View Full Version : Polymodeling in Maya
karabo 12-13-2002, 10:54 PM Is there a quicker way to extrude edges other than going through the spacebar menu and clicking extrude edge? The reeason I ask is because it gets annoying constantly going into the menu anytime you want to extrude an edge.
I also use Max and it's easy in Max, you just hold down shift and drage the edge to extrude. Is there a shortcut like that in Maya? It would make my life so much easier.

You can make a shortcut. Maya is insanely customizable the sooner you start customizing the better off you will be. Also pressing the 'g' key will go to the last tool you were using

Here's how to put a certain tool on a shelf. Hold down ctrl+alt+shift and go to the menu....select the tool (still holding those 3 buttons down...oh and hold the mouse button down too), it will then create a icon on a shelf for you. Then when you want to use that tool again, just click the icon it created. Don't forget to save your shelf after you do it so next time you come into maya it will still be there. Understand?

after you have extruded an edge, you can use the g key to repeat the last action

I'm not a Maya user but I was interested in it's interface. Can
{
COMMAND
}
bring up an appropriate custom marking menu? That way if polys are selected you can effortlessly bring up several poly-related sets of tools and don't even have to click.

that.. command.. is whatever command you whant.. and with mel .. that can be pretty much anything, it can be to create a cube.. or create a complete rig, its all in da code!
if you whant a menu.. just.. well.. hit space.. the hotbox should do it.

No, hotbox isn't good enough. Custom context-sensitive marking menues should do the trick. No hierarchical menues and extra clicks - just swipe towards a tool and you're done. I'll read up on it.

Custom context-sensitive ... i think thats the thing with that code for hotkeys, the same thing. in diferent ways.
since im not a big fan of menus in any way shape or form ill just do it with hotkeys.

Allrigt, so I created a custom "Poly" marking menu and assigned it to a hotkey. Couple more ignorant questions. Is there a way to activate a custom marking menu without clicking the LMB (in addition to holding a hotkey?
And obviously i don't know how to get Mikkel Jans' script working with this.

You could use the CPS (Connect Poly Shape) plug-in tool box. The Mel Script for the plug-in is on highend3d.com. I like using that better than custom marking menus. All personal choice though.
