View Full Version : Maya Books
Bounce 03-01-2006, 08:37 PM Hi guys, I have just started teaching a Maya class and have some students asking about good books to read, I have never read a maya book as I prefer online tutes and so forth.
Can anyone suggest some good books that cover the basics to maybe some intermediate level of modeling, texturing, animating and rendering using maya?
Any suggestions will be a big help.
Thanks.

I have been pleased with learning Maya so far:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/search/ref=br_ss_hs/002-9688346-8108860?search-alias=aps&keywords=maya
But I found that I like videos that I can follow along with lecture better than books:

I love those Digital Tutors videos. They cover everything step by step. I highly recommend those. Gnomon videos are also good, though they seem more complex.

I'm still trying to figure out how you scored a teaching gig without reading a book! LOL! I love that.
I am a fan of the Gnomon Videos. I have heard good things about the Maya 7 series from Alias. I read all the Maya 6 books from Alias and thought they good (not great). I think a must have book is 'Stop Staring' for facial animation/setup.

I haven't had a look at this one, but I know that his online tuts are good:

I had ordered some books and DVD's from Maya which have been put on back order, and now I am strongly considering cancelling that and getting the Maya Beginner Bundle from Digital-Tutors. Checking out the outline, and all this set covers, it's turned me to jelly. It covers much more than the same monetary value from Maya. PLUS, if I fork out for the (EDIT: FedEX) shipping to New Zealand, about a week instead of two or more months...
I tell ya, CGSociety and these forums have been without question the best learning material I've found ;)
If you want to give them a good book, warm up a good printer and print off the Maya online documentation, that should keep em busy ;)
