View Full Version : The Journey Begins Challenge (3D) Entry: Marco Fantechi
medunecer 04-30-2006, 09:20 PM Thanks John! I'm just having a meeting with Lara in the operating room...
Hey Eric! Thank you so much! You're right, hands have some little troubles, but in the final image she will have another pose with no hands in FG.

This is my first attempt to build the final image. I'm not very satisfied about it and I think I'll make some changes. What about it?

Auguroni Marco...

Have nothing, really nothing to crit :D love this crazy deep perspective and finally no hi-fi system in background, ha ha ha. O.K. I just found one thing to crit, he he he - kinda don´t like how tweezers visually touching the microscope on that tiny space, ha ha ha - that is the point.
KEEP IT UP!

Hey friends!
centurionit: Thanks Mauro! You're right, maybe I have to add more blur in the BG elements. I was thinking to add some monitors on the left and on the right of the composition to underline the concept of "journey". In the monitors I'll put a screen with some information about the journey of the nanobot (soon I'll post some screenshot). Thanks for supporting me my friend! Grazie!
Oweron: Bad news my fellow: hi-fi system is coming back! And now we'll have two hi-fi system in scene!!! I'll post a screenshot soon; please, tell me what you think. About the tweezers: you're right: I'm going to fix it now.

looking superb marco-maybe a bit more shadows and contrast in the medical team-they look a bit flat and saturated at the moment. The composition looks great to me, but I'd possibly think about getting rid of the guys hands (on the right)as they're fighting for attention a bit with the robot(particularly his right hand). The robot and microscope look perfect.
you got tons of time..it's going to be brilliant!

shakes: I agree with you; the whole image is too flat and without contrast. It was the first attempt. Now I'm finishing the last renderings. As soon as I compose all the images, I'll start some retouching. I'm going to fix the hands behind the nanobot too. Thanks for the useful advices!
melkao: Thanks my friend; I'm adding some details that will make the scene more clear or I hope so)...

Shakes might be right about the gloves. Love the color scheme though. analytical but not cold. The medical industry would love you - making al those pointy things seem somehow inviting.
Great job!

Dear fellows, These are two details of my nanobot that, due the resolution not so high (only 4500x3000), you willnot be able to see. In the image A you can see my logo as the logo of a research lab with its motto; in the image B you can see the number of my entry in this great challenge as the matriculation number of the nanobot.

Wonderful! Very creative Marco! Details like this really make a piece magical. Brilliant work.
(what does the Latin mean and why is one eye of your logo character closed? I like it...LOVE it, but, what's up with that eye? It's cool...definitely think its neat being closed.)

glenn23: Right my friend: I'm going to fix gloves today. Thanks for the words "analytical but not cold"! I like it!
oceanbluesky: Hey Eric! Thanks for your words! About the logo: well, the left eye is not closed...in this image is not easy to recognize; he has the bottom left eyelid a little bit up because he is a quite fool man...

Eric, the meaning of the latin motto should be something like "Luck helps who dares"...or I hope so...

Hiya Marco !!
Long time I didn't drop by here !!
Some really stunning progress , the composition works perfectly ... And I can see you're adding some micro details ... a great recipe !!
Maybe the reflection appears a bit strong from there ... but that's really a minor crit ...
Keep rockin' !

Dear fellows, as you can see I changed a little bit the comp, moving camera and actors. I was not satisfied of the first comp. Now I think it will work better. This is my base composition, with all the different layers (35!)in the same document. Size is 4500x3000. from this point, I'll start making some 2D triks to adjust the whole image...

...here you can see the main changes I'll make; in general, I have to balance contrast between FG and BG, adding blur, change position of some items and actors, and paint in PS to add some details on the figures. I have to fix the nanobot figure, the main character in the scene. I'd like to make him "come out" from the rest of the image.

In a hospital somewhere in the world, a team of surgeons is doing a hard job as usual: they're trying to save a life.
Sometimes this is a very hard job to doand this is one of those times. There was an explosion in town today. Many citizens were hit by splinters and fragments made by the bomb. The patient in this operating room is one of them. He has little pieces of metal inside and
it will be hard to take these fragments outside of his body. Patient critical, no time to waste. The surgeon team need help. We are in the future, in the near future, a time in which technology improves day by day, giving as results wonderful objects like the "Nano-bot" in the foreground. It's a useful "new generation's medical item" built by nanotechnology methods to aid humans to solve difficult challenges. The surgeons in the operating room are ready to insert the Nano-bot inside the patient's body; once inside, the Nano-bot will travel inside him in
search of the small but dangerous fragments to destroy. The team of surgeons will follow remotely the path of the Nano-bot, learning in the same time more informations about the inner structure of the human body. First stop of the Nano-bot will be the brain, second the heart and third the liver. In these organs there are the most dangerous fragments for the patient's life. The Nano-bot and the surgeon team have a hard task to accomplish. The nano-journey begins.

hey medunecer,
it took a while to post here, but i've been sick just when the challenge was over - too much stress? i wouldn't know - but your final looks great!

Nothingness: Hey Nico, sorry to hear that you had some healt problems (Im not so good these days too...) Well, about rendering: I made several rendering in different passes. The whole image is 4472x2976 @ 300 dpi (unfortunately not so big...)The first object I have rendered was the nanobot, with radiosity, raytraced shadows, reflections, refraction and transparency, HDRI. It took two days. I saved the rendered image as a .tga file (as you know this kind of file keeps the tansp channel). Then I made the rendering of the other objects, using the same method but in some cases without raytracing reflection, transp and refraction. In some renderings I didn't use radiosity. Then, I put all the renderings together in a PS doc and I started to make some 2D tricks.
Nothingness

2 dags?
that hurts. What kind of computer do you have? And which version of cinema 4d do you use?
My render was 5000 by 3654 and is about 3 major layers. The city, the middle part with walls and landscape and then the characters.
And i was already complaining when it took about an hour and a half to render only one layer. The characters layer takes most of the time because maya seems to have a problem with fur in a scene with lots of polys. Fur alone is rather quick. But 2 days? Damn that must have hurt.
ow jeah, i'm using maya on a quad. And most of the time is because of the big amount of 2k textures.

I made the renderings on a P4 512 Mb ram. it took too much time (2 days!) because I used radiosity, ray tracing and subdivision level @5, but just for the nanobot (the main character in FG) . For the other actors and objects rendering was faster (from three to five hours). I use Lightwave 3D 8.5, a very good software.
