This is the first offical concept sketch, many more on the way. The concept is about a tribe that uses these creaturs as a tool for many things, including war. My concept idea for this challenge is to have a small caravane of these things (probably two or three) traveling through a desert, or a light forest or maybe a rocky forest.
I have big story ideas for this that will be hinted at with every entry.

lol, Lost boy you are my hero, here is a compostition test
i was thinking of having two riders moving along a path and we would see a whole landskape in the back, in the final pictur i was thinking of more of a weir rocky landskape with rock formations that arnt possible.

More comming soon^.^
im finishing my finals, and after that i will obsess over this project because i think it is just soo cool ;P thanks guys

lol, yes its only a picture of the grand canyon, i use pictures as quick mockups befor jumping into design. This is only to capture the feeling of vastness that i am after. i wanted to know what u guys thought of the general concpet and placement i have going on here. Obviously the low poly characters in the forground and background are only placeholders. i appologize for not specifiying that it is a photogragh for concept purposes only :)

Im starting the higher resonlution model of the main creature and pinning down the rider(s) design still. I will have new pics or the model WIP soon.

thanx guys,
-joel

lookin good. Can't wait to see your landscape ideas. Just remember, it's going to be about a journey, so it would be cool to give a sense of what direction or destination they are headed to, OR show that they are packed for long travel, and not a stroll to the local market.

oh, good luck on your tests!, or just ask the teacher if you can make it up because you are doing something very important!

:)

lostboy: Thank you lost boy, i agree. Ive been trying to come up with suble ways to make it seem more journeyish, like adding supply packs on them like u would put on a horse. lol, im thinking of doing a caravan type thing which might be cool. i love the conecept of these creatures moving though a rocky type landskape, you are the greatest ;)

hobo: DUDE that is FREAKEN AwSome!!! Thank you soooooo much, that helps me a lot!!

alvin_cgi: thank you, i hope i can make it as cool as i see it in my head

glad you find it useful, if you look to my effort you will see that I will also be trying for that sort of landscape. It'll be interesting to see how we do .. :)

Here is the first major pass at makeing the main creature, im still developing the model and im going to start refining it soon. Im having trouble with the hair and was wondering if anyone had any advice :P (im using 3ds max 8)
All comments and critique are much appreciated.

thanks guys

it's good to see you are back on the challenge again. Your model is coming out good. But it may be just me, but your sketch had a more apelike tarzanish quality to it that I liked.
And I wish I could help you with the hair, but my knowledge is limited, especially with Max. Although, I could tell you that it would look better with more shaggy, grimy hair like your drawing, instead of straight. A little hair on the body would help to, like around the legs. Keep the train movin, you're doin great!

This is really coming out nicely! As for hair, I have heard that it takes quite awhile to render in 3d studio max. Instead you may want to use polygonal hair with alpha maps. Your characters look like they are far way, and the card method would look great from a distance. As for body hair, you could simply draw lines on the UV map of the characters. And if that is not enough youl could add a very light density 3d studio max hairs that stick out and are thick for a profile view. I'm not sure how to work with hair in 3d studio max, but you may want to ask Womgoose about it. He seems to be having success with max hair.
