I got it! I have the inspiration! I'm thinking about that old movie named "Fantastic voyage" and its remake "Innerspace"; I'd like to make a sort of parody of that kind of movie, with a soldier,a micro-pilot, ready to begin a journey inside a human body, involved in a micro-surgeon mission. He's an hero, he's proud, he's ready to begin and to fly inside the body; but nobody told him that he will drive a "suppository-ship"... In these quick sketches you can see the first ideas of the environment (a surgery room) and the hero.

gaah! Great concept! I'm totally fond of innerbody scenes - and this has the potential to be a really fun scene, poor hero :D
You could also do a scene where he enters the bloodstream, shrinked as in the movie ... less fun, but also less disturbing for those easily upset. Good luck, will follow for sure

... then, I started to think about a mechanic tool that the surgeons will use to operate. I was thinking about nano-technologies and so i changed the main character with something built with this kind of technology, a sort of "switzerland-knife" micro-robot.

Hi there Marco, great idea for your entry. The concepts that you have done already give a good view into this type of travel. I really liked "Innerspace" in the 80's so I will be looking forward to seeing where this journey goes. Best of luck to you on the challenge.

Sad to see your first hero came to an "unpleasant end"! But I really like the idea of the heroic nanobot. Surgical instruments have such an intimidating aspect it's nice to see one standing, ready to serve!

Thanks Glenn! I agree with you about the feeling of the nanobot, but I don't know if make him more "human" and I'm "fighting" with myself about his head. I don't know if he will have an anthropomorhic aspect or not.

i have started to model the main character. Gunilla gave me a very good advice (about a nanobot half mechanic and half organic), but I think I'll make it all mechanic, to emphasize the gap of the background(the humans)with the foreground (the "tools").

I have just modeled the microscope and the pill in the backgruond. This is the idea: the nanobot is going to enter in the pill using it as a "rocket-ship", ready to start his trip inside the human body.

03-10-2006, 01:50 PM
Love your bot! He does look very clean and sleek - for some reason i can really imagine him when i go to the dentist! Only crit is that -if he were a nano-bot -he'd have to be even smaller in scale compared to the pill and microscope, i think. Perhaps if you used a fish-eye lens? But i think thats very easily resolved - and i love your idea and composition!
Stefan-Morrell
03-10-2006, 01:55 PM
he does look a bit large compared to the pill,I love the idea of the microscope looming above.
not sure if I'd want him lurking around my insides after seeing the attachments on his arms..

Hi fellows!
Selina42: Thanks selina! Infact I was thinking about a dentist that I know...I saw his studio months ago, and I was really impressed! It was so perfectly white, aseptic and so sleek. About size: you're right: Im having many problems with the nano-bot size and the relationship between it and the microscope. I hope to solve it soon! Thanks for the crits!
Stefan_Morrell: Hey, No fear! He's a great surgeon! And sooner or later this kind of toys will swim freely inside us! Thanks for the advice about the size!

I thought the pill would look more like a ship, or just have some gadgets.
Will it be just a transportation? Then when the robot get inside he will come out of the pill?
shakes
03-13-2006, 07:06 PM
I agree with Stefan about the pill size-at this angle you wouldn't instantly get it that he's goilg in there..maybe it should be open? looking tops though, and apart from the pill, the composition looks really good.
rasamaya
03-13-2006, 07:15 PM
ah now your stuck on your perspective too... Im starting today, with a goal, to have my perspective down! Looks great so-far, would love to see more. What sort of energy does your nano use... does he get in and out of the pill during the journey... ?? I like asking questions like this. I wish you luck!
Cheers
medunecer
03-14-2006, 01:26 AM
Hi mates! Thanks for your comments! The composition you saw is not the definitive; I have to resolve a lot of troubles and I'm working on a color concept that I hope to post tomorow. In the concept, I'm going to improve the idea of the pill, adding a door and a stair to get inside it.
Geteken: Thanks! I'm going to add some details on the nanobot soon!
rodrigoessinger: I think that I'll put a simply door on the pill, and...well, after all a pill is always a pill...I dont think I'll make it as a ship.
shakes: Your words guys make me think...I think the pill is quite disturbing in that angle...I was thinking to erase it...but first i'll try to change its place and to add a stair (as an airplane external stair), to underline the idea of "begin-a-journey".
rasamaya: Good questions! I think I'll add some details on the nanobot (as small wires, transistors and tiny hardware) to suggest the kind of energy used...yes, but...which is the energy used? Well, I don't know yet...I hope to find an idea soon!
Thanks for all your suggestions!

I think the sketches are definately geting there. Perhaps if you had the robot on the top step of the staircase, in mid process of getting into the pill ship that would resolve the problems of putting it in the background so that the focus is on both ship and robot? Your modelling is definately heading in the right direction too!

Hey Marco, I laughed when I read your storyline..the suppository!!! hahaha great...
Like others have mentioned I loved the hero idea....but the nanobot is good too...
and it is coming along very nicely. Great updates.
I do like the robot there, being the center of attention, not in the stairs..but give it a shot.

say medunecer,
i was thinking about the pill again
what if you put it between the character and that computer on the background. It doesn't even need to bee completely in picture.
It will be:
* smaller and catch a bit less attention than the character
* out of sight of the doktors
* better in sight of the spectators (us)
i guess thats what i would do :hmm:

smallone3d: Hi Cesar! thanks...but it was too much! A suppository! Really too much! Anyway, I'm very happy you found it funny! Thanks again!

these are from the instructions of this challenge:
"A guideline is 2657 pixels wide and/or 3636 high, 300 DPI (portrait), or 3636 pixels wide and/or 2657 pixels high, 300 DPI (landscape). Your image aspect ratio and layout will dictate the final resolution. These are given as guidelines. To be safe, render images that are larger than these specified. "
So anything above these are good.

I have just started the operating room...I'm having lot of troubles with lights, radiosity, resolution and so on... in this first test I have just one area light, just to see if I can simulate a sort of radiosity. But I think I'll leave the idea of reality.

Love the renders and sketches up to this point...just one thought...it may be too late to ask...but have you considered trying to make the idea behind the scene show through a little more? I mean you have this great concept...about the mission to "Innerspace" and while I see that the robot is tiny and there is a pill next to him...I'm still struggling with the rest of it....I don't know if this makes sense at all...but its like a photo that you see with a winding road on it, and the road goes off the edge of the paper....it makes me want to go down that road to see where it leads...maybe there is a way to incorporate that into the composition....such as having the subject behind him on a table, with his butt in the air or something....have fun with it...hope this helped.

yo marco, i forgot what app u use, or i ever asked or saw it :banghead:
since you're talking about radiocity i can asume you use max?
but wouldn't it be great to deform the background with a bit of a fisheye? Not too much, but just to give is a more realistic and interesting background view.
Also, you could do a simple rendering of the occulasion of the room without the reflection and use it in compositing to get a bit of depth in your shadows.
are you going to use radiocity with your characters?

mmbenya: Matt! Those doctors now are working in another hospital...and I think some other will be fired! Too many polygons!!!
thierry2005: Thierry, my friend: radiosity is driving me crazy! It's the same old story: realistic or not? I'm trying to choose; I'd like to find a style between the real world and the fake-puppets world...
Nothingness: Hey Nico! I use Lightwave 3D version 8.5 It's a great software, with a very good rendering engine. I'm using a camera with a 11.5mm objective to render the background that I'll compose in the final image with the characters and other stuff. I think to use the same image as a sort of HDRI to light the characters with radiosity. Or I hope to do so, since the final render dimensions will be 4000x3000.
Good night friends! Talk to you soon! And thanks again for your advices!

Dear friends, after a long. troubled night, I decided to eliminate the pill because it fills a big portion of the shot, without giving the shot the right feeling. I'm going to fill that space with the doctors: one of them will be next to the nanobot, maybe with a little clamp in his hand, in the action of taking the nanobot and to mahe him start his journey.

hey medunecer,
it's starting to look awsome mate. The doctor is looking sweet. I only got two remarks dear friend :argh:
but anyway, here they are: the peace hanging infront of his mouth: make sure there are some shadows, so it doesn't look too flat like the one render. A bit like the render with the cyan background would already be something.
Second: the eyes get alot of attention due to the hair and mouth thing. Maybe put a little more detail in the eyes. The focus of the character is on this part so you should pay the most attention to this part of the face! You could mix in some different colors like greay and green - while keeping the blue alive. See some closeups of irises to see how mych color there actually is.
cheers,
doing great.
I'm busy on texturing right now. What a pain in the a**

04-07-2006, 08:25 PM
thanks Nico; I'm going to fix all the troubles this night. I'm going to add glasses on his face (a special kind of glasses...) and some diffusion-bump on mask. The iris is my great trouble, in every character of mine. I saw the eyes of the characters of shakes and I think this is the right way to made great eyes. Thank for the useful advices!
Nothingness
04-07-2006, 08:34 PM
well, i did it an other way! Shakes made some great ones, but doing with a lot of layering. I found a great iris, maped it on a sphere from a certain angle, then rasterized it acording to the uv of the sphere. The i could easily ajust the texture to get a iris that was rather the same everywere. Then all you need to do is make some changes in color. And of course the white of the eye.
But there are so many ways.

Hi, again! I see yours is comming along well, I didnt read your thread again, but its the Nano bot journey right? Is that One giant scene or a comp? Looks good. Its nice to model a lab, great additions to the collection! I am having trouble seeing the swiss medical knife... but it looks as if your still adding detail. One more critique- It is a low resolution of your original, but I am having trouble feeling the depth, maybe its the reflection of the table, It doesnt seem to be right, also perhaps having a tool on the table and his hand resting on it? also reflecting? I dont know, but I am having trouble with the depth, Maybe give us a sample of the full resolution?
Ok, I am just jealous. ha ha, I am, your scene is coming together so well, I have so many things I havnt begun to model.

You still need to light your scene, don´t you? So, I will be very happy with clear medical light and lots of display lights and LED lights on your medical stuff. Also, you can add somethin like ray of light from microlens or something to point that nanobot is under your microscope ( I think that the real ones have something like spot light to underlight object of study )

medunecer, you're getting there alright!
Maybe you can give her green eyes! Just to calm down on the blue! You'd almost thing she's the sister of the doctor :p
and how about some wrinkles under the eyes to have a more real look. Remember: because the mouth is covered, all the attention of the character goes to the eyes! So keep good attention to it.

Nothingness:hey Nico! They're all brothers! I made them from the same base model to save time. I made a model called "surgeon_general"; then, from that first model, I made those three surgeons.
About the details: unfortunately all the human character will be in BG and the BG will be blurred because the DOF. So, I prefer to save time making the BG figures less detailed.

Ok: I'm entered in the final part of my journey. In this week I'll start the renderings. I'm testing render times, because this time I'm going to use radiosity, HDRI and all those stuff that make a computer a very very very slooow machine! milions of polys, high subdivision level, ray tracing, all in a 6000x5000 300dpi pixel. I agree with the others, I didn't spot the artifact until I studied it.
It would be quicker to PS it in post if it really bothers you ;)
It looks like it is being caused by the overal material though. Perhaps the shape of the blade is confusing it somehow.
Maybe a very slight bevel to the top edge would fix it?

I suppose technically the entire background would be blurred out because the camera would be macro zoomed on the little nanobot. It wouldn't be very interesting though and it would hide the beautiful work you did on the characters.
It is hard to tell if the blur is correct on small images. I think it is one of those things that either looks right or not on the full image.
All the tests are looking good though. It looks very smooth and natural looking.
