so long, mate:D
03-10-2006, 01:57 PM
Hey Vahn - glad to see you joined :bounce:
Good luck and have fun with the challenge!
one idea i have is to show a group of riders leaving home. But i dont want to show the riders but focus on their mounts.
i'll sketch some more but i like the idea of not showing the riders ( only their feet or lower bodies will be visible)
main actors will be the mounts! after all they have an adventureous journey in front of them as well :D
03-12-2006, 06:43 PM
wow./ i really like this idea... very ahard to pull of perhaps without giving human like charcter to the beast of burden... good luc with this.. i will be watching
03-12-2006, 07:35 PM
welcome in challenge, thx for commenting on me.
LYour fisrt pic is a bit strange tought the composition, the angle of viewing.
anyway the right creature seems very cool!
can't wait more!
andy, pclip, poshspice, am7, sh@ke, DoInferno, calisto, noob, scoral, overchord : thx guys :D
WIL : yo bit hard maybe ... i'll play around with different styles..a comic like aproach might work well on their face ..dunno yet :)
neozoom: hehe thx m8 .. yeah its just a sketch to visualize the idea ... i have to really break my head over a good comp :arteest:
03-12-2006, 07:44 PM
Heey Vahn, i was waiting so much for your first sketch, but at least...
Its totally nice idea, you have really unique, and original characteres!
03-12-2006, 07:53 PM
Hey Vahn.. Nice to see you've started something! And its a nice idea too.. :) It makes for a very interesting point of view i think! You need to put alot of personality into the mounts, and make the riders dull and "soul-less"(probably what you've planed) :p.. Hope to see more soon! Later...
03-13-2006, 04:16 AM
I'm not surprised to see a good idea like this one from you !
I will come back to see your composition and may be other mount sketch, have a good week.
Haha! you'r ideas are so unique .. and .. yes KUORAZY! Love thoose mounts. Keep us updated.
03-14-2006, 09:56 AM
Hi Adrian, good sketch and cool original concept. It is dearing not to show the riders so good luck and I hope to see some great illustration unfolding in here!
See you man!
brutal monk : köszönöm :D ( how do you write that ? )
FroZZt: yo thats the idea...if i have to show more of a rider it will be like that .. or maybe better: hes turned away or wears some hood so you cant see any faces :)
DeeVad: merci ami :)
thierry: hehe thx .. i hope so too
03-14-2006, 04:01 PM
brutal monk : köszönöm :D ( how do you write that ? )
Hehe That was correct! :) what about the update?! ;)
no update till sunday sry
03-15-2006, 03:46 PM
No update 'till Sunday...sadness. Anyways, I like the concept. It looks challenging but has the potential to being awesome in the end... can't wait.
03-16-2006, 09:15 AM
meine deutch ist nicht so spektakularen, aber hajrá neked is!
like the concept and the animals on it, i wonder the final impression of the pic:bounce:
03-16-2006, 08:35 PM
hey adrian, nice concept with a good idea! i especially like the froggy thing on the right... very cool design...:) whats in the background? is it a townwall?
i'm looking forward to your further sketches, man!
have fun & good luck for your journey!
just scanned some doodles and colored them with the touchpad of my borrowed powerbook here ... uggh ill never do that again lol
( for the concept idea check the first sketch :) )
03-17-2006, 12:12 AM
EDIT*for the first sketch
COOL! i like that the frog type guy is looking up at his rider kind of like "are you kidding me?" the color pallete seems like a desert type environment so it makes sense an anphibian mount would be hesitant.
The donkey type mount seems to be emotionless though. Mabie he should be sadly looking back slightly, and in the distance there is a silouette of another donkey mount with its ears straight up like, "your leaving??"
anyway, cool concept. I like it. :)
just doodling around :)
03-17-2006, 10:44 AM
cool! cool! the character was very interesting in the last sketch.
03-17-2006, 10:49 AM
Haha, good one! Gives the word "Ochsenfrosch" an entirely new meaning.
Way to go, Vahn, looking good.
03-17-2006, 12:03 PM
Hello Vhan ,cool the toad
reminds me a little of the big toad in Naruto.
Good luky :)
03-17-2006, 12:11 PM
is that the frog from Naruto??
ans is that ball of hair naruto on top??
but really....its a beautiful sketch :)
hehe youre right he looks a bit like gama :D
cyberone: the hairball is meant as a hand and the grey blotches the rider lol :)
03-17-2006, 03:04 PM
Nice, sketch dude! good luck with ur entry dude! I will be waiting for ur progress!
03-17-2006, 03:56 PM
hi Vahn! That toad is a killing one.. very good that last post! I also think about the idea that its gread, focus more on the animals than the riders. very original. I also must say that when I first saw that last toad pic I though it has some sort of hat on it, which makes it a very interesting fairy character.. keep up the good work!
03-17-2006, 04:21 PM
Great sketched, Vahn, especially this last one. Fun idea for a mount, and a lot of bersonality to it. I also like the softer, almost watercolory feel to the colors, too: Very storybook-like. Keep it up!
03-18-2006, 02:47 AM
cute pet, lots of personality. nice mix between reptilic and amphibic features. keep on ogoin mate :)
03-18-2006, 05:39 PM
Yeah, bravo on the frog creature. It has a lot of personality... more... more sketches :wip:
So whats the final comp going to look like? :argh:
beelow: cheers
ninjaAssn: hehe thx ..mhhm a hat you say ? not a bad idea :D
walrus: hehe thx ... im not sure if i want the mounts that animal like .. ill have to experiment some more ( btw im playing sotc atm and its really really reat :) )
angel: ty
arc80: final comp ?! dream on m8 :P hehe be patient
will take a while with the update here .. im still waiting for my compter and i gotta finish shadow of the colossus first before i can go on here :D :D :D
Another mount sketch
03-23-2006, 06:02 PM
interresting twist, reminds me a froggyrat now, who would have thought vahn has a secret gen labour? cool new pet, keep em coming :D
ok i had an idea for a comp with some characters ... this goes away from my initial idea about the mounts but hmmm it starts to convince me slowly mhhm mhhm
03-23-2006, 09:34 PM
The new creature looks okay... but i'm still in favour of the frog. SO Bring back the frog, bring back the frog :P
I like their gestures, but the creature is just competing too much with the three human characters in terms of size and focal point... yes, yes, i know its just an idea... so dont mind me, hehe.
be back for more bro
hehe dont worry m8 .. its just an idea :)
maybe its just too competing for you because its the only thing with more detail and that draws your eye :p
if i would expand it to the right i could get the frog in there :D
03-23-2006, 10:14 PM
They are being in an unnatural "fashion pose". I'm feeling bad 'cause the low and short view, the center is crowded. Should more scope.
shield youre right ... i can either get rid of the left girl or put 1-2 characters on the right .. ill play around tomorrow :D
03-24-2006, 01:01 AM
OH!!! love those eyes. don't loose that look. please!
03-24-2006, 09:40 AM
ooo lovely creature design bud! i like the soft colors too, not too harsh on the eyes, just perfect =) keep it going!
heres another version
03-24-2006, 01:19 PM
Good concept! but I love ya first idea that doesn't show riders. it's like a creature's journey that they can't choose their destination but the one who out of the frame did. and riders who out of the frame can mean the one who not important or some idiot too just like cow and chicken's dad and mom.
Go ahead! I will wait for your wips.
03-24-2006, 08:29 PM
hey adrian, great work so far! your last sketch is one of the best imho, although i'm missing the frog-like thingy:) come on, i'm lookin' forward to see more of your awesome sketches..
playing around with the mounts and brought the frog back ...
anzibon: hehe we'll see :)
adonihs: thanks :D
fiduciose: yeah im breaking my head over that ... ill try to go back to that idea somehow
salamandercoral: yo m8 .. youre right so far its my favorite comp too ... but i let that rest for now ..im trying to find something new where you cant see any other characters beside the mounts :D
mhhm mhhm ... its not that easy. Suppose i only show the mounts and legs or lower body parts of the riders im very limited perspectivewise. one option would be to try a frog perspective .. but i dont really want that. Its too iconic and the only bg would be the sky. Another option would be to try and arrange them somehow like in the last wip. I cant show much bg there either but if i work with the different sizes of the mounts i should manage it somehow
now my vast background would be the huge lizard carrying all kinds of saddlebags and other stuff.
next thing ill try is to change the pose of the creature in the foreground .. its too horizontal and flat right now, like the big lizard.
alright lets go :D
a little better i think ..but still not there yet ^^
03-25-2006, 03:25 PM
i really like the creatures faces...espesiallythe frog.. :)
will you do the humans the same? ore more anime as they are now??
03-25-2006, 04:20 PM
Okay, i'm buying into it. I like the idea of not showing the humans face now. It reminds me of Mononoke Hime where the creatures are as much important as the humans. Bro, keep it going with this idea, i think you can pull it off very well :D
Oh i like the latest composition, but maybe just add more space on the left side.
03-25-2006, 04:33 PM
I think that the frog(2nd "horse") looks a bit screwed. The picture is looking very interesting. Good luck.
heres one with 2 heads .. i have it with 1 head as well :)
Cyberone: dont know if there will be humans .. if yes then a mix of both
Arc80: yo m8 .. ill add more space soon :D
Vladius: your right he was screwed .. he may be back tough with a different look :)
03-25-2006, 07:33 PM
I love your creatures, man! The sense of colour is very nice. I agree, the mood reminds me of Mononoke, but I think it's great. Keep it up.
ok i widened it to the left a bit and brought the lizard closer. Now i'll probably put more space on the right to get another mount in ... i left the frog for fun :D
03-25-2006, 07:57 PM
The one with two heads and the frog is really funny. Great expressions. It seems you really have made a challenge for yourself, but are working it out better and better. Keep going!
Oh and the blue on the two headed creature seems a bit out of place...like the chroma is too high imo.
I like the blue :)
whats a chroma ?
03-25-2006, 08:17 PM
hey man, nice to see you around.... good luck, keep it up!
03-26-2006, 04:22 AM
Well...it's probably called something different in German. I tried a search and came up with nothing. I don't know German at all.
Sooo... here is my little explanation. I thought a comparison would help.
One is a pure basic green. Two is a really desaturated green as it is more towards grey. Three is a very high chroma green. It's intense. and Four deals with value.
I know that is a really simple definition, but I thought the less words the less confusing. Hope that helps.
03-26-2006, 11:42 AM
I think you meant to say that no. 2 was a really DE saturated green.
grey--->saturated color is the chroma scale.
03-26-2006, 01:14 PM
I think you meant to say that no. 2 was a really DE saturated green.
grey--->saturated color is the chroma scale.
03-28-2006, 06:10 PM
good luck man! nice concept so far, im waiting too see the finish concept, hurry hurry heheh!!
03-28-2006, 07:38 PM
Hi Vahn! Something original here... interesting idea about cropping in on the mounts rather than the travellers, thought I have to say my fave sketch this far is the one with the girl closest to the camera, just for the human interest and the general composition. This at the moment feels very close up, maybe expanding the canvas and getting a bit more lanscape in there if you're set on the crop idea would help?
The mounts are really unusual though, love their design, and the frog's expression is great! Keep up the work!
im sketching some compositions and i wont stop till something useful comes out :)
melody: hehe thx for the explanation :D
dchan: im on it man :D sometimes it just feels like my feet are bound together
Zephyri: glad you like it .. i agree the one with the girl is still the best .. ill do that sometime ( if everything else fails then maybe in this challenge :) ) ..im doing some comptests now..we'll see what comes out of it
ok this is a little better now .. still gotta make the way down the mountain more clear
any C&C very welcome :)
03-29-2006, 07:51 PM
are you planning on putting a character in the way right corner? if so I think thatd be awesome, but my clutter the pic. What if you made it just a TINY bit longer, to show some enviroment for these awesome characters? You can show the audience what theyre about to face, I think thatd be pretty damn cool.
Anyway you do it is cool, you seem to know what youre doing =) good work man.
ok now with more space on the left .. and a bridge going to the other side. still very rough but i have to play around with it some more.
Also i put another mount-head in the right corner .. just for a test ..have to sketch something better soon :D
03-29-2006, 08:48 PM
there we go dude, im loving that =] adds more I think, keep it up!
adonihs: hehe thx.. i tried to get another head in the right corner .. its a bit crowded now put ill try some different stuff soon :)
also now that im looking at it, i think its better that i show a way down into the valley on the left side, instead of a way up a mountain. I have something in mind like the shape of the chinese wall and a stone road beside it, winding its way into the valley ...something like that ....
03-30-2006, 12:20 AM
Looking better and better Vahn, love those characters! Can't wait to see how you make it even better!
03-31-2006, 02:36 AM
The latest sketch look cool, what bout their destination? I think bout a castle or dungeon beyond the mountain far far away or the bridge to the floating castle~~~
im going back to this one :D
unless i get back some creative energy and manage to get a good comp together for the mount idea ... i feel a little burned out atm
04-04-2006, 04:56 AM
I still like post #66 because of the unique idea behind it, but this one is cool too :D
I'm still in favour of the frog though :p
so keep it up and stop being lazy, hehehe
04-05-2006, 06:34 AM
Great Characters Bro...
Keep It Up!!!
04-05-2006, 01:33 PM
yeah im feeling burnt out too....maybe all that beer ive been drinking :)
looking forward to more updates but dont work yourself too hard on it....theres still heaps of time...
but im liking all the ideas really...im just looking to see which way you will finally go...
04-05-2006, 04:05 PM
heey nice progress Adrian! I love the girl-ly composition the most, I think you could go on with that :D
Keep posting man, you are great!
04-07-2006, 11:47 PM
imo you should only use the animals. they tell the story better. i hope to see this b/w wip colored soon.
The little Pumar people have traveled the long way north. Mining in the mountains is their passion. They were digging up beautiful chrystalls and very rare ore they cant get in the south. Mining they did over the winter far into spring .. and now - its almost summer - they have to travel back to their little kingdom in the south.
For their Journey back they decided to hire some bodyguards in the local town. The town was very quiet this week and it was very hard to find someone. The only one hanging around in the tavern was a lazy, young icewizard who didnt really want to go with them. But baiting him with chrystalls they did and finally they managed to hire him. They are still looking for more people ....
04-08-2006, 10:22 PM
I say go for this one:
It has so much promise. Do I see Nebezial's tutelage at work here? :)
(kein huftspeck hier, toll! :D )
Arc80: forget the frog m8 :D
THECLYKE: ty :)
Cyberone: hehe keeping off the beer helped lol :D ( nah just joking .. mhhhm beer )
BrutalMonk: köszönöm
warpy: mmhhm i keep it in the back off my mind but i dont think i can pull that one off
paperclip: hehe not sure .. its got a bit off juicy symbolism there someone told me lol  but i have a cool new Idea... just wait a little till i can get it down :D
04-08-2006, 10:36 PM
Teenage mind at work? :p
Kidding, kidding! I know you're a fully grown man.....
ok lets go! Heres one of the young pumar, who will play a major role in my scene.
after fixing some major hardware issues im back to the challenge .. i hope i'll find time to work on this :D
I have a scene in my mind alrdy .. but i start with the characters first and settle for a composition later. Above is one of the little pumar folk that will be the main characters on the stage.
04-27-2006, 07:58 PM
hey vahn, i've recognised some of your work from the daily sketch area and see that your journey begins entry is coming along very nicely, the creature designs are great and i'll be interested to see how this one develops.
(my own journey begins is still in the pencil sketch phase so i need to get going!)
Unfortunately i dont have time to go on here ...
thx everyone for the support
so see you all next challenge & good luck :)
