anyways too early to really get into the gritty details of everything. good stuff! :wip:

Berkay, Thank you! I tried the idea for the heat above the fires but haven't found the effect that works yet. Still working on that. I'm glad you like the updates. The village was Gilbert's idea and I like it too.:)

Hi Debbie, good updates you have made with the image i like the village at far and liked it so much also the updates in the water and textures looks great too, i only suggest (personal opinion) you make some kind of reason for leaving their homes for example a fire in the tents or trees falling down at the river where some are hitting the tents... :)

Wow, that came together really well since I last saw it.

One small criticism (since you're doing the final coloring): The brightly colored sky is kindof distracting. You have a rich, beautiful foreground--if I were you, I wouldn't want to distract from that.

Excellent work!

Mohammed, thank you for your comments and for your suggestion for a reason to leave the village.

Jacob, thank you and I hope the new changes will make the sky a little less distracting.

I wanted to change my canoes since they looked too modern. I have added some fine details to the trees, moss, water and to the village.

When creating this image I did research on the Native Americans of the eastern forests, mainly the Algonquin tribes around 1850. This image is loosely based on what I learned about the Algonquin. You can learn about the Algonquin people here;

Tonight I've worked on making new fires, and corrected some mistakes I made when I changed the back canoe's direction. I have set the village on fire which was suggested to me by Mohammed. Some subtle smoothing of edges made to the figures. Please let me know if the changes I have made both with the previous image and with this one are going in the right direction.

Thanks for looking and for your comments!:)

Today I worked on the fires on the spears, water, moss, fire in the village and some fine details on the first person in the canoe. I am alot happier with the fire today than with what I did with them last night. I think if I do anything more to the fire/spears it will be to add some more smoke.

Hi Samanthie, I want to say that this painting has real artistic value! It looks like something for Silk Cloth print (It does have that rich silk-like effect, so my props to you!

Back to the topic: May I suggest having a wider range of emotion on the people. They all have the same form of expression on their faces. I think the faces are the highlight of this piece because that's where we will focus on. So it would help if each of them have different expressions for the same emotion. Like one is crying, one is looking down in sadness, one is looking forward ahead with absolute resolve....

The village on fire is not immediately clear. Add more huts and bigger fires?

Good work and all the best!

I like your use of warms and cools. My suggestion on this illustration would be to soften some of your edges outside of the focal point and harden your edges more within the figures. Much of the environment has a bit too much of a consistent brush application. You have a very nice narrative going on right now.

Minminxu, Thank you!:) I agree hair and clothes need more definition. I probably lost some water detail when I blurred the bg to bring the figures more in focus. I'll see what I can do about that.

Cliff, Thank you very much and I will try to define the figures edges and soften others. :)

Debbie, I am no expert, but as a general rule you should avoid tangent surfaces like I see a few in this picture.
The rocks/water edge is mainly to blame here:
-with the first man's right shoulder
-with the head of first woman
-with the tips of second and last canoes.
Make the water line pass frankly behind the characters and objects, or away from them.
It will make for a more pleasing overlaps and increase the depth of your picture.

Hope you find that helpful.

Journey of Escape...

It is summer. It is a time for hunting game and for gathering together. As plans are made for fishing news arrives that invaders have come and it is not safe to remain in the summer village.
The families that live here must abandon their homes and leave quickly.
Some will take the forest trails and others will leave by canoe in the hope they will be reunited soon.
As evening draws near those leaving by river gather up most of their belongings and place everything they can into the last canoe. Flame
lighted spears that were once used to lure fish will now be used to light the way of escape.
Everything is ready and it is time to go.The fire is still burning where the villagers were gathered just a short time ago making plans to fish.
As they journey down the river's path a young mother's heart is filled with worry as she gently quiets her infant son. Her husband who is brave and strong looks about keenly for anything or anyone that would bring them harm. He knows the river well. It will not be an easy task for the invaders to follow. Two young wolves appear from the brush to bid farewell. The young man in the second canoe comforts his wife by telling her it is a good
sign...

Thanks to all of you who helped me with this image. I think I learned a few things that I can apply to my next image.

Fantastic work!! You definitely created a considerable amount of depth in the final piece (another crit I was going to offer, but have too busy at the moment).

The darkness is excellent, with the flame exterminating it with extreme prejudice; lots of contrast.

In regards to your research: I grew up in West Central Wisconsin. As part of a school trip, we went to a museum of the history of Wisconsin (somewhere near Madison) which naturally included indian history. The tour guide pointed us to a beautiful painting entitled something like "Arrival to the Midwest"--essentially showing european settlers supposedly meeting with Wisonsin indians (there was some telling part of the painting that said "Wisconsin" that I can't remember). Only problem was, the indian's were wearing loin cloths and mohawks."The artist should have done their research," was what the tour guide told us.

Excellent work, and additional kudos for taking the time to learn about your subject. I do not look forward to submitting a competing piece! ;)
