Today I am workin my magic. I have managed to stick my pencil far enough in my ear to get a few Ideas...
But first, I wish everyone good luck. You will need it, cuz I know the best coffee shop in town!
I Love this place.
Ideas:
Young lads imagination
-Rocket in backyard
-Bug in small rocket in boys hand
-Feiry person that lives in wall, inviting you into a magic entrance
Woman passing away in a hospital bed, family is there(majority of the image is her happy soul begining her journey).
Finding a Hole
-To the center of the earth
-or a civilization in the center of the earth finds a hole to the surface.
Under Water divers stubbling across an ancient water city, deciding to take the challenge.
A deer saying goodbye, to travel the road to the city and fullfill her dream of wearing nice clothes.
Bugs strapped to a stick pulled over and locked down(catapult) Ready for launch.
Some crazy bugs saying good by as they and supplies are taped to some fireworks.
The journey of man in meditation, travelling through all stages of his life.
Well I look forward to what grows from this....

Finally,
I have decided.
I was going to create the bugs launching off on firworks, but I have decided to go with the amazing story of Noah's Arc.
I will explore the idea of the Arc being a flying machine. Now that references have been gathered it is time to work on some concept sketches.

My concept sketches, do not include animals, emotion, and possibly some people begging for there life-As a few storys tell, Also I want to create the perspective of a huge Arc floating above the cliffs.

What maya are you using, complete or unlimited?
No im not in the 2d challenge, but I have thought about it. It would be very hard to paint in photoshop with a mouse! So I think I should wait tell I get one of drawing pad things.

Im not sure if its apropriate to show the people begging for there lives; I need to research a few more perspectives...

Hi all!
I had a request for more info on a 'how too' with my eyes. So Im going to share some references. I have seen many tutorials and some do work better than others
Cons:
This design is not the best for animated pupils as I use a still image; but hey, make a sequenced map and that fixes that.
I am also using IBL HDRI image for reflections etc so heavy scene changes may require special care.
Also you need to take care with reflections and Ambient Occlusion from the eye lidz etc.
Pros:
Easy to set up. And easy to import into scenes.
Once you have made one Eye you can replace the Iris very easily, to make a new eye.
Soon you get to choose from a library of you eyes!!!
This tutorial is the basics
http://www.andrew-whitehurst.net/eyeTut.html
So... your eyes are painted in your favorite paint program- I love painting new eyes!!!
Then it gets a little more complicated as a FacingRatio helps make your lense look better(fresnel falloff for transparency) Steves tutorial helps with missing details in Andrews tutorial:
http://stevenchan.us/publications/mayafacingratio
Then you will want to use ambient Occlusion on the Outer Lense(outer sphere).
So If your rendering with MR:
Go to Ambient colour of your Material Shader and add a mib_amb_occlusion from the mental ray tab. Defaults are usually fine but if its too ruff I will up the samples to 32
I am very happy people share there knowledge. Send me a sample of your eyes.
And if you have other techniques, I would love to hear!
Good Luck
Pete2003
03-05-2006, 07:14 PM
Hey thanks for sharing your techniques and posting links to the tutorials! Great Z-brush work too so far!
Terragens a great little program but when you do decide on your landscape Id do some photoshop work to try and get rid of that 'Terragen look'. Im sure you know what I mean :) (I think it mainly comes down to the 'noisy' look of the textures that terragen creates)
Good luck and keep it up!
Pete.

Fictional interpretation:
One day in the late 20th century a man by the name of Robert Ballard, made an amazing discovery. He is an oceanographer who is famous for finding the Titanic, among other things.
On this day, at a depth of 450FT in the Black Sea he found an ancient shoreline and an anoxic abyss. Soon after this moment he was gifted a vision.
Brought back to a time before Babel, He saw the last surviving descendent of Seth. This was an early-mid aged man, around the age of 300 years old. The sky's spoke to this man, and called him Noah; while Noah spoke to him as God. God spoke of unhappy things he had seen of man. He considered these things to be irreversable. He did not, and would not allow this to continue and said the fountains of the great deep are breaking up and the windows of the heavens will open. After time Noah came to understand there would be a great flood covering all that is living and he was to spend the next 300 years building a giant ship to carry his family, two of each animal and supplies to last over 40 days and 40 nights of horror.
Durring this time, Noah and his growing barn of animals was almost totally ignored by his neighboring ante-diluvians. They could not see the big picture. There lives and memories were shortened by sin, and the fact that the Messianic line had been defeated, making the average life span go from 950 to 120 years. So many generations passed by, only seeing a giant barn of animals.
When the Arc was finished construction, it was time to leave. The Journey Begins, by saying a last goodbye to the world as they know it. An emotion not clear with words.
Robert wakes up, sleeping face down on the keyboard of his computer. He looks for more information about the Abyss, realizing it is the only one of its kind in the world. He comes to understand how there is no oxygen down there and 100% preservation can be found. Shaking the keyboard dents off his face, he wonders if the Arc could be found!!
Robert doesn't know this yet, but he is going to find the Arc; It's just something nobody suspected- A fully preserved aquatic-flying ship! Shhhh Don't tell.

Perhaps some of these will be needed to anchor our ship!
Some test rocks made from one original.
Different textures and displacements on the same instance, gives a lot of flexibility in the poly-count department.

Dude, I like your rocks! What did you use for the texture? I like how the boat idea is coming along as well. Are you going to incorporate storm clouds in the atomosphere, or is the scene going to be pre-danger? Thanks for you ideas by the way.

03-09-2006, 04:26 AM
Thanx, So rocks how too.... Your trying to distract me! Ha I am not telling... ok ok
1.A simple poly soccer primitive ruffed into the shape of a generic rock, I used Maya.
2.I finish UVs and export for Zbrush.
3.In Zbrush I do real-time bumpmapping in the wonderful projection master, and then hand painted texturing.
4.In this case I created two different textures.
5.Once this is done I can use Zbrushes modeling tools to reshape the rocks, saving diff versions as displacements.
Back in Maya I have my original stone instanced up to thousands of times... instances are freindly.
6.The key is mixing up the assorted bumps, textures and displacement maps, to randomize the mix.
7. Now render... I used MR w ambient occlusion on the rock materials ambient color, the main render above doesnt even have a light in the scene.
8. Ask for more info on the type of bump and textures I painted, then I will post a few images and the brushes so you will get the idea.
Cheers

Ok Im struggling with my perspective,
I want to portray Noah, almost in tears having to leave mankind to die.
I want to include his wife, animals, showing its a flying ship.. and godrays.
I like the Idea of the ship being loaded from the side of a mountain or this one. the side of the mountain may be easier, but I really like the idea of a barn that had been built for a few hundred years, growing plants off the side, then rising out of the ground, a little each day as debris gradualy falls off, and leaving a hole behind.
Sometimes I like options, now its killin me!
I am totally open to advice...
Hello David , you have an strong concept here and a nice progress. About your doubts in the perspective maybe you can try with more Noes poses (maybe in his knees touching the ground or looking down with his wife next to him and the animals ) and moving away a little more the camera to have more space.
You can put some animals running around the flying arc cause they didnt got room in the journey .
Hope its help a bit , Keep the good work man and have fun:)

03-11-2006, 02:31 AM
Well, my take on this is that you will want to show that it is, in fact, a flying ark, so the lower right and center ones are prob not your best choice. For the same reason, a flat ground level shot (upper left) won't work so well, as it makes the ark appear very awkward (sp?).
Also, depending on how much sky you want to see, how much emphasis you want placed on God's-rays or approaching storm, vs animals loading or surrounding villages. How 'widescreen' a look are you going for? That will decide a lot of the content you have: wider = more on the ground, ark, and characters, less of the sky the way I see it (unless you choose an angle like #3).
Based on labeling them 1-11 (including the fish eye one) from left to right, top to bottom, my favs are
#2 if you make the ark even more elevated, otherwise it may not be apparent enough that it is airborne. If you do, however, this might be the best one for having detail in both the sky and on the ground: the ark itself woud create a nice separation between earth and sky, and leave lots of room for both. May be harder to realistically/believably work a character into the foreground.
#6 kinda a halfway between #2 and #8-9, with some of hte benefits of both. I would have the camera be a little more elevated tho, if you choose this one (maybe with the ground sloping upwards to provide an explanation for noah standing near the camera.)
#8, 9 I'll lump these two together, they are pretty close to the same. The best for close up details on boarding animals, and easier to work a foreground character into.
That's the way I see it. Good luck!
EDIT: oops, lol you posted new ones as I wrote this. This is in reference to the first set of images, 3 postss back. Sry!

and just an idea why not include people on the ground looking at the ark sort of like an audience.

Many of your shots are from above the ark, which to me lessens the impact somewhat. You've modelled the whole ark and maybe want to show it all but this might not be best for the impact of your picture.
The ark itself is fairly static and ground level is where the action will take place so maybe how about a shot from the point of view of a villager looking up one of the ramps past Noah, who faces the crowd and blocks their way, to the ark, which will have clear air beneath.
Having some animals being loaded and villagers clamouring over each other trying to get up the ramp past Noah should convey the story adequately and not need you to show the whole ark. It would also cut down on the number of people and animals you would have to show - I would find doing a widescreen of that within the time limit completely daunting.
EDIT: just seen page 5 and others suggesting a similar view.

I like the concept, looks awesome.
You should stick with the POV of the last concept, showing the arc from below as big, huge, massive ship, coming from the horizon in perspective. I think you should make it taller, too.
One thing that is bothering me are the eyes. The reflection is too strong in the lens. I saw the tutorial but I didn't get very well the model of your own eye, it seems very spheric, but anyway.
The reflection should be stronger in the blue area than in the lens. The reflection is caused to filter the full light from touching our lens instead of getting fully absorbed. This happens on the "outer" shell, not the inner model. Because our lens absorb the light, they should be very, very dark because not only they are not a reflective surface, but as they are black in natural color.
The way is right now is looking the opposite. They look like they are the source of reflection.
Overall I would reduce the global reflection, but keep in mind that the lens should be the darkest spot in the eyes.
Good luck on the contest

I love a good critique, Thank you. You are right about the eyes. I should master them...
Today I am going to arrive at my goal of a perspective I like. This seems to have become a hard milestone to arrive at. It feels good to be learning this skill. Oh I saw a great painting at the Irish Heather in Vancouver, it had just the right amount of fish-eye, you know the giant one!
It feels good to be able to do this today as my weekend could not allow.
Again...
Best of Luck to all!

This is a ruff cut and paste of different ideas to explore more perspectives.
I feel something growing from this, perhaps Noah waist high in mud pushing a cow and pulling a goat, while looking up to God... In this perspective, or close of, I could have a closer door to the arc revealing stalls etc; Its also nice to be able to show a village, perhaps already flooding!

Yes, absolutely, Noahs Ark is a flaoting ship. It sounded like a good challenge. I beleive anything is possible; and there are so many different storys about the Ark. I liked this version the best, Air Ship. The ships modeling and texturing has been left for next week. It will be a challenge to intigrate the animals, loading area, air ship look, yet still have people think Great Journey- or Noahs Ark. I wanted to slip in a rainbow, but most story versions have this happen at the end of the flood.
For now, I begin work on the flooding village!! This will be fun.
Thanks for your C&C, all is apreciated!

hello, I tried the straight rope snapping and it looks way better, plus Noah now sees that too! It is very stormy. The river was 3D but a lot of post and color correction was done to continue my style LOL. i didnt notice it before but now it really is the flying ark. that is unique, at least seeing it from a different point of view. theres significant progress now since i visited this thread.
but you know from what i remember in the time of Noah it only started to rain after Noah, his family and the animals (by pairs) was inside the ark. God shut the ark and only then the rain, flood came.
that is why i did mention before- for some audience looking at the ark knowing that they were watching Noah building this ship/ark for a very long time (more or less 100 years) and so they think Noah was crazy. But Noah did persevere, remained faithful. The focal point was while the rest of the world was under the spell of unbelief/unrepentant; probably they scrutinize, criticize him and then all of a sudden the rain fell as it never rained before in the history of the world. that was the first time it rained, people could have been shocked and surprised but felt sorry because Noah was right and they didnt believe him. Imagine the look on their faces as the rain fell and the flood started to rise and regrets sets in as they stare at the Noahs ark wishing they were inside but it was too late.
i am also planning to make a movie about this so i dont want mention other details about Noahs flood. but from what you are doing it is definitely great epic image. i've heard some news from the americans that they were now open to the idea that some of the geographic landscape particularly in the area of Washington state and Montana, they now believe have been formed by a global flood. As seen from space that there was a time in the past that there was a big bodies of water on top of this canyons. it was a moving ocean flooded the area and not just glaciel meltdown as suggested by some. because further studies suggest that if it was from glaciel waters it wont be as huge to create the slopes that was seen today in the area. for more than seven decades geologist dismissed the concept of a biblical flood. they thought it was developed very very gradual (millions of years) but now modern science reveals the answer, an ocean on top of the states once flooded the area.

I know, when the door was closed, but I almost put a rainbow in too. I wanted a bit more of a punch, or the Ark would have been in the water. Have you watched the BBC Noahs Ark special, It has a few jewels of interest! I personally think the Earth could be flooded today, and dry tomorrow, knowing anything is possible.
I read so many different interpretations of the noah story, The man building a ship for the great flood is seen in many different scriptures, a lot of people in different religions have there own version. Or maybe there were a few ships scattered around the globe? My point is anything could have happend and to narrow things down to a few particular perspectives would limit my imagination.
I did see one version, where the villagers dont even know whats being built, they see it as a big barn thats been there for generations, as it took hundreds of years to build. If that was the case, the most people would say is, "Crazy man on the hill, isnt that barn big enough" .
I dont like getting caught up in silly details, unless I was working on a documentory or an image for someone else.
I hope I dont offend anyone. As I said earlier this is a Fictional interpretation.
Thanks for the C&C, I would love to get more!

Nice! That straight rope look way better, and it being about to snap is a nice touch ;).
Talking about tight, I think the rope that Noah is pulling should be straight too, also I think his right forearm (or the one left of the image) is a little thin in that view, and I know this is preliminary but maybe you could show more strength in Noah if you show more his tense tendons (like in his left forearm, the forearm tendons that are below the palm of the hand) and bulging muscles (yeah he's not a bodybuilder, but they don't have to be big to appear ripped, specially since he's pulling such a big beast ;))
Well, nice work and GL!

No need to be sorry, its not as bad as it seems. Its 7 days a week but only 4 hrs a day are labor. I help train race horses. I managed a chocolate factory and wharehouses and an electronic store in the past, and I dont want that kind of work. I regret majoring in business. Cuz I turn 30 this year and have a deep passion for CG. Fortunately I am in a position to quit. I mean, I am looking for an intern position in the Vancouver area(but willing to travel if living expenses were paid). So my Job is rather temp now. It feels pretty good. I do get some CG work, designing chocolate bars, I did a Safeway Chocolate Truffle Bag, Posters like one for the Fringe Festival, business cards, corporate logos, I am doing a music video(on my own time for a friend-just started). I end up doing a lot of advertisments. So I do get some work where I can use CG, but I dream of getting work in the film industry. I train everyday! And I am willing to work for free to learn more in a production environment. Thanks for your support

I thought I should also post the deer model. Since my animals are all background, I am able to get away with using the same base mesh. So... they have the same vertex order, which means Im going to have a fun time morphing from animal to animal! and blending from different textures! This will help my demo reel. Thanks

Hi. Ok, I was going to do two models today. I ran into a problem that took me a while to figure out. Basically, projection master would crash with even a small stroke. So I had to triangulate. And delete a mirror copy I some how created?? Any way, its only a background character.

Hey David,
Lots of progress here as I havent been on the challenge threads for quite a while. Great job on the animals:thumbsup:  . The foreground grass color and the middleground grass colors could be improved I think. Maybe lighten up the middleground grass and add some dark green to the foregroung grass, just a thought.

Thanks Soapy, I see you made another update on yours to :)
Now I need a game plan...
I know I need to tweek Noahs arms and hair, Work on my grass and greens, but most of all decide on the last model (maybe second to last)- I need to model what Noah is pulling, I think a mule? with its teeth out and its lips up, legs straight ahead? I also want to model a few peacocks dancing in the storm? Then I want some leaves and debris floating and flying around to help show the winds. Then perhaps, sneaking in a few godrays. And finally I get to bring it all together, perhaps by slightly shifting the hue on the whole image etc.
My only but uh what ifs... are a mule? Am I sure I want that. what else would be so stubborn, when all the other animals seem to be volunteers. I like options. Does anyone know other stubborn animals.... I like options. Perhaps a big Lhama or a rope around a rhinos horn.... oo ooo I kinda like that. Thanks guys

I hope you had a great weekend. For me I hiked Golden Ears, 1500-1700 metres. 10 feet of snow, very wet, but amazing visuals. I find hiking for a few days, getting away, is very inspiring.

http://forums.cgsociety.org/images/icons/icon10.gif Working on story

Background
While storming up ideas at the begining of this challenge, Noah's Ark, crossed my mind. I wasn't set on it, as most of my roots are ancient east indian. I researched a bit and found the story to be amazing. I was intrigued. There are many treasures in this story, for everyone. Some are burried deep, but they are there.

ok, now i've been looking here a lot, but never posted anything! sorry.
Could you give me a quick overview of the app you're using? I thought it was zbrush in the beginning but i'm not sure anymore :banghead:
You got so many models and animals, i wouldn't even have the courage to start this.
Also i saw the character in a 180degree rotation and it looks great. I was just wondering how many of those you can upload? I have 5 characters so either i should pick one, or i should do them all.
some suggestions : don't know how you fixed the textures, but how about making the arc somewhat dirty at the bottom. Like it's been lying in water waiting for the right moment or something else.
I also don't know what's going to happen to the lighting (cause i don't know what app you're using) but you could use some darker clouds in the back, and some more shadows to give it some drama.
Keep it up, we don't have long. I'll get back to it myself.
cheers

Part of my challenge was to make my image look like an old bible book painting. I received a lot of good feedback for this but also... bad bad Rasa. I think I would have been better off doing a traditional portrait. I do still want to master a painterly style, so you will prob see my next challenge looking similar. I really like feed back. Thanks
