After some careful thought regarding my concept for this piece and numerous sketches I've decided to create the biggest most bestest concept of them all: BEHOLD...PROTOMAN!! :)
Ok, ok, just kidding. I've modeled a basic low-poly biped to assist in the conceptual phase. I have several ideas brewing in my head. I'll be using "Protoman" to assist in compostion as my piece will involve at least one humanoid character. Next step is to move onto the concept.

SweD
03-11-2006, 12:35 AM
curiousity always wins ! before read this post, i've never heared about a "protoman"...shame on me maybe...i've call my friends google... and now i'm really curious to see your approach of that.

Good luck and have fun !

you should check proportions of your protoman, unless you wanted shorter legs than usual.

@ uiron: Not a problem at this point. I created him rather quickly so that I may use him in assisting with placement of character/s in my upcoming composition. Proportions and anatomical accuracy will be checked once I decide on character/s development. Hmm, I did use reference pics, however. Maybe it's the angle of the camera that makes him look odd. Nevertheless, no worries at this point. :)

Here's a front and side view of him. Hmm, maybe they are a little tiny bit short. I'll make sure to keep that in mind when I start modeling the characters.

Nice base mesh there Jedi :) Try carving in some muscle definitions next. I agree on the legs. Check with some refrence images to make sure he's ok before you start adding in details.

Ok...here's my first idea. It's basically the "Jack & the Beanstalk" theme. Using protoman as a stand-in to help with the composition. Don't know...this one would be difficult to set up a good vantage point for the composition.

More ideas to come soon. Gotta run.

Here's my second concept. It involves a magical world where floating islands and dragons exist. This image would depict a great dragon-rider army heading off to war. I don't know if this would fall under the beginnings of a journey...what do u guys think?

Third concept coming...

SweD
03-13-2006, 11:50 PM
In my opinion, the second concept is more powerfull for the epic side of the theme, with the starting to war. And find a good cam angle with the first would be effectivly difficult.
Wait and see...

Thanks guys for the encouragement!

Still trying to come up with a concept. I just want to be sure I am happy with the concept before I committ to it 100%.

I'll be trying some other ideas I have in mind during my day off of work tomorrow. I might even go back to the "Jack and the Beanstalk" theme. I've got a different mental image of a composition that I like better that incorporates a brother and sister team about to embark on a journey up the immense beanstalk. Gotta try it out in 3d first. I just might end up liking it.

Thanks and good luck to you all. :buttrock:

Ugh! I thought I was going to have more time to work on my entry today but it didn't work out. Only had enough time to revise my first concept. I think this looks a lot better. This time the piece would use two characters...a brother and sister team climbing the giant beanstalk. I like the camera angle a lot better. What do you guys think?

I think I'll try for one more concept piece and finally come up with a decision as to which route I will take. Gotta get into the modeling phase as soon as possible.

Your revised concept looks good. The camera angle show good depth and should work well when DOF is applied. I can already picture the lighting will also be a strong image selling point, especially on those leaves floating out.

Hey Jedi Juice, I really like your jack and the beanstalk idea. I know it's an old one. But when someone puts a new twist on an old story it can be fantastic. Personally I like the worms eye view better than the angle from above. I can't wait to see how the characters turn out.

I definately prefer your revised jack and the beanstalk to the original composition! I think i still prefer your second concept, but having said this, the jack and the bean-stalk idea is a great original one and could make a really stunning image! Also, although i love them conceptually- floating islands, flying creatures/boats etc are becoming very in vogue right now im noticing -so maybe going for the more unusal option would work better for you. -I think im trying to say i like them both a hell of a lot and either of these would make for a truly stunning image!

Ok. Seems like I received mostly positive feedback for the beanstalk concept so I'm giving it a go. :) Don't know if I'll incorporate the little sister into the image since I'm already falling behind as it is.

So...here's the beginnings of Jack's house. Still gotta add the right railing and, of course, more detail. Let me know what you guys and gals think. I'm not out of this challenge yet. :banghead:

Wooh! Been a busy week...very little chance to work on my entry. :(

Okay, trying to get back up to speed. Here's what I have so far on Jack's house. Everything's uv mapped up to now. That'll be my workflow from here on out. This things gotta get textured eventually. :D Yeah, getting heavy on the polys, but I figure I can always delete what I don't need once I get the proper camera angle. Crits welcome.

ChewyPixels

elmasfeo --> Yeah, still don't know about the chimney's. Still working on getting the whole roof finished. I'm aiming for a double flute chimney (I think that's what they're called). Might just end up leaving it that way.

se7enthcin --> Thanks! Still don't know exactly what it'll look like in the end but I'm definitely looking forward to the end result. Kinda coming up with ideas as I move along. :D

terminus_ad_quem --> Hmm...I just might try that out to see what it would look like. Probably would have to do that in compositing as Maya doesn't have fish-eyed lens. Then again, I'm sure there's a trick that'll give the same effect. I won't worry about it now, at least not until I get to that place in my journey. Work, work, work...!! :wip:

Update on Jack's house. Roof is pretty much finished. Still have to go in and optimize the poly count once I finish modeling the chimneys. Notice the missing roof tiles. Didn't need them there as other parts of the house will be in the way. Crits welcome.

M477 --> Yeah, uv mapping can be a pain in the arse. In this case, it wasn't as bad as it may seem. :)

As I think... a little tip to obtain an old roof slates tiles very fast in Maya... less than 1 mn...

 Awesome yet so simple technique, Lemog! Why didn't I think of this?

My technique is not so fast. I basically created one roof tile and duplicated it to create one row of tiles...and then duplicated this row and adjusted this row in relation to the last. Then, it was just a matter of duplicating these two rows. Didn't take too long, but your technique is SO MUCH better! Much, much quicker. Don't you just love how differently things can be done in 3D?

Thanks for the tip. I'm saving this for future reference. :)

Hi! Jack's house looks very promising indeed and it would definitely be nice to see some characters. On the view: I think you should pick the one you like and translate it to the viewers so it seems that they're climbing... if it's up or down doesn't matter - only if its in motion will it make a difference. On the details of the house : Because I get to work with a lot of architectural visualizations, I know that some of the detail are incorrect, but it doesn't bother me one bit 'cause this way it seems more fairy-tale and magical. Keep up the pace and the good work. See around.

Hťhť... good inspiration... I don't know exactly where you found that, but these chimneys appear in the same style than british one, on old manors, and especially with the chimneys on the Great Britain Pavilion in the Paris World's Fair on 1900... with a spiral shape too...

Womgoose --> Ahh...would LOVE to sculpt the mesh in ZBrush, but I haven't had the time to learn the app. Funny that I purchased ZBrush with the free upgrade to the 2.0 release and never got around to play with it much. Too busy trying to learn good 'ol fashioned poly modeling techniques, I guess. So, I'll be building him in Maya. If I had more time I'd love to use him as my first ZBrush experiment. Oh well.

Btw, love the look that your piggie has. Makes him look psycho. :D

Lovely ear you have made. Oh and...

Proportions love spot on to me, nice work.
Will you be heading into ZBrush with that base mesh or are you building it up in your modelling prog?

Of course I meant to say...

Wow your topology is amazing! I just made an ear and its a bit sloppier than this! There is a minor mistake though, if this is going to be a realistic style. The "Y" shaped part of the ear that terminate at the upper ear in a trianglar hole (fossa triangularis) isn't quite right. The upper apart of the Y structure should be just a tad bit wider and softer curve wise. The lower one has more of a ridge. But its a pretty small error. I don't know how you got the ear so clean. Everything is so nicely laid out, I may have to study this topology and see if I can learn anything for my ear model.

Simple screengrab. Thought I'd post my WIP of Jack's head. Not too happy with it, but it's still far from finished. I hope it gives an overall idea of where I'm heading (no pun intended).

I'd say...about 80% done. I still need to adjust the poly flow in the neck, attach the ears, and finish off with some overall tweaking. I'd like to also add some asymmetry to his face, but with less than a month left...I don't think I'll have the time. :(

I wouldn't say it's perfect, but I'm satisfied with it. I'm used to modeling everything in all quads. I think it makes the model more "clean," so to speak.

Ahh...20 days is not enough! :banghead:

With the little free time that I've had this weekend, I barely finished modeling my character's hands. Still have to uv map them.

My plan of attack is to leave texturing off until I have everything modeled in my scene. I just hope that I get to that stage very soon. I'll probably have to go with very simple texturing in the end just so that I can finish on time.

Wish me luck.
