Hello to you all.

I am happy to find you again at this new contest so I wish you all good luck.

As soon as I finish my sketch I will post it. It will be an abstract subject which will not include bugs or insects. I hope ther is no prolem with this. Is there a problem if my characters will look like a human but they are objects?

So, I started by drawing the concept sketch. I imagined a store which creates wax figures. After many years, somewhere in a corner, in dust and dirt, there was a small figure of wax (a boy) and very close to him a metal shape, which humans used the give a shape to the wax. That metal box had the shape of a girl. So, the wax boy felt in love and decided to offer his wax in order to give life to "girlfriend". And this is the picture, the journey I want to show; the journey of that wax pouring from the boy's wing intro the girl's metal shape.
I hope you like my idea and I also hope I can illustrate the picture exactly like it is in my mind.

I think I will keep an eye on you...just for the fun of it.
HAHAHAHA.
However, the idea is not bad. Making a clear image out of it will be quite a big quest. I am talking about the stage Before SSS...I mean the setting, and the characters.

Fine idea though, impressive...

What do you mean by difficult to understand? Are you talking about the entire subject of my story? I know it's not so obvious what I what to express, but I like this kind of subject.

Now when I think of all this I realize that the most difficult part for me , now, is the location of the camera, but there is enough time to solve this situation.

Also 10x for reply.

Sorry for the late post, but I just noticed: The hands on the angel are WAY too small. Childs do have big heads and small hands, that much is true. But it is a fine line that shouldn't be crossed. Perhaps you want to take a look at some renesaince paintings and esspecially sculptures, wich features so called Amors...those ugly distorted kids in the same block as the central figures....

The second one: The position of the angels Iwill not show the point you want to make to someone who didn't read your comments.
Making your idea obvious will be one heck of a challenge. Give some more thinking to the composition and to the overall concept. You are jumping to the details too early

simovici
03-12-2006, 09:26 AM
For the moment I can only answer to your second suggestion. My JOURNEY is a metaphorical one. I can not put the angel in a position as they were alive and moved. They are statues. I will try to show the supreme love between two human beings, when one gives life for another. In my case the wax angel will give his wax in order to give live (here wax) to the girls he loves (here the metal shape of the girl).

Maybe I choose a difficult subject for my JOURNEY, but this is it and as always, we are responsible for our decission so I will do my best to describe the feelings and the atmosphere just exactly as I imagined.

Concerning your first remark I will check again after I finish the metal girl and correct the disproportion.

Thanks.

Hi!

My comments so far:

Your idea is very abstract, I mean, it will be a bit challenging that viewers understand clearly your interpretation of "Journey" unless you use the composition well, and may be even give us some kind of hint inside the image about your interpretation.

Then again, your idea is very original, and people judging this kind of contests want to be surprised. So I say Go Fo It. Give us a great image.

I like the faces of the children. I would really appreciate if you could show the mesh. I am looking for guidance since I am trying to model a child myself (older and not statue) and I am not too satisfied with the mesh I have so far. I think the faces of your statues are excellent.

You seem to intend to give your scene great detail. That is very good. Are the clothes real fabric dressing a wax statue? If they are, I think the detail you show will be awesome. If not, I don't think I saw that much detail in real wax figures. Then again, may be I didn't see too many good wax statues :)

I don't agree with the advise that you be more "anatomically accurate" (the size of the hands I mean), because I don't think that is really what you are after. I personally like the proportions just the way they are. When I see baby angels portrayed in old drawings, they indeed have big heads and tiny hands and feet. It makes them more "baby-like" and "cute", I believe.

I am looking forward to see the atmosphere you give to your picture.

@ fer: Thank you for the advice and you are right concerning the look of these statues. The clothes of the kids will be made of wax and maybe I put to many details there. It's the ideea I want to show in my scene and trust me it's not easy at all. I also thought about some clues that are going to be the key of the scene and this clues wil be somewhere in the background, I am not telling yet what, because I want to be a surprise. :)

Concerning the mesh, do you want me to show you a wireframe of my models? Is that ok for you?

And again, thk you for your reply.

This is a test with the texture for the wall. I still have to work a lot, but I'll wait until I finish all the texture, because I might use DOF and then I won't need too many details.

@Eratrioch: Do you refer to textures for the wall. You are right and I'll have to use a bigger resolution for the texture. Perhaps in the next few day I will put the lights i nthe scene, so that I can see clearly which objects must have a lot of details.

nice modelling, although i think you will have a problem from a graphical , comunnicative point of view to tell your story. i mean isnt't a little complicated? you are showing a journey of love, but with a character that is melting onto another one and you have to show some great facial feelings from to melting characters so that somebody gets the ideea.dont forget an image - and this one for this challenge isnt different - is meant to communicate something, not the text attached. i'm sorry i'm so critical but you want to think about how is gonna look at the finish.. i have an ideea for you , you can test the ideea on your friends, you draw a detailed sketch of your image and ask your friends that dunno whats it all about and see if the catch the ideea or not .. cheers and good luck

bafta :)

Thank you all for replies.

@Necksmasher : I am still working at the textures and the now there are only the default lights. The atmosphere will be very dark, to make a contrast between the two angels and the environment.

@thedirtypaw: it's ok with the critics and it's not the first time when somebody tells me that the scene is very hard, I mean hard to explain. I made that test and only some of them realized the meaning of the scene. Of course, now I can not give up and I'll do everything that's possible to express the best way I can. I will help , somehow, the scene, by introcing a small paper in the scene, and that paper will contain some wise word about love and care. I'll try to make that paper not very obvious in the scne so that the persone that will look at it, will have to look verycareful at the scene. I'll see what I can do.

Anyway, I thank you again for your advices.

Dramatic light, indeed!!
Keep up the good work. I agree with Thedirtypaw that is a difficult scene. I think it's all based in the camera angle and facial expressions to make sense.
Anyway, you're doing great so I'll saty tuned to see where it ends.
Hope you the best of lucks!

OK.

This is my story. I imagined a small store which produced small was figures. After many years, somewhere in the dirty corner, a small wax figures saw a a metal shape, used by humans to fill it with wax. So, he felt in love and his love was so great, so that he decided to give himself entirely (his wax), to fill that metal shape. Inthis way, his "great love" will be alive, I mean, she will finally receive her wax body.

So, this is may journey, a journey of love, and I desperately hope that I can shiw this very clearly. Very quick I will show the wax melting.

And thanks for reply.

Looks very nice!
Maybe you should test some shadows.
Mainly to see which areas will be affected by dark areas.

Are you going to show some kind of aperture on the girl's body? I mean, how do you do to take the wax figure out of her?
This, maybe, can clear the overall sense...

Congrats!

Hi,

I don't think you have much choice in positioning the main elements, since the wax of the angel has to fall directly to the girl. Maybe you can manipulate the other elements instead since you have more freedom there.

I noticed that the angel (yellowish) is in the middle of other yellow elements. Likewise, the girl is surrounded by reddish things. Is this intentional? I mean, you might be trying to subdue those elements. However, I wonder.

Are you detailing the books a little more? Also, the angel looks a little to "liquid", not really wax-like at this point. May be because it is actually melting to give life to the girl?

Good luck to you!

In fact, I didn't intend to make this sepration, yellow vs. red. I only want this two characters to have the main attention and not the rest of the elements. As for the wax, I havent's finalized the tweaking of the shader. First I want to finish the lighning of the scene.

Concerning the books, maybe I will give them more details.
Thanks for the advices.

Man if I tell you that is a very chaotic scene, you would say I have something personal with you. I don't, despite of the fact I yelled at you just the other day. This is the truth and don't know if anybody told you this. You, as an artist should manipulate people to feel as you want. You can do this by leading their sight on different spots on the image in specific order...then you won't have to deal with question like "what the hell is happening there".
Tech coments would be: Old books have soft edges, wax doesn't really have any specularity,
metals usually tint the specular highlights and the metal angel looks like she is made out of clay or something similar. Too much dirt on it...

this is it. Another thing: You don't have to do it only in the renderer. You can make something for compositing...

As an advice, i would sugest you to stand back 4-5 feet from monitor and look at your own creation. Did you see something? Hmm, do not be explicit, The Journey Begins !, remember?
In my opinion your journey is allready done. You should let the image talk. If you think that the note you put in, should do the job for you, you could find a better one, and focus that. I hope we can really discuss about the subject, i don't want to fight with you, i am just making some personal observations. You can corect me if i am wrong.

04-17-2006, 08:05 AM
@Impotentia: Maybe you 're right and I will do the following change. I will let that post on the wall but without any note and I'll do all I can to make the image talk for itself. I will do this even if at the end the result will not be as I expected. I am still improving the lightning in maya. I am not very good at, so I will try to do it. I realized that my subjects it pretty had to be described. You know, tell me what love is? ask this to anybody and you will receive a different answer.

@E.M.P.E.R.O.R.: I won't givetha same answer twice so please read below. I am still learning and it's still WIP.

just wanted to say that i loved the 'feeling' in one of the pictures above, just before you corrected the texture... the shadow that falls on the boy angel gives him a special aura, which is now lost, and even the texture/shader > the more transparent/translucent the more one could relate to some form of angelic nature, close to a ghost even as it melts..

like you said " da-i bataie ! "

Hey, nice wax shader!!
Love it in post 82, that ethereal translucence is somewhat mystical.
BTW, which software are you using?
Maybe, keep that translucence and low down the specular level will fit more precisely on wax.
Keep working, it's coming along very well!!

Thank you very much for your replies. Yes, the wax I had in post 82 wax very close to what I am looking for. I will ocme soon with a preview of what I have done these days. I changed some light, not spectacular changes, but the wax is going to look different, not so mucvh light, it will be a vey diffuse environment. Also the wax will not bo so yellow, as these two characters were forgotten there in a corner for a very long time. I'll see what I can do.

I also changed the camera view.

Thsi is the final image,...

...and the story of this picture starts in small shop, where an old man was creating and selling small wax figure. After a few years, due to his age, this man died but nobody continued his work. His shop was closed and nobody entered that place many years after that.
But even this way, the story of the wax figures was not over, because somewhere in a storage room, where only a few rays of light could enter, between old books and broken old stuffs, a small wax figure, looking like a boy fall in love with another figure, looking like a girl. But that figure was not made of wax, it wax a metal shape, which was used in giving a shape to the wax. The shaped, usually was filled with wax. But not this time. This time it was an empty shape, a shape wihout a life.
The moment when the wax boy, in his great love for that girl, decided to give his wax to give life to the girl, was the begining of the jorney. This journey was a journey of love, when nothing else matters except this strange feeling of making happy the the person you love the most.

I hope you liked my story and in the end I would like to thank to all those who gave an advice or trusted in me. Good luck to everybody.

dar in primul rand as umbla la texturi si contrast

felicitari, altfel, e . faina imaginea.
