hiho valentina :wip:

03-02-2006, 01:58 PM
I've sketched down some ideas.
1. Man about to travel, making his dragon ready.
2. Different angle and background, same idea.
3. Adventurous fairy waking up.
I don't have much of a story at the moment, but that'll come eventually.
Which one do you people think I should pick?
03-02-2006, 02:02 PM
Hi Lady M,
I think No.2 has more of the "Just begining that epic journey" vibe to it. As from the angle you can see far into the distance, which suggests they're just starting a very long journey.
Good luck in the competition,
03-02-2006, 02:09 PM
Thank you, guys ^^
Mark- Hmm, youre saying something there :). Will be waiting for a few more opinions before I start fully :)
Thanks fot the good luck
03-02-2006, 03:19 PM
3rd is the sweetest (well, 1st is almost too), but the others are more to the point,
i'd keep that in mind and make a combo :)
03-02-2006, 03:27 PM
I like the third one best. Nice idea to
Thumbs up !
03-02-2006, 03:35 PM
Have to agree with Squibb, the fairy is sooo sweet and with a different angle and composition you could make it into a more adventurous awakening. Maybe combine 2 and 3?
03-02-2006, 03:39 PM
Maybe you could have a fairy camp with a distance like in no. 2? Flip no. 2 around, put in the fairy and toadstool as in no. 3 and there you go :D
We need more of a story! Why are they going?
03-02-2006, 03:50 PM
Squib- Will keep it in mind :p
Faras- Thanks :)
Urg- Now must try that :)
Clippy- You gave me another idea! *ventures off to Photoshop*
paperclip, they are going because they have a booth set up at SIGGRAPH.
03-02-2006, 04:04 PM
Oh yeah, allmost forgot ^^
Stories yes, I often prefer making it up while working on it, seen as I tend do change it a lot if I have one at the start, and that I use so very much time figuring out stories ^^... though this has its negative effecs and is a rather bad habit. Near the completision...eh.. completing stage I tend to get a sudden "Nooo, I'll abandon this dumb project :<", and then a sudden bost of "OhMyGod! YAY! And I was going to abandon it!" once I have the story somewhat on it's place ^^
but for now, lets just go whit JTD's "suggestion" :p
03-02-2006, 07:06 PM
The fairy idea is very good, maybe not so journey-ish as the other two?.... anyway, I'll better wait and see the new concept that p'clip has inspired you... :)
Good luck with this new challenge, Lady!
03-02-2006, 07:54 PM
I think the third is a cool sketch, but the second seems more of starting a journey. They are all good ideas though.
03-02-2006, 09:47 PM
I would chose the third one. Good luck Valentina. :)
03-02-2006, 09:59 PM
Very nice concept sketches :D
My favourite is the 2, maybe because it suites well the mood, but I'd put the characters more in front and give a more extreme perspective, from the front. Like in the angle the beast, and the back of the girl, or her face turned back, like she knows what is waiting for her.
I wish you good luck and keep it up :)
03-03-2006, 07:34 AM
2! :P though I love 1 too.
03-03-2006, 07:48 AM
i'd go for no.2 but i like the action on the 3rd.haha~i'll wait to see ur update soon:scream:
03-03-2006, 01:22 PM
Hey, cool you're in as well! I agree on adding number two, since closer shos have a greater impact, and she looks really cute :)!
Great going! Good luck.
03-03-2006, 01:33 PM
I like number 2 :) That fairy in 3 looks so cute.
Great work so far valentina!
03-03-2006, 01:36 PM
1. Man bringing shiny stone. He's going to ask her to come whit him and look for more shiny stones and other pretty objects.
2. Erm... now that I'm submitting I realize how nothing is going on here... strike it.
3. Evil, hungry toad. Looks like our fairy has to to find a new place to live, and thus the journey begins.
4. The guy has decided to surprice her... they will go looking for shiny rocks aswell
5. Evil, hungry toad, portrait format.
Now, 1,3,4 or 5? Which to pick?
Might make some more obvious ones.
03-03-2006, 01:40 PM
Number 1 sounds great :D but that's because I'm a fan of shiny things...
03-03-2006, 01:43 PM
I like no. 4 the best- I like the addition of the new fairy, it gives it a stronger narrative feeling and the composition is good with the toads arranged the way they are.
Go for it, woman!
03-03-2006, 02:09 PM
argh, I had this long post and accidentally hit the back arrow after previewing D:
@,@, so many comments...
Thank you guys and girls :)
Madaleine- Ooh~ Shiny, hehe, who doesn't like shiny things? :D. He's also giving her a shiny rock in no. 4 by the way :)
Teresa- Thank you. You're right about that :). It do give a more narrative feeling
03-03-2006, 02:21 PM
I consider that the fifth variant quite good:)
03-03-2006, 02:33 PM
I think number 4 works well since you coud give either of them particular travelling gear. Aesthetically ofcourse, 1 is pretty nifty.
03-03-2006, 04:49 PM
4 or 5, can't decide :) Toss a coin to decide? :)
03-03-2006, 04:59 PM
dat frog in #4 & #5 rulez like no other thing
03-03-2006, 05:15 PM
kort_art: Thanks :)
Jan-Mark: Thank you :). Hmm, traveiling gear... Youre saying something there :D
Peter: D:! I knew it was a bad idea to trade in all my coins to those paper money. :p
Panu: *ribbit* Thank you XD
I'm going for nr 4 :)
03-04-2006, 10:59 AM
I use the bucket tool and make my dull-ish blue a nice happy cyan, and add a slight dark blue gradient in it.
I then proceed to quickly make the ground and whit some custom brushes I add some grass and some clouds.
Then I added the colors on the mushrooms and the frogs.
The fairies are a little more complicated, so I'll take them a little later.
03-04-2006, 01:09 PM
Haha! This looks great Valentina!
Once crit...The two frogs, maybe make on them look more different, at the moment they are both looking up, perhaps the frog at the front could have a different expression? Different pose?
03-04-2006, 02:50 PM
I like your concept and the yawning faery is very cute. I like version 4 too but also like the eye in version 5 of the frog nearest. Best of luck to you!:)
03-04-2006, 04:15 PM
waaa i like them all...every one of them is special each its own way!! sorry for getting here late.. good luck!!:D
03-04-2006, 04:18 PM
Sweet scene, Lady
03-04-2006, 04:27 PM
Madaleine- Thank you. I'll make the the one in the background more cheery, since he got a fly :)
Samantine- Thanks, I'll give him round pupils :)
Calisto- hehe, no need for appologies. Thanks
Panu- Thank you :)
03-04-2006, 04:33 PM
Cute sketch Valentina! Love the poses of the little faeries :)
03-04-2006, 06:15 PM
Now things are starting to take shape.
I've given the closer frog more shape, and I've also started working a little on the mushrooms.
03-04-2006, 06:16 PM
Alisa- Thank you :)
03-04-2006, 06:35 PM
looks like a perfect way to start a journey, after a relaxing nap under a mushroom.
03-04-2006, 06:40 PM
hehehe.... that frog is simply great
#4 was my favourite composition too, good choice...
a suggestion: what about changing the time of the day to the beggining of the morning, maybe the sunrise? that would make sense with the fairy waking up...
03-04-2006, 06:56 PM
badger badger badger (...) badger badger, mushroom, mushroom! I love mushrooms :D
Cool sketches, waiting for more!
03-05-2006, 09:16 AM
weeeeeeee valentina joined. I like the concept of the adventurous ferrie waking up
03-05-2006, 09:33 AM
Mona- Exactly! :)
Feo- Thank you. yeah, youre right. I've never acctually seen the sunrise myself (I'm such a sleepy head ^^), but I'll try waking up earlier. Google doesn't really give me the feelings the real morning would, if you get me.
Drakula- hehehe, Thank you
Jannis- Thee hee- :)
03-06-2006, 04:10 PM
The Red mushroom in the background is still early stages, so you can see how I make them.
Some places, like under the mushrooms, are easier to work on, starting from the darkest value. Others, like the top of the mushrooms, are easier starting on the mid value
03-07-2006, 01:09 AM
hey! my favorite Lady!!! I think that this Challege was made for you! Good luck in this thread and the 3D... I'll wait for more updates...
03-07-2006, 09:30 AM
Glad I am not the only one with an interest in frogs.
I like how you are breaking down your rendering techniques. Looks like you are off to a great start.
03-07-2006, 04:35 PM
I paint the other frog and the mushrooms, and start painting over the lines on the left side. I also add a quick little shadow under the frogs and the mushrooms so I won't forget about that later when I start rendering the grassy "moss"
Sweet update. I'd be careful if I was a fairy. The frogs might get me.
03-07-2006, 06:03 PM
these frogs looks so cool ... :bounce:
03-07-2006, 06:32 PM
Adriän- Grazias :)
FalseEye- Thank you. hehe, amazing little creatures, they are :)
JTD- Thank you. Hehehe, not if the frogs are like wild uncontrollable horses for them ^^. Yes, They are going to capture a frog and
Makaron- Thank you :)
03-10-2006, 01:22 AM
hey Lady M,
love your work. only thing that's catching my eye with this cmoposition is that the road kind of goes to nowhere. i don't get any feeling that these characters are going to set off down this road. they seam pretty content where they are. am i missing some story?
really looking forward to seeing this come together,
03-10-2006, 01:50 AM
awesome looking valentina :D love how u made the frog :D
03-11-2006, 10:11 AM
I painted over the lines so they won't be in the way.
I'm trying to get an early morning feel whit the sky. What do you think, should I keep it or go back?
03-11-2006, 11:11 AM
anzibon- Tyere not going because they have to, but because they whant to ;). Maybe I should put something there anyway
Aggie- Thank you :)
03-11-2006, 11:38 AM
looking great! I like those white details on the top of the mushrooms, it gives them a lot of realism...
...do you mind a crit from someone who barely knows what he's talking about?
I think that, if you decide to make it in the early morning, the most important part would be the shadows, not the sky... shadows would be longer and there should be more contrast between light and dark areas, but (for what I've seen) that's not exactly your style, you use to have everything well lit...
my advice is that you go with whatever you are more comfortable with... :)
...and if you cannot wake up in time to see the morning, you could just try to spend a loong party night till sun rises up :D hehehe....
03-11-2006, 12:31 PM
Oooo I like the sky. I agree with elmasfeo about the shadows, really dramatise them and make some of the mushrooms in the distance partially silhouette against the sky.
Really great work!
03-12-2006, 10:43 AM
Hello! nice work here :D
I agree with elmasfeo and enialadam and also I think some haze in the distance would be great! ;)
(but it's only a test right?)
03-12-2006, 10:50 AM
me like this new sky too... :applause:
03-12-2006, 11:15 AM
Feo- Party?... hehe, that reminds me about last time I tried to pull an all-nighter... I were going to watch fireworks all night, suddenly I woke up, still standing in the window :scream:
Youre right though, I'm still not comfortable whit long shadows, only use them when I whan't to make something creepy or a little lonelyish.
Madaleine- Shillhouettes?! :D Of couse! That will be added :)
Dhomochevsky- Thanks, yup, basically, only a test :)
Mona- Thank you... I'm going whit the older one though :/
Sorry pople, I'm sticking whit the old sky, for now attleast.
03-12-2006, 11:31 AM
I would maybe suggest that you reduce the red Miss D'Este, it just appears a little too sunset rather than sunrise... only a fraction though!:D
03-12-2006, 03:46 PM
I go back to the blue sky as I don't feel comfortable whit longer shadows, at the moment. I've painted the clouds as well. Theresa Ryan (a.k.a. Paperclip) mentioned in another thread that the horizon was a little too hard, so I've tried to soften it. Thank you miss :).
I blocked in the main fairy. She will get hair and clothes eventually. I'm not fully sure her proportions are correct though.
03-12-2006, 04:07 PM
I love the sky! The clouds look really soft and I like how you have softened the horizona and made the mushrooms more silhouette against the sky, creates more distance.
Great work! I think the proportions look fine to me, but I'm not an expert on anatomy ;)
woot!! This is look great
03-12-2006, 04:11 PM
you can make her foot strech more at the toes... the toes point more forward, so it doesn´t look so broad... otherwise the fairy looks just fine to me :)
hey nice work Val keeeeeeep it up n gooooooood luck in both
03-13-2006, 10:23 AM
yay, this looks great!
03-16-2006, 01:35 PM
I refined the lady and gave her clothes and hair.
I tried to get the foot point more downward, but it looks a little flat now so it probably doesn't show that well.
I use a little reference on the foot and for the yawning expression.
The clothes were looking a little boring, so I added stripes, then yellow and them a little more detail.
03-16-2006, 01:54 PM
Madaleine~ Thank you :)
Mona~ Thanks. Tried it out :)
Nahvi~ Thank you :)
Panu~ Wee, Thank You :)
I really use too many smileys on theese D:
I don't feel right looking at these references of you yawning. Maybe a couple of months from now you'll look back and say, "Hm, not such a good idea."
Anyway, cool update. I love the foot with the splayed toes. That's how I stretch in the morning.
03-16-2006, 02:46 PM
Hmm, yer saying something there JTD. And knowing how often I regret what I do and say/post, your very probably right ^^
Thank you for the comment too :)
03-16-2006, 02:51 PM
pfft, i'm not scared, i seen yawning people before!
nice work on the faerie, Valentina
I just didn't want your image popping up on some unscrupulous sites all photoshopped into compromising situations.
P.S. We need to find a way to scare Squibbit!
03-17-2006, 01:11 AM
whoa~i love those frogs!nice touch on the faerie's toes :scream:keep it coming valentina
03-17-2006, 02:06 AM
Hey mona! Well, u seem to be missing cast shadows, U plan on painting them in? But ur looking good so far, keep going!
Maybe for the pose u can use urself or maybe have some one pose for u to get that pose spit shine accurate! peace will be again!
03-17-2006, 03:31 PM
Aw, how cute! :D
This fairy is a late sleeper? Since it's already full day... or she took a siesta?
Good job so far!
Her right breast seems too high, it would rise a bit but I think about half as much, the rest of it is stretch... the 'corset' seems to have moved up too far, it would resist being pulled up more than the real breast. Exactly how much, depends how stiff it is of course... the best thing, as was mentioned, is to find a similar piece in real life and take reference shots.
03-17-2006, 07:08 PM
Panu: Hehe. Thank you~
JTD: *Immagines nasty edit being spread around* Oh my... there really is a lot of ewwy things you could do whit the image of a yawning person D:
Scaring the Squibb... hmmm?
Michael: Thank you~ :)
Beelow: Mona? Ye be confused now :p, Yup, shadows are coming.
Mr. Sthalberg: Thank you~. Lets say she took a nap :)
I acctually have something a little similar somewhere in my closet, really should follow that tip :)... If only I could find it though <.<
I think I'll give it some strops aswell that she can tie around her neck
03-17-2006, 07:37 PM
great ideea and paintings ! keep it this way !
good luck ! i'll keep an eye on you ! :scream:
03-18-2006, 06:27 AM
Oh, sorry bout that, Valentina, Haha! Damn imustbe out of it! I have been without rest, bear with me!:D
03-18-2006, 07:44 AM
your fairy is begin to look really cute now :) with those changes you done...
03-18-2006, 12:22 PM
aargh, I should check your thread more frequently before you edit your posts, now I've lost the oportunity to see you yawning.... :D hehee...
the fairy is looking very good, even the toes are yawning...
03-21-2006, 08:59 AM
The ferrie looks great :D i like the way u made the pose and the clothes.
03-27-2006, 09:35 AM
love the expressions of the characters, and colour looks good so far! keep it up ! cheers
03-28-2006, 04:22 PM
I gave the yawning fairy new wings and worked on her hair. I also fixed her left breast, that was placed a little too high.
Added in the male fairy.
I think I need to study hands and feet a little more before proceeding there. I see there is something wrong, but I can't seem to get it right. He's expression is also looking a little crazy, compared to what I wanted him to express.
03-28-2006, 04:24 PM
My mother told me he looks a little like two friends of mine mixed, mainly one of them. That is purely coincidental, but I want him to have long hair and beard so hopefully that doesn't bother you guys ^^
I will redo his face anyway though so that part will change a little bit.
Beelow- naaw, Its ok ^^
Mona- Thank you
feo- Haha, thanks
Michael- Thank you
03-28-2006, 05:49 PM
he looks like he see something scary. his eyes is starring maybe a tiny bit too much... but I like his hair and beard :) her wings has a nice shade now...
03-28-2006, 09:26 PM
Just wondering- what is the fairy on the top of the mushroom doing?
Right now it looks like they're both just settling down for a nap......and the fairy on the top is keeping an eye out for predators (the frogs?) .
04-06-2006, 05:24 PM
I worked on the mushrooms a little and gave the female fairy a new and better foot and the base of the bed. I'm going to cover it in feathers.
04-06-2006, 05:41 PM
Mona- haha, yeah, they are ^^;. Thank you
Theresa- Uh.. He's going to give her a surprise, but that's not nessesarily a good reason to sit up there ^^. I'm cosidering putting him another place though.
The frogs here are just curious peekers :)
I'll post a closeup of the foot :)
100%, sadly. Should be a little bigger.
I've had a break from the challege since I was sooo frustrated having problems whit the feet. Hope I'm not the only one liking them though :scream:
04-07-2006, 09:16 PM
You know what? Cut out a little square with the toes only in them and move them up and to the left a little and then connect it to the rest of the foot. Right now it looks like the foot is oddly round, leading straight up into the leg and with toes attached.
Feet are tough, aren't they? :D
04-15-2006, 11:49 AM
I think I've fixed the female fairy's foot. I've worked a little on the backgroungs aswell.
Now I'm trying to figure where to put the man.
1, 2 or 3? What do you people think would be best?
04-15-2006, 11:50 AM
Thank you Theresa :)
They sure are DX
04-15-2006, 12:30 PM
I like no. 2 the best- there's a good sense of interaction between them, with him holding the package and everything, it indicates a journey best of all. Go with it!. I like the way it looks like he's waiting for her to wake up so they can continue on their journey. I think you should really load him up with stuff for the journey, so it looks like he's doing all the work. :D You could use that to comic effect- give her a teeny little package in contrast or something.
04-17-2006, 03:07 PM
I like #2... in #1 they are too grouped together, and #3 is quite good with the guy looking at the horizon, but... maybe it is missing more interaction between both of them... so I say 2... it's your choice anyway, none of them are bad...
Feet are tough ... uh... my avatar feels so bad... he always tries to behave himself but... it's difficult for him you know... :(
ok, more seriously, and like theresa said, the ankle in your foot image before looked too big IMO, and joining the foot too high up instead of joining at the heel... but you say you've fixed so I don't know...
