Used to get a feeling of scale, and proof of concept.

The young woman's traveling companion.

Nice snail! No critics so far!
The idea is funny, a human traveling with a snail!
Like the guy in the background. And the little girl might run in to some problems with the giant cutting the grass...:)
Best of luck!

...Or simply walking over her!
Will teh snail be her friend and just a companion, or do you plan her to ride the snail? The idea of a snail starting a life-long journey (for example to the nearest tree;)) is funny. I also like the snail model. Good luck!

Thanks for all of the encouraging responses. I don't know if anyone is familiar with the book, but a lot of the inspiration I have had for this I have drawn from Neal Stephenson's, The Diamond Age.
Anyways, I'm still trying to get a firm grasp of where I want to go with this, but I ultimately view it as a merging of two very different worlds; that is to say the more imaginative stories of my youth, and the cerebral reality of the present. I suppose the real purpose is to show the start of two journeys. The journey of the girl, (and the snail) have embarked upon, and the journey of the man, (the “giant” in the background with the weed eater) which finds them. I also feel that many times these stories are missing a vital component, which is the all encompassing journey, the trials, quests, and adventures of those around the characters, and the people that they impact. This is where I envision the man to come into play. I know if I were to find a bit of magic in this modern day world, my life forever would be changed. My personal journey forever altered.
I view this project as an outlet to disperse some of the cynicism I've grown into, and an attempt to capture my imagination again.
Thank you again for all of the kind words, and good luck to you all.

It's in homage to the book I mentioned above, and reads, "Young Ladies Illustrated Primer."
Yeah, nice book. Really cool

Worked on the snail a bit more, as well as progressed on some of his trappings.

Well, so finally you plan her to ride the snail... I`m afraid you should put a disclaimer "No animals have been harmed during..." under ypour final render.
Btw, I like the way you modeled both the snail and the stuff he has on his+her shell. (S)he looks like in a hurry! Good luck!

OOops... I`ve just noticed that your snail comes through his shell instead of protruding from it in only one direction. Is it an error or just tale-like modification ("licentia poetica")? I`ve never seen a snail with two openings in the shell.

Excellent point. I'll look into what it would take to change it tonight, though I may end up keeping it as is.
I don't know if I want her to actually be riding it, but I want the snail to be a kind of pack mule, which she can ride if necessary. (A slow escape, to be sure.)

Took some suggestions to heart, and think it's that much better for it.
Thanks!

Any feedback on the colors would be appreciated.
Also, the bridle and bit have been added since the last update.
I like the tan one better. Everything is shaping up nicely so far :)

Wow, the second one has a little bit military look;) I like him but will he also look well in the green environment?

I must admit, that I'm not too big of a fan of the shell itself, although I like the concept and the rest.
real Snails have beautiful textures on their shells, and I think atleast some of it should show through onto your work. Even if it's meant to be more cartoony.
check out this guys shell (http://www.rspb.org.uk/gardens/guide/atoz/g/gardensnail.asp)

agreed with what scootch said...
i would also like to suggest that you throw in some wear and tear details, to show signs that it's been travelling for ages and is on to another. just a thought... good luck! :arteest:

Absolutely, and good comments.
Currently I'm still working solely on modeling, (I model in staging). Details like the above should come out during Z-Brushing and texturing.
Great comments all. I'll upload some shots of environmental models.

I have to say I agree with scootch too. I think the bumps on the shell look a bit strange especially with that level of shinyness. Those smooth shells with patterns look nicer in my opinion.
This is cool otherwise though! Nice heads they've got and bags they've packed.:) Looking forward to the rest.
