The first idea:

A very strange couple of tourists taking that cliche, classic tourist photo posing for the "viewer" in the beginning of a journey to some very cool fantastic land filled with flying dragons, exploding volcanos, orcs and this kind of stuff.

This is the first very loose sketch.

U should make this one, humorous, put a danger sign, in or something, But it seems to be a great Idea!

Good Idea.
I am looking forward to see this come together.

How about frameing it more like an actual photo or polaroid? slightly off centerd and tilted. maybe even a scortch mark or two as if it were found after the fact.

paperclip: I agree with you about the arm, and for me the legs, hands and feet are odd too, but I'm just sketching the ideas in a very fast and loose drawing, none of figures, poses and anatomy is final, in my next step I will start to study the characters and use some friends of mine as models in photos sessions to get my references of poses, lighting, clothes, expressions, etc. but thanks for point it for me.

Pentagramma: Nice to see you here, Ale, thanks for the comment. Não é a Joy, mas é uma boa ideia, vou chama-la para posar para as fotos. Soube do trabalho do Narnia, como foi? Parabens.

What a bizarre concept!

It's probably a bit late to suggest this, but perhaps a more dramatic angle in terms of the picture to make the photo more "Extreme" ... then again, tripods being tripods, there's only so many ways you can set them up for a picture.

hmmmm

hmmmm

Sure, nothing is final yet, i will probably change the angle for a more lower angle, but trying to keep the "tourist style " photo.

In my future session of photo references with my models I 'll experiment some new angles for the composition of the scene.

I love how this is looking so far, and can't wait to see you flesh out more of the fantastic background. I also really like that you didn't make the couple contemporary but set them back a few decades. I too really like his moustache.

I have to confess I liked the layout more when it was just the image itself without being in a photo on a table. It feels less immediate. For me, it takes the painting away from being about "The Journey Begins," and more about "The Journey Began a while bag, but we only just got our film developed." But maybe that's just me.

Anyhow, can't wait to see you continue on this. Good luck!

Hi Walrus, nice to see you here, I'm great fan of your work.
Thanks for sharing your feelings about the layout. Im not completely sure about the "photo over table" against the full image, yet.

I will post both togheter and see the comments.

Thanks

03-03-2006, 08:21 PM
I like the latest update Eduardo. The photo on the table gives it context and some nice color. The only negative I see is that it no longer really feels like the beginning of a journey, but rather sometime afterwards.

Hi, this are my 2 layouts togheter for compare and my point of view about them.

Option 1:
Pros: 1 image to produce, larger details to see, a direct relation to the challenge theme.

Cons: a more regular aproach in therms of illustration.

Option 2:
Pros: More history behind the image and the theme, more things to look, interesting secondary elements like the map and the other photos under the main image, a color mood and lighting of the main scene plus the lighting and mood of the table top (map background).

Cons: more images to produce and put togheter in one composition, and indirect or less related aproach to the challenge theme.

What do you think about it?

Thanks for the comments,
Cheers :)

This makes a good point. I hadn't thought of it this way. On that basis... I vote for #2. But if you do #1, make the people fill the foreground a bit more. There's a lot of dead space.

Grande Shaal!

Great idea man, I definitely liked it a lot. Lots of character, a good solid story (or as we have seen here, a few good stories!), very illustrative in feel. Funny too! This will definitely be a very strong contender! :) Some people here think that there is a problem with the concept behind the second image. The first being their journey, and the second one someone else´s journey. Or, a journey within a journey! I like the embeded concept better, think that it makes for a more complex story, and opens up to a couple of diferent interpretations, which I think is good. The first one is more humorous, but also simpler, more straightforward. I agree that you´d probably have less work to do on it, and that you might gain more resolution in the image. But hey- they have plenty of resolution on those Ballistic books ;). Plus, you still have almost 3 months to keep at the little details! The second one is a richer image, and it´s my vote. Good luck, man!

Hi Eduardo,

I prefer the 1st option if you make a wide version of the image ... with a more open view of the background. This is personal, but I prefer be inside the image, and not just looking for .. (like I feel in the second version) ...

Bom vc vai ter uma decisão dificil pela frente .. boa sorte .. hehe

I like more the second image, but I feel the first is more appropriate. While the second image is much more an "after" the first one better portrays the "begins" part of the challenge.

Oh man,
a lot of comments, but I'm still in doubt about what layout to develop, besides this fact, I will have to produce the version one in full frame anyway and after that, if I choose to do the version 2 (table top), compose the final image with the map, compass and other illustrated "photos" background.

Thanks for your comments, again

Hi there

You know, it would have taken me days to work out a character sketch like that....

I have to go against the flow here, and vote for concept number one. Concept number two really does feel like an "end of journey" image. In order for it to be the "start" image, the journey couldn't be about the figures at all but, as others have noted, someone else beginning journey that somehow relates to the tourists. The second concept, as presented, doesn't really give any indication that there *is* someone else beginning a journey. Now perhaps if you had a pamphlet to one side titled "rescuing idiotic tourists" it would be clear that a new journey is about to begin!

I can't wait to see how this turns out

Hey Schaal! Very good work on the concept! I love this image, is simply hilarious! I look at this last concept of the tourist and I realy can´t put myself togheter to stop laughing!!! It´s realy very cool. I prefere the first sketch.... gives more acuracy in the aspect of beggining the journey, wich I think must be important to the chalenge! Best wishes and good luck on your entry! It must be in the finalists for shure!

i like this concept alot. Very original and is pretty funny and the characters are great. Out of the 2 concepts, i like no.1 better. no.2 is an interesting composition but if the scene is to be chocked full of dragons, orcs and other details, then it might get a bit confused. Top stuff so far though. Good luck.

Hi, I was very busy at Trattoria films in the last 2 weeks, directing two commercials in full 3d animation for an advertising agency :) , And my next week I will be very busy too doing concepts and art direction for another one, but Im still in the challenge, people! :scream:

domclubb: I agree with You, The scene should be very full of details and creatures, and the tourist stuff like the bike, bags, etc and for this reason the second layout probably will not work well.

Gus_clifton I didn`t see this movie you talk about But I found some pics in Google and my male character reminds something about the guy of the movie. Thanks for the comment.BTW Are you in the challenge? Abracos

JTD Thanks, man. One of my goals in image creation is the human figure. I love to draw and paint figures and facial expressions.

great i found u :scream: was busy with gettin a new machine so was away for a while, hehe, great to see u beem busy too :) very very nice character design, the man looks like my dad (which i found shocking where u met him?) and the girl is just candys on sivertablet, both compos work great, as for the optics, concept 2 is very pleasing and offers more aspects, but i agree with those who said stick with the topic. except its a boy who is goin on a trip to find his real parents and this is the only photo he has of them kinda story wich would work as well... whatever, subscribing for sure and all my bst wiches, hae fun, and have a great journey :)

hey real great idea i loved it:bounce:

i loved your 2.nd composition but there the journey has ended or continuing as some others say too.
and dont make an artistic composition leave it simple like you did (like a autoshot photo (sorry for weak translation i hope its undertandable) )

and tourists are perfect too
i think your going to be one of the winners
good luck :)

ah and i think it'll look great in pale photo colors (like old polaroids or first times of colored photos)

Really funny..I like the comedy in it and I think it would be much cooler if the background had more danger than what's in the sketches...and it would also be much much cooler if you added more symbolism that serves the concept. Then it would be perfect. :) looking forward to seeing where you're taking this..lovin' it. keep it up. (And by the way could you please come view my humble work..I could use your comments.) All the best.

Great to see this coming along! Big fan of your last one--great imagination and the technical ability to pull it off.

I'm way too late to offer this, but I almost think it would've been better to have the off-kilter "holding their own camera" look...since 90% of the pictures my wife and I have taken of each other on vacation have been from that angle.

Love your work.

I find the age gap hilarious. :scream: I also love the woman- she reminds me of someone I know...too-small bikini top and all. :)

Great skills you have...so nice seeing you wield them to the best!

Give us more!

Thanks to all for the last comments,
Im still very busy, but I'll try to get back to the challenge and start to develop the final image , in the next week.
I think I can finish this painting on time, we have 48 days yet and my Master and Servant piece took me 20 days to complete.

See you soon.

I see your dilemma. They are both good and original ideas.
Personnally, I would go with the first one. We get the fact that they are in a strange place. The map doesn' t add anything unless this entry can tell more of the story.

The door is open to interpretation of when does a journey begin.

We could debate if they are starting their journey or is this the end of it.
I am no judge but I feel that both of them raise that issue. At least with no.1 you have more room to add details hinting that this is not the end of the road.

Does that make sense?

Fantastic piece, man. The characters are great, the concept is great. No real crits, but it might be fun to play up the whole "Trompe L'oeil" (sp) aspect of the piece by including a few more real world objects around or on top of the snapshots, like maybe a keychain with some sort of small bit of memorabilia from the location attached to it.

Anyways, very nice stuff......

Wow Schaal,

It is getting so kool!
I am deep on the 3d short now, so not much time to get into the Challenge now.
Man, this guy on the picture looks a lot with Magnum, hehehe, but somehow he reminds me of Antropus *lol*. (he´s gonna prolly be mad with me now... hehehehe)
Funny concept to join a fantastic enviorment with a cliché photo. :)

Congratz! Boa sorte brother,
