Low poly is around 2400 tris, this is my first attempt at using Zbrush for creating normal maps.

love the scale detials and the variation between them. nice design aswell. have you used , or will you use the occlusion map thingy in zbrush to create the base for a colour map(and posibly a spec). would look super! havent used it yet, but i think if the base app dosnt do it theyve got a free download at theyre site.

top quality

Yep, the occlusion map function works beautifully and will be incorporated. Coming from a tradition of low poly modeling I am blown away by the control Zbrush offers.

I wonder how to go about rendering normal maps within Maya... I know there's a thread or two on here, I'll have to dig around and find out. Any tips would be appreciated!

ive always used max to create my noraml maps, importing from zbrush, is zbrushes mapper fast, cos a 1mill mesh normally crushes my machine sometimes fatally, plus do you have to play around with the results, they look very clean, as maxes usually produces a few anomallys that need playing around with.

cant wait to see the coloured version,

My machine is an old piece of junk and the processing time is way faster in Z-brush, my experiences with z-mapper were actually a lot of fun, contrary to max's nm baking. You should really give it a shot.

I didn't make the mesh, but I threw a T-rex into Doom 3 last night as a demo: http://www.doom3world.org/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?t=14810

Your T-rex looks very cool in its caricature!

looks good pity its lost some of the finer detail. perhaps it will come through with the colour.

or another thing you can try, render them out at double rez, then sharpen area's needed and reduce, ive found that that somethimes works.... but thats with maxes normal mapping.

looks pretty good.

The only thing that realy bothers me at the moment is the teeth. There is no gum line what so ever. I think that will fix up alot of the face stuff.

true.
I think its cool!

the tail could use a little more oomph... it seems too stiff

yeah, I haven't posed him so his tail might look a lil stiff (also explains why his eyelid is almost closed). But he does have gums, they're just overlapped by the scaley lips. It may be the lighting in that render. Or do you mean I need to define where the teeth and the gums meet more?

Unfortunately because I was kind of rushing through this I didn't do a proper UV layout (just did the automatic one to see results quickly) and while the normal map looks ok in Zbrush it has seams everywhere. So... blarg.. on to properly unwrapping!

Violently cute. Looks like something from Conker's. Diffuse and spec maps should have a great effect on this. Hope you get the seams figured out. If not, you can always give him some clothes or techy bits to break up the seams, but I'm sure you'll get it.
