Cool sketches so far laeticia, what's disturbing me with the first idea is that it looks so close from the challenge picture (http://features.cgsociety.org/challenge/journey_begins/images/journey_cgtalk_large.jpg), it's the same idea i mean no ?

Hi there,
i must say i like the first one better. I cant really visualize the sceond and or the idea behind it. The other i can more relate to and the idea comes over very good.
Also i like gras and landscapes, its pretty fun to model and to visualize. so number 1...

Even if it appears more complex to me, I think that Ill choose the second concept, especially because in my humble opinion, its more difficult to carry out ants (less references) and to emphasize to it emotions.
You dont think so ? :scream:

Hey Laeticia,
I really like your idea for this challenge.
I have seen some of your indoor renders and they are really good.
So I bet you won't have much trouble with that!
The organic modeling is quite good. But for the moment I am afraid, it will not look convincing if you keep up your quality on indoors... I know how organic modeling can be a pain in the... well, can be very difficult! I have my problems with this, too.
However, except of the eye area the mesh is really coming along nicely! I bet if you fix this and do a nice texturing it'll be as good as the rest of your work!
Maybe if you can show some wires the guys and gals around can help you with this area of the mesh!

as ][ndy said the modeling looks ok. Nice and clean it seems but we would love to see some wires. I'm sure you'll fix the eye so i don't comment on that ....and good luck with the challenge!!

Hey Pretty one !
Great start , really like the mouth area ! Seems overall pretty clean and well executed ... So now my advice would that you need to focus on proportions ... easier now you got the wire in place ! From there I would say you need to redefine the nose ... and bigger cheekbones ...
Of course some wireframes could help us to lead you on corrections ...
Looking for more ,
Hope you have great time on holidays ,

Hey Laeticia !
I pretty much agree with the whole Dodgeas3d's correction pic ... so I won't bother you with same crits here ...
Just some personal tips :
-Try to find face muscles sketches ... look at the main muscles and match your lineflow to it ...
-Try to not modelise with a smooth proxy ... I mean try to work and find the right shape as much as possible with low poly version . If it looks good in lowpolys, it obviously will with Hires.
-Don't be afraid to put polys where it needs ... I mean I think it's better to add 2 edges than pulling a vertex like a nut ! .
-Don't hesitate to erase a part you're not satisfy with !
That's it ... I'm sure you're gonna make it !
Looking forward for your corrected version ! :)
cheers ,

It is starting to look good :)
Here are some things i noticed..
There is not much brow so try and push that out a bit.
The eyes should maybe have another edgeloop around the inside and be modified to fit the eyeball.
The lips should be a little bit rounder areound the corners. (possibly)
Finally the neck looks a little small and there is no muscle in it.
Its going well, keep it up and good luck :)

don't worry, laeticia, organic modeling is hard but you are doing a great job for a start. and remember, humans are the hardest to do because everybody knows what they should look like...
i'm not sure whether you were going for a stylized human or a realistic proportions one. if it's stylized then only you know whether things are okay. but if you want realistic proportions then there are some basic things you should consider. eyes sit right in the middle of the head vertically, it's hard to tell from yours because you haven't finished the forehead, but bear it in mind. heads are five eyes widths across. a nose is one eye width across at the base (nostrils) etc. if that is at all helpful then you can get some free help from www.fineart.sk and look for drawing the head and hands.
well, all the best, you're gonna do fine.

Cool design! I like that its not a plain head. It has character. Some crits on topology, there are 2 triangles near the nose that could be combined into a quad. Also the mouth seems to not have many edge loops around it. This can help with creating expressions, but its a necessity.

Yes ! You have already do a good travel since the beginning !
So, there is few things to change (for exemple the area beetween the mouth & tne nose
which verry tall I think) ...
At the begining when i see your last render, i have got the feeling that you have choose
caricatural style (plz don't beat me ^^ ) ... but I realize that the neck is not finish for
exemple ... so I think for the moment it's hard to have a really good idea of the
proportion here ... perhaps a good way to quickly finish the head volume, then detailling
after (I know it's not the only solution but, perhaps easier to help you)

you need to refine the lips and be very focused in this area, try to look for references, always try to catch as much references as you can.

Im always a little bit afraid to modify the geometry of the lips because for me its the most complex part to realize : Ive can be wrong !

Hi again flaeticia, try to down the sss, with the sss fast skin shader. Real human skin only scatters light like that in the most extreme of situations like having a torch shine through the skin.
Also, i think your model is coming along nicely now. I hae one last crit for it. try and raise the cheek bones a bit up and outwards. I beleive this will correct the long aperance of the face.
FINNaannlly...look up some nice mental ray lighting tutorials for maya as it is almost always the case that lighting is what brings out the materials true power.
Good luck, and keep going :)

Keep at it as the human form is the hardest thing to get right, just keep at it u'll get it right, just observe what u are doing, meaning have referenced pics, ur measuring but guessing at the same time! Good work so far I would say he needs some cranium in the back!

Hey Laetica!
When using your mirror picture then nothing can go wrong!
As for your modeling:
Very nice. But I guess somehow you got it with big noses! But there is nothing wrong with this!
As for the mouth: Since I have no wireframe picture of it I guess you used two lines close together to form the "sharp edge" between mouth and face. I would suggest to move those two line more apart towards the corners of the mouth. So the sharp edge will disapear more towards the end and it will blend in nicely!
Well, just my two cents, or euro cents!
Keep it up!

i think you shoul consider how detailed and smoothed these faces and actually all the details of these two characters because in your composition they'll be pretty small . so.. you might want to try a test render with some boxes instead of all the furniture or something from the sketch, add the faces , the put it over the sketch and see how big it shoul be for the final render, for the quality of the textures , for the antialiasing options and so on..
good luck and keep it up !

In my humble opinion, you should stop those renders, remove the glowy text and concentrate on the important parts!
Clearly your model is far from finished. I can't spot one area that looks finished. Looks like a man to me..
If you want constructive critics you should not hide your mistakes behind glowy text and perspective views. Lets see the same view as you see in the viewport and I'm sure you will get more constructive comments to improve your modeling.

Anyway, I like the wire Laeticia :bounce: . If I may, 3 points comes to me on this vue
1° the mouth is a big unscaled frome the rest of the head (maybe just te lower lip?)

3° The eyes are in a bit big as well

Nice work on the model so far - Very feminine features.
The mouth looks great but there appears to be some pinching in the corner.
I can't quite see close enough to work out why - Topology looks fine from this distance hmm.
Do you have front/side wires too and maybe a closeup of the corner of the mouth? :)

I battle with this type of modelling but have found that the joan of arc tutorial to be one of the best and and most comprehensive tut's that I have seen so far.It is for max so I don't know what software you are using.Have a look at it ,maybe there is something in there you can use.

nice update
the nose and mouth shape are really good now, I think !
I'm not sure, but something is disturbing me into the eyes ... not the size
(some girls have really big eyes in this world) but the shape ... perhaps
we could better see with a front view if you do it !
For the ear, I have the solution :
put her a bonnet ... not really realistic (quoique...:buttrock: ) at bed, but ...
(yes, sorry i'm only joking :D )

Now, Sincerely, the part wich need more work is the eye's shape... each eye appear too much symetrical... very large... and eyelids too much uniform...
