ok....im going to go with the lake one...
dudes travelling partner has died and now hes got to go it alone...there will be a body or grave in the shot...dunno which yet...

maybe even a pyre or something...maybe like there hase baan a battle...

still got a lot of playing around to do...

ok....im really going to go with this one...

this is the last concept sketch..

ill do a very quick line art then im going to
jump straight into the colouring stages...

what do people think of the trees? is it a good idea?

also should i have the litle boat loaded up like hes prepared...or empty like hes just going out to die?....

anyways....some crits and ideas from here on in would be more than welcome..\

those who know me know that im not a big fan of line work...im pore of a tonal painter...

so here is my line work...
its really just a paint over of the final concept..but i wanted to put the effort in for all the stages...

now the real fun begins...

the distant shore is maybe too intimidating at the moment. It's like a wall which you can't go over. It's blocking the way to the journey.. you want to make a gap to it so that he can go on his journey through it. Also it looks like he murdered his mate as the body is just left behind unceremonially like that. Just some thoughts.

Seems pretty nice dude! If u are going for the emptiness kinda feel its a go! It maybe is a little too early for me to judge at this stage, It may end up being successful, keep it coming!

ok im thinking a little maze like this....the will be a guy or group of people at the enterence about to go in...

i think i will set it in the center of a vally and make it nice and dark...dunno if i should make the maze stone or a hedge at this stage....will have to see how it flows...

Hmm nice idea! I was thinking around the material for the walls, and i think if it was ice it could be more dramatic!

I liked the last but one better. The compositions was way better and the perspective looked more like "the begin" of this journey and was way more dramatic.
Also its a bit of a more naiv way of drawing to give the "great labyrinth" most of the space on canvas; don't have to. And the overview doesn't make it really look as dramatic, because it reveals too much. The lower angel makes it looking "endless" without showing more as needed.

PS: Reminds me of one MattePainting from "the Riddick" Dylan Cole did.

This last sketch is very good, nice perspective.

Maybe there's a castle to be seen way back in the distance, where the fella should go to.
There must be a goal (something) to go to I guess. There also could be some sort of crowd cheering for the participant taking this Journey, standing on the hillside on the right..

I like this a lot!

MichaelMotion: thanks! i was thinking that a didnt want to do a normal goal for the guy to get to...loke a tower/castle...i was thinking more along the lines of a nice green landscape maybe...something away from all the dark and gloom...
or maybe even no goal...and endless and fruitless maze...almost like a frustrating dream....ill play with all the ideas...including yours...thanks!!

i was thinking that Ill put the little guy in soon...hes going to have an old school lamp...a nice orange glow spreading into the floor aroung the ground and walls where hes walking...just a little...mmm this is comming out fun :)

just a very quick preview check to see how im going to put in the guy....personally i really dont like it with him as it is...maybe too big..?

i think that he should be quite small..maybe the maze can dominate...

I'm okay with him this size, though it's not clear whether he's a grown man or a boy. More work on the figure will easily cure my confusion.

One idea might be to have him pointing the torch down the corridor, illuminating it... and compositionally serving as an arrow into the maze...

I really like what you have so far, but I think the figure would look better if it were smaller. The maze doesn't look so hopeless now, and with him that size it almost looks as if he could kick off the walls all kung-fu or Mario style and get up to the top of the maze and complete it the easy way. :)

...Setting a labyrinth in the middle of mountains seems a bit paradoxal... as it gives reference in space helping anyone going in there to find his way back to the start or even through it with a bit of trial and error... Feels wrong to me, I'd skip the mountains cause of that.

binksterb: i get what ya mean..its been in the back of my mind the whole time...but ive also been thinking that i want the maze to dominate alot more than anything else...i really want it more of a surreal landscape rather than a figure/portrait painting like others..

i have always been thinking that even at the start of the maze it should seem very dark big and evil...that includes very tall walls :)

Adriano_Zanetti: i can see what ya mean but also if there is a sun or stars couldnt you do the same thing? last time i was in a hedge maze i remembered feeling very lost very quickly even though there were buildings all around me...lol...also if i was making a maze like this i would be very sure to use those reference points to trick people...always think ya know where ya going then BAM!! dead end...lol jsut like real life :)
but all that said..ill look at doing something aside from the mountains... :)

after all the comments about the guy i thought that i should fix him up so it looks a little more how i imagined it...

so now here it is...

again its still got a ways to go but i think its comming together alot more...


next i think ill work on the made and give it a bit of texter, roughness and generally make it look alot more realistic than it does at this stage..

im thinking really old crumbled stone/ brick would be cool...

That is bound to happen at some point. I agree with Simon, the ideas/concepts are different enough that I don't think either of you should worry about it.

ive sorta very quickly tried an idea for the walls of the maze...just old crumbly rock...lol

ive just started the tops of the walls...its just a test...it will need alot more texture and bump but i think its a start....

i really like the little hole...lol

im thinking that the walls bould be alot more alod and bumpy...

I like the way this is going. The texturing is going to be a lot of work, but if I know you I have total faith you can pull it off. ^_^

Two things.

1) Part of the contest is the instilling of an emotion related to the character. I don't know how the judges'll react if the character is small and his/her face is difficult to see. I suppose this part could still be fulfilled if the image itself evokes enough emotion. Perhaps the maze could be the character.

1) There's no goal in this image. Why is he entering the maze? It should be readily apparent. Could be something as simple as a glow at center, far off in the distance. I, however, vote for a pillar of fire.

Because, you know, there's nothing exploding in this image, and explosions are the difference between good art and great art. Just look at the Mona Lisa!

this may sound like a very silly responce... but better now than later.

ok, here goes... have you given any thought to the design of the maze itself? The maze you've got looks great and it does make sense. It's just that most of the passeges are pretty direct to go somewhere. there aren't a lot of visible dead ends and so forth.

anyway, this is a personal taste thing. i tend to get really picky about stuff like that and most people would just see a maze. i'm envious of the concept you have here. hope you're having fun.

Im very like the idea with maze. Hope later you make the maze more "asymmetrical" and more "alive". Some kind of trees maybe,cities, or something like that.

well everybody was saying that the guy was lacking a goal...

well heres a little idea that i have had in the back of my head for a while..

i dont know but...i sorta liked that before he had no visable goal..it sorta spoils the fun from being an evil endless trip into nothingness...death.

anyway its just an idea...what ya'll think?

@ 1) hehe...well everybody is doing really figure driven images so i say ill do 100% the other direction...lol making him small and a little distant was supposed to push him away from the viewer...hes already lost...you cant help him man..its gone beyond that now...theres only one way for that dark little figure and thats through the even darker maze..

@ 2) how about blue fire ?? lol....and yeah i agree its just never much fun if you cant set at least something of fire....

anzibon: i agree...expect to see more dead ends in the next few updates :) thanks for the tip...you opened my eyes :)

bandro: probably will do a combination of the two...one leading to the other...Cheers :)

Mex: shall do...probably not the city part but there will be moss and vines and all that kind of stuff that goes with it :)

I thought the piece had more mystery and interest when you had no idea where he was going, and he was just shining a light off into the darkness. And I've seen the line straight up into the clouds (a la 'Tron') in other entries here already. So I liked the previous rev more myself. And as Michael Chang pointed out when I asked about his entry, Why does a journey have to have a specific goal? In any case, the previous version DID have a goal - the end of the maze... but who know's what's there or why? I liked that about it! :)

First of all, I'm totally digging this concept. Just looking at the maze makes my brain hurt - in a good way!

I like the maze without the "goal" of the pyramid, but... I also like the idea of the pyramid as well. If you keep the pyramid I'd

a) make it smaller because it's so big, you've lost a lot of that look of infinite distance - push it way back so that the journey still seems like an impossibility

b) I like the big blue laser beam, but if you keep it, it might be cool to have the glowing light in his hand the same blue color - as though it is a talisman that is drawing him to the heart of the maze, ie: the pyramid.

Just some thoughts. It's amazing. Can't wait to follow the rest of your progress. :D

Hey, I like this goal. The blue fire is cool. (Blue fire's hotter than orange anyway.) Right now the pyramid looks like it's floating on the maze-- hope to see a maze opening in there so that the bottom of the pyramid can disappear into the inky black depths of hell.

... or something. ^_^;

Well, i liked the previous version without pyramid and blue light more (well, maybe the pyramid could fit in.. but let go of the blue light)
i pondered some days if it wouldn't be nice to have some apocalyptic flare at the horizon.. maybe a sunrise, maybe the flames of hell..
just some mighty orange flames to balance the lightning in this picture

Very original idea, and I like you'r maze. :) I don't know if it's the meaning, but you'r colors seem very low saturated (almost grey). Keep it up! :thumbsup:

im quite happy with the way its progressing...no major dramas so far......hehe

lighting is important in this one so im going to be paying alot of notice to that donw the line....

You are making a good stab at this idea. The maze is looking fantastic. I have a problem with the 'character'... Don't get me wrong - he looks great and is probably about the right size in relation to the maze, but the reason he would work so well as an editorial illustration, is that he is so generic.

I don't believe you have to have an expressive close-up to describe character or motivation, but at the moment your idea is fuelled by a desire to visually describe the maze rather than a convincing backstory.

Perhaps you need the character to be more actively DOING something in preparation for their journey in order to give the mood of the piece more depth. (personally if i was in their shoes I'd be hefting a massive sack of pebbles, or better still - fixing one end of the biggest ball of wool in the world to something sturdy)

Maybe the addition of more characters - with the possibility of conflict would make it easier to add motive to the piece.

Ooh, Shazam!!

Thats looking pretty damn good. I love the textures on the stone walls, you can almost feel the cold, grtty srface of the stone. I do though tend to agree wth the last statement, that the character needs more of a reason to be there. He's obviousily not a warior going to destroy the Minatour. But f he s a smart man he'd either have attached a length of string to fnd hs way back, or be holding one hand on a side of the wall. Because if you always keep one hand on the side of a wall in a maze you can always make your way through. On other thoughts though, he doesn't look like he's moving at all, more examining the entrance, you might just want to put some footprints leading into the labyrinth. And if he is just assesing the situation, you could also have him holding the light up, neck down, squinting into the dark. Just some thought vomiting your way.

Your concept is one of my favorites in this contest so far. The task the guy is going to take is really an epic one. the maze is great, and the texture is so good. the scale is huge, and the way you show it is really cool
I kinda agree with the last statement, maybe you should think some reason to him to be there. But on the other side, a guy standing in front of a maze, is going to cross it thats for sure, so dont know maybe you should show something on the end of the maze.
But i truly like this one. Im following for sure :)

On the character:

I think how all this will work int depends on where you put the focus. Like you said everyone else is doing these huge closeups of characters and stuff and you're not. I think that the guy can be low-key and moderately generic, but only if the maze becomes the character and is filled with enough eye-catching malice or embarrassment ninjas. You could make it a metaphor on life, and make your character the every-person. As long as he doesn't have a sign that says "n00b" over his head.

On the texturing: it does look excellent. One thing that seems a bit off is the base of the frontmost walls -- it's too light. Even with his lamp shining on it because that place is where two angles meet the light is going to be a little different. A light gradient to make the top fade down to a dark bottom -- just a tad, mind -- could make the separation between wall and ground more apparent.

One other thing that itches a bit is that the only color in the scene thus far comes from the man and the lamp. If this is a conscious choice (which could be interesting, theme-wise), then it needs to be more apparent. Maybe even the walls themselves around the character get more color. If it's not conscious I think there should be some more color throughout the image, something to juxtapose elements.

I had a dream last night about a huge green pillar of fire... it was tasty! Keep going!

Man, amazing image,remembers me the Harry Potter last film. I prefer you first aproach, with the sunlight trought the clouds, marking the goal of guys journey, its needs a perceptive look to see it in a first glimpse, i did it, but in a second look it is very clear and it brings the sensation of a "discover" (for observer who didnt see it in the first look). Much more atractive and subjective than the pyramid with the light beam., in my opinion off course...;).

I notice something that the textures are prett huge and consistant going towards that back! I think u may want to shrink them as they go back or make them disappear. Do u plan on adding fog in this as well? But, overall this is looking very nice!:thumbsup:

Fantastic work with the maze! It looks rally menacing... the textures you apply gives a sense of realism that makes it top level. I think though as smoeone suggested before that the illumination coming from the character should be somewhat improved and the standing man defined a bit more, but nevertheless there's still a lot of time ahead, that maybe could be your intention in time... Apart from that, your work is becoming freaking awesome man.

personally i wouldnt add anything to this. A goal or "end point" may be too obvious. I like the simplicity of it. All the attention is drawn to the maze it's self, and being seemingly endless adds alot to the atmosphere. It's cold, harsh and lonely. I love the scale of the maze too. It makes me feel sorry for the character. Keep up the good work.

you are the second man i found here with a similar way of thinking to myself.
when i first saw it i thought how couldnt i think of this "a labyrinht". ı always like the idea of it.

and about the picture the last angle is perfect lightning is perfect but just an idea: try a darker foggy blurry ambient on the background just to see how it looks it may give more hopelessness to scene (it may not too :P ) but this way it looks like he's trying to go to light and it looks just fine.

woring on a little more of the texture and also trying to make the middle ground a little less "straight"...roughing up the edges and playing with the colours....moved the sky in a little to make it feel tighter....im liking it now.. :) ive still to add more "interesting" detail....lol

hi all :0

my computer has crack the sads...im currently writing this in safe mode windows....lol
just backing up all my important files...which there is alot of...then im going to reinstall windows...it sucks because i always forget something and it gets lost forever...

anyway...once the computers back up ill be back in action...should be 1 or two hours to get it all together and install all the drivers for my fun toys :)

anyway...if all goes well the challange should vontinue for me :)
if not...mmm....well everthing is backed up so it should be ok no matter what :)

I admire your patience with all that stonework and I love the texture of the whole thing, especially those old vine looking thinga on the foemost wall next to the figure. The lighting seems very regular at the moment, is that something you'll be working more on at a later date? With the darkness of the clouds, the walls seem to be more luminescent than the sky...

And perhaps adding some weird gargoyle-esque figures atop some of the cornerstones of the maze walls would help break up the repetion too... if you wanted to get really fiddly, you could have them representational of the stages of his journey, whatever it may be.

Great work this far though, can't wait to see how it develops

just stoping by to say its a great process :) waiting for those clouds to be done and messy... applying a texture similar to that one on the ground would really give a nice touch to a whole piece. not that it would be superrealistic that way, but the style will be very similar to the traditional painting one. keep up the great work!

only, one problem i see and im sure you feel it too but i must say it (its hardly recognizable) : on the middle part on some areas between the walls it feels like they are filled areas like they have same height with the walls and needs some change in the shadows but as i say its hardly seen and picture is going great.:thumbsup:

the symbolisim is very strong and indeed your image looks fantastic and is a great idea but for some reason the reminds me very much of harry potter and the goblet of fire you do see a vast maze scape like this same colour tone and everything just thought i would let you know that it does look very similar to a scene in that movie. i strongly support the use of curves in the maze definately will make the maze more interesting and lead your eye into the picture more. and just a sugestion how about doing it at first morning light? dont have to have a sun but the first light could lend more symbolisim to "beginings". to me darkness or darker grey tones and images set at night often refer to an "ending" black also being long accociated with death which is also an ending of sorts. but thats just an obsevation.

IVE REWORKED THE PERSPECTIVE ERRORS EVEN THOUGH NOBODY PICKED UP ON THEM....IVE ALSO FLATTENED ALL MY LAYERS SO NOW ILL BE DOING THE FINEAL SET UP THE I CAN GO INTO THE FINAL COLOUR STAGES...

If I were you, I'd make this fog look more saturated towards blue tones.. It doesn't work as desaturated as it is.

Hmm... color, or contrast. One of the two-- something to make it come out.

It's really coming along. Something I'm noticing, though-- the horizon feels wrong. The perspective on the clouds, if you could say they really have perspective, is off. They're tilted upwards, somehow... I think that having a more visible horizon, one where you can see a bit of darkness to separate more fully the sky from the earth, could help with this.

Awesome work so far dude. Still wondering what the payoff is for getting thru the maze though.. haha. I do agree with kattkieru about the cloud being a little odd. I'm not quite sure how to fix it though.. maybe less contrast as it goes further.. other than that.. awesom work

I think the cloud might be looking a little too soft/fuzzy at some areas compared to the rest of the picture.

Very powerfull scene. Though, the character is not as powerful as the background. maybe he can look backwards searching for someone who is chasing him? There's no apparent reason for him to enter this maze. Yet it could be my lack of imagination...

vines are great idea and well done, picture needs more vines and maybe you can put some more life feeling in some places of the maze maybe a dim light coming from a far corridor of the maze i dont know if it'll be good but just an idea.

Srulo: thanks for the comments. from the start i didnt want this picture to be as character driven as all the other enteries..i wanted the maze to be the main focus by far...soem people have liked this others havnt....lol....but the guy will be 100% repainted by the end, i dont think ill have him looking to the veiwer tho...he is alone...he cant get help from us....lol...and as for the reason....why did the chicken cross the road...?? to get to the other side....if indeed there is another side to be gotten to...

individium: ou get two replies beacuse you posted while i was typing...yeah i like the vines too...but again i dont want TOO much
LIFE in there...although there may be other things around to look at, like a skull of a dead tree, a spider web,,,even some little rats if i have time...just have to wait and see...i think the concept of the picture is ok but now i juts have to make it a little more visually interesting...

On the new sky: yes, yes, YES OH YES! Give me more of that sw33t lovin', baybee. It totally opens up the picture, makes it feel more inviting, and you've completely solved the "odd perspective" problem.

On the vines: loving them, but they're going to be a metric ass-tonne of work. Good luck there.

On the composition: Something else I've been considering is that there's no starting point for the eye when I look at this piece from a distance. I'm wondering: have you thought about viewer eye movement yet, or is that something for a later date?

I'm also looking at the bit of light coming down from the clouds in the background. Might be nice if that lit the top of that mountain next to it.

I can't deny this is quality work, but like others I don't see any reason for this person to be entering the maze. There also doesn't seem to be much happening above the horizon- is this is deliberate? Perhaps it's space for a title line?

added some better mountains...need to move them a little and also fade them out a little to better fit the depth but i think i made some good progress tonight after a slump of not doing so much for the last two weeks...

next will probably be the little mountain/hill on the right hand side..then i want to add some more details and interesting objects before the final colouring phase begins :)

Wow. This just keeps getting better. I like the touch of gold up in the clouds to subtly tie the sky in with the gold glow in his hand, and those vines! Looking forward to seeing what you do with that last mountain shape. :)

Fantastic scale! I have to say, as far as "the journey begins" theme goes, this is an excellent way to portray it.

I like the perspective trick w/ the maze. Good call!

In a not-so-criticism way, the mountain closer to the foreground definitely needs to blend into the maze better--but it seems like you just haven't gotten to that point. I'll just keep my mouth such!

Can't wait to see the finished product!

I like the sky, it reminds me of Conemara in the West of Ireland, really depressing when its raining.
The brief says the characters expression or emotions are important. Srulo's comment may help but I have no other ideas.

It's a great picture with massive scale.

ill be working on the intergration of the little mountain/hill on the right hand side next. i hadnt really spent any time on that corner at all as of yet...thats why it looks very out of place...

Man, amazing image, the walls texture “rocks”..:buttrock: . The perspective too, very difficulty to execute this with the labyrynt walls so complex. And there is no repetition in they´re design pattern, excellent! The atmosphere that you pass in the image is claustrophobic, man I don’t want to be that guy over there..hehe. You will work the sky? I think clouds could have more movement impression, maybe. I will keep looking constantly!

The texture of the wall of the labyrinth is extraordinary and the light excellente. Clouds are very returned well. A single criticism, I find that the connection enters the mountain to the right and the labyrinth is too frank, but can be is it because this part( does not still have was refined

As said before, i realy love this painting :thumbsup: . Only have one advice - as you have detailed the maze so much, the guy entering it doesn't pop-out of the texture. I suggest adding more contrast and incerase power of that lamp he's holding.

ive come to a point where i need to really decide what to do with the right hand side of the image...the hill thing...

so i put it to a 24hr vote...
which one do you like more...
the maze everywhere or the cliff on the right...

both of them were just quick fill ins so what ever one i pick ill work it back up to better quality again...

while i wait for a reply i might work on the guy and the foreground a little more today...

oh and what did you think of the little grass additions??

anyway i would really love some help to choose which way to go...

I like the mountain in the picture on the right. It breaks up the scene a bit, which is nice. It seems though like the maze just intersects with the mountain. It feels as though maybe the maze could look a little more like it's wrapping around the path of the mountain, rerouting itself to not bump into the cliffs on the right instead of just intersecting with them. Does that make any sense? If not, don't worry about it, it's such a small area and not really clear to read, it could be that you already renderred it that way and I can see it well at this res. Anyhow, good work so far!

The mountain is just to heavy in mass for the composition and having it there leaves me with the impression that i can possibly get around the labrynth. I think I'd go with the mountain too if there's something on the left or further in the distance to balanace the image out. If it's just the mountain then the image will be "heavy" on the right side.

Then again, that could be the look you're going for.

it may appear like the big stone helps with the composition, but also it makes the puzzle area smaller, so you sacrifice the sense of complexity and the viewer lose some atention, keep the non-stone.

no mountain for me. The composition doesnt need it. The maze is epic and daunting and to me has more impact on its own. I just love the simplicity. It's very thought provoking. If this was a poster, it would be on my wall. I love it.

Im also for the one in the left. The mountain brings too much attention without any reason. there is nothing that this element would help explain the story.. its just a disturbing element in the pic.

Hi Simon.. seems there's quite a split of opinion here! Both have their pros and cons. The left hand one does look much more expansive, like it goes on for ever, but the composition is simpler, with a series of intersecting straight lines. Without the mountain the feeling is lighter because you have more sky. However, the right one feels darker, more forboding. Also the line of the mountain leads the eye down to the figure, which starts the eye back into the picture again. Without that, it takes the eye a while to find the figure. The rock also brings elements of the background into the foreground, which seems to make the environment as a whole more cohesive. I do think Kattkieru had a good point with it being quite 'right heavy' though, if you do go with the mountain. Having gone through that myself I don't know which to go for... *ponders* I think my gut instinct said right hand picture with the mountain, so I'll stick with that.

Vastly prefer the image on the left...if you were photographing this scene wouldn't you move the camea a bit to the left to cut out the mountain -- or, photograph the mountain entirely itself? I don't know...either one is fantastic, very engaging, but I love the sense of depth in the left hand image.

Personally I like the mountain, it makes it seem a bit more realistic. The maze isn't perfect. Maybe you could put a stair case carved out of the mountain and a bit more of the Labyrinth up there too. It might be where the maze leads...it may not. Anyway, in the end it's your decision so get on with it, I want to see more. It's coming along wickedly.

so i put the decision to a vote and it came to

well here is the mountain blended in a little...

i still ahve alot of work to do...fixing up and blending up the the textures.

and still got some more details to add....a dog skeleton in the foreground...some rocks and litter...thats sort of stuff...

i have repainted the man and put in alot of extra detail that you cant really see at this res.

also playing with the idea of grass a little more and a little better than before...

ive thought of an idea to fix the unbalance of the mountain on the right of the picture...it has to do with some subtle cropping wich actually works a treat...ill save that fr one of my final updates...

still 12 days to go and also alot of details of the painting...

also recently ive fixed up most of the maze so it looks alot cleaner...also you cant see that in this image...

anyway...

more painting time...

looks very cool so far. i like the warm area in the foreground. perhaps you could cool the labyrinth in the distance a bit down and add some fog, to enhance atmospheric perspective?

About one third from above are two areas that are too dark compared to the areas that are closer to the viewer. Hope that makes sense.

One thing: the horizon mountains fade off and leave that block of space open on the left; it's a little distracting. Other than that, after all you've said (and the late-night talks I've been having with the ninja cabal what spies on your bedroom), I think you're nailing what you set out to accomplish.

Rooma: OMG such kind words...thanks soooo much!! its been a struggle at a few stages but im happy with the results myself so thats the main thing...im glad you like it simple...at the start everyone was saying that may be a bad road to go down but im glad i stuck with it and went for the harder image,,,thanks again!

Hoju: thanks! i want to go in the maze too!! but i think if you went in there would be a damn good chance of never comming out again...lol...the questions are my presents to the viewer to say "hey thanks for looking" :) as for the judges...mmmm...dunno if it has enough hot chick value...(just kidding)...lol...

I had an idea at the beginning of the Contests. I make a Labyrint. And then I searve all the treads. And see there, you had the idea before me. And now I am glad, which you converted this idea. Because I would have that never as well get as you. I am overwhelmed. Much luck.

The Journey Begins...


First off I just want to say thank you to all that have made any kind of input for this image...Basically if you have made ANY type of suggestion at all then I have tried it even if you didnt get to see it painted...even the more wilder of the suggestions were at least given a quick go...

I'm more going to write more a "background" about the image rather than a story...and by the end i hope you can see why..

First off when I started this challange I wanted to go for something a little dark...something that could lead to death, although I didnt want death represented in the picture in a "hey this person is going to die in the next few seconds via a big monster" kind of death...

I wanted it a little more subtle than that...something a little darker even...maybe more terrible in the end..

Another underlying thought that i've had for the image is that the person is 100% alone...even quite distanced from the viewer..he has no idea that we are watching...no wave good-bye and he goes of on his little trip. He is miles away from any other living creature...(maybe)...and that could be the way that it will end. But then again he could reach his goal, a goal that is so far off, so at the edge of his dreams reach that we are not allowed (by some neat trick of the artist or camera) to even see what it is. his Journey will leave the viewer behind quickly.

Basically this painting is a reaction to all the cute, happy, sexy, fluffy images that we see around us every day...I dont know why in such a strange and lonely world we are drawn to paint such easy and happy topics..escape(ism) in most case maybe, or perhaps a kind of shutting out of the real world around us...who knows? of course I do it quite alot...lol

So, in the end I suppose my image is about the real world..an image of the way I see the lives af all around me...you can make what you like of that..hehe

One last and final thought I have to say on this painting is that i think (as so many others have said) that it raises alot more questions than is answers.
who is he?
where is he?
why is he there?
how did he get there? (no supplies??)
where is he going?
is there a goal?
will he survive?
...the list goes on...

My very last thought is about these questions...

If we, as the viewer, are given all the answers on a nice neat little plate, where then is the fun of the Journey of art? this is not my intention to be lazy or make a simple picture (actually i think its alot harder than shoving a story right under the viewers nose..) what i have wanted to say in this image is "its up to YOU...THIS IS YOUR JOURNEY! please make of it what you will"

Awesome work man. I agree with your thoughts on telling a story...I think stories taint an image too much and that the viewer should be left to just feel the story in the painting itself. (with the exception--of course--of artists like Linda Bjerkvist [am I spelling that right] who are both talented writers and artists).

Excellent background, excellent picture...I feel a journey beginning when I see it.
