This one leaves me wondering what the hell Adobe was thinking, but AE 5.5 has a hidden menu item.
<CTRL><SHIFT> click your edit/preferences/general menu. Release the ctrlshift and close the general prefs window. Now open up the edit/preferences menu tree again, and there will be a new item at the bottom of the list.
It has controls to delete the frame cache after a user-specified number of frames has been rendered (to speed rendering) plus a few others...
