View Full Version : PUULLLLLLL!!! animation test
wtoddk 03-01-2006, 04:11 PM So I'm doing a series of 'practice' animations, as some of you know....and, well, here's another one.
I have no idea where I'm going to go with this...no storyboard or anything...just animating as I go...kinda fun.
Any suggestions and critiques are more than welcome...\
the video is here. (http://toddkelley.com/htm/cg/pull/cg_pull.htm)

Cute animation Todd! Looks good already. Nothing really jumps out at me as unnacceptable, so these suggestions are all IMHO. Here we go:
In his jump, I think that his right leg is too high. I mean, on one frame, his foot is higher than his head! I think he should lead with his knee, and then plant his foot right at the end.
When he's yanking at the...the....(what the hell is that thing?), his head should be thrown further back, arms hyperextended (in this case, I think its appropriate), and I think his hips should be closer to the ring, creating sort of a straight line of action from his feet to his head. Im not sure If Im making sense there.
This one is the biggest one, at the end, when he looses his hold, his legs are at a REALLY unnatural and painful angle. Maybe slide that left leg down the wall, or make his legs both slip out and he could hang on with one or both hands.
Cant wait to see your 'punch line'.
This is just a suggestion, but these would be easier to crit if you included some frame numbers, so instead of describing the action, I could just say, "at frame 34" etc.
Nice work though, I like this one a lot.

looking pretty cool, i agree with adam about the leg at the end, looks like he's kinda doing the splits with one leg, apart from that i like it.

cool! funny already! ye animation is great, just depends how far you want to take it.. i guess its never done :) but ye i agree about the back braking hip twisting leg when he loses control but its an animation - doesnt have to be real... so its up to you if you want to change it... also, maybe when he pulls you can maybe further stress the pullllllllll by adding some jitter to his body...

Thanks for the crits guys. I agree that that left leg is all whacked out... I'm taking Adam's suggestion and am making the left leg fall too...so that he's hanging on by just the one hand. Error777, I'm saving the body quiver for the last pull before the punchline. Good suggestion.
Thanks again for the comments!!

finally had a few minutes to make some changes....
here they are... (http://toddkelley.com/htm/cg/pull/cg_pull.htm)
with timeframes just for you Adam!
now if I can just think of an ending.

looks cool, i would speed up the slip a bit so that gravity has more impact. maybe have his heels smack together when they hit the bottom. as for an ending you could have his arms stay grabing the ring and his body fly off... or something like that...or not... don't look at me with that tone of voice!

Drat! You´ve ruined my surprise ending Dalmanna! haha (not that it would be a shocker to have his arms pop off). I´m going to try to get the ending in tomorrow....check back then.
I was just thinking the same thing about the slip... the fall should be a little faster..like you said....
Thanks, Dalmanna. I can always count on you to be there with a comment! :applause:

Nice, you did the first pull just as I pictured it. Well done. I dont have many comments, really. It looks pretty good.
the second pull around frame 120, if you're going to do that pose, I think that you should have more curve in his back. The line of action in his back is kinda broken.
frames 80-104: right hand does a really exaggerated shift, and then the left hand does a really subtle shift. I think the left hand could be just as exaggerated. Anyway, I think they could balance out a bit.
frames 130-160: everything on his body drops when he slips off the cervix, but his right hand stays just about eye level the whole time, as if gravity had no effect on it. I think his whole body is a bit floaty during this part. He should really just succomb to gravity.
The whole part where he pulls himself up isn't working for me. I think I dont like that he does it all with his one left arm. I think that he should slap his right arm back up there, and then kick his legs to get momentum to get back up on the wall, slipping and scrambling all the way. Typing that out it sounds like a lot of work, but all Im saying is that the way he pulls his body back up doesn't seem like it takes enough effort
Now for an ending suggestion. How about he pulls and pulls and then gives up, letting his body fall to the floor and slump exhausted against the wall.
Wait a beat...
then the donut falls and lands around his neck.

heyhey...there you are Adam! Thanks for the critique
I've made a lot of changes, and added a finale. Make sure you have your speakers turned up when you watch it now.
I've added more 'gravity' to the slip/fall, but I still need to touch up the right arm, like you mentioned, Adam. You'll notice that now when he pulls himself up after the slip, the momentum begins with his right leg going up...I think it works a little better now.
anyway...let me know what you think
Thanks!

Ha ha! I love the music. (Claps from Heather. She loves it!) The little scoot up for the last pull is nice. The shakes look good too. I like how he flops back on the little ledge, though the ledge isn't really noticeable until he's on it. The ending where his head pops off is funny (and unexpected! ), but I think there needs to be something inbetween looking at his stumps, and head popping off. Like a big sigh, or a *gasp* take, I dont know.

HAHA!! Thanks! Glad you both like it.
Thanks for the suggestions...I'm going to let it rest for a few days...maybe I can polish off the Back To TF animation. Then maybe I'll come back to add something more to the ending of this one.

nice, thats wicked. i agree with what adam said about the head popping off. shame he doesn't have any eyes like the back to the future one coz you could stick a double blink at the camera in that bit and then pop it off...well you could...oh dear, i sound like my tutors...send in the hit man:D
anyway good job i really like this.
