Hey,

Having decided to learn a bit more about game development, I thought I'd have a go at creating my garden in a low poly manner! The reason being that i have all the reference i need seeing as it's outside my window *looks out of window... looks at work*

Seeing as I'm fairly new to this, i decided to not be that strict when it comes to poly count and texture sizes, seeing as i'm trying to learn as many techniques as possible with this excercise. but saying that, i'm not doing too badly!

**EDIT**
going to update this first post with the latest images. See my lastest post for details.

I say, make some more models. If its a garden, add a garden, make the plants, veggies, flowers, trees, add some ivy, tools, maybe a lil shed for your tools, scare crow, a bird house, a gate would be nice, to lock out those pesky Were Rabbits eating the prize carrots before the annual garden competition. :)

I like the textures, you could dirty them up, make some cracks on the stone tile. Maybe take out a wood plank from the fence.

You have clean mesh. Just keep going. There's really not much to critque about, maybe the two fence posts together bothers me.

Just dont be like me and build half a scene, then lose interest in it. I cant seem to break that habit. :(

I came into this thread expecting to see a garden. Well, keep at it. If you spend some time making low poly vegetation, this could turn into a special folio piece. Your textures look good. You may want to connect the fence directly to the patio, or at least push it in a little closer to the edge, unless you plan on modeling and texturing stuff outside of it.

edit: I now realize that in the uk, ppl refer to their backyards as "gardens".

thanks for the comments guys...

this is a wip piece.. and it is close to my garden so far. the gap between the patio and the fence will be full of pebbles. i'm also going to be adding a shed, a couple of plant pots, a big garden vase and past the garden fences... surrounding houses and a street light.

so much to be added... an update soon!

I like this a lot, it looks good and is well built. I'm guessing there's more to it though, flower pots, shrubs, etc?

Hey Simon, thanks for the comment.

yeah, much more. I'm just enjoying the whole learning process and taking my time, making sure i get it all right. there's more flower pots, hanging baskets, the surrounding houses (I might leave out our wheely recycle bins :))

more to come

I'm guessing you could get away with a lot fewer polygons for the legs of that urn; they're so small and dark that a rectangle with a bend or two would probably work just as well.

Hey. They're only 9 polys each at the minute anyway, any lower and i think it'll look terrible.

The Updates:

My house has been added (i'm sitting in the top left window *waves*). There's a little obvious tiling on the brickwork, but i'll break that up with more details. the drainpipe is still a WIP also.

so far, 1747 tris... is that good... bad?

All crits welcome

(just been reminded that i need to get this done before all that digital HDTV stuff is introduced else my poor analogue aerial will be out of date.... *hopes it doesn't snow*)

where is ghe grass, the dirt and typical garden things, like plants or a sandbox... i looks like a unused patio

i really like it but hes right needs some vegetation and grim. I would suggest a tree outside the fence the leans into the patio and also maybe a plant support box under the 2st story window.
Also you need to break up the wall texture a little. Since this is the backyard you could have something along the lines of wires going up the house onto the side, there are usually Elextricity meteres on the back or side of the house you can add in as well.

Looks good man, detail looks great, mesh is clean. Maybe like G0st said, and what i usually hear , is add more dirt to it, so maybe you can add some grime to the ground tile, and then some dirt / grime as well to the brick. Maybe even some weed's popping out of some of the area's of the ground tile, that would be cool. And maybe even some in the flower bed area. Again looks great , keep it up and look forward to more.

crikey, almost a month since the last update... i am taking this slow!!

Had a bit of a scare today. Max was freezing up and the viewport had a major drag going on. Tried resaving the scene as a different date to backup, same problem! It appears what i had done was by pressing 'M' trying to open material editor, i upped the iterations on a meshsmooth that didn't exist! pressed it quite a few times as you can see:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v236/arron/my%20cg%20garden/meshsmoothprob.jpg

Not so low poly that!!

Back to productive updates:

My neighbours houses added... skydome, and the flower tubs and hanging basket!!

All crits welcome

ok, just questions for now:

1. I'm going to now map my drainpipes (we have cool hobbies :buttrock: ). I was looking for peoples opinion on the best way of doing this. (hope this makes sense). On the one object, i need two different areas of tiling and one area UVW mapped. similar to the actual house, i could use seperate maps for the tiles, meshselect the faces, give them a different material ID and UV Map them.

What I'm hoping is that there'll be a way to have one map for all of it, select in the UVW editor what i want to be tiled over the selected faces? :argh: my brain hurts.

2. ok, getting round to grunging up my maps now!! I'm pretty sure i need to look into composite mapping. Now, let's take my houses for example. i want to mucky up my tiled maps only... the pic below shows the stack on my house and highlights the areas mapped with bricks! I've no idea how to approach using a composite map here, have i approached it wrong from the start?

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v236/arron/my%20cg%20garden/mappinQ.jpg

3. as for wires on the wall and clothing lines... what would be the best way to approach that, bearing in mind that this is designed for a game... renderable splines... i don't know!

Cheers for any help you can give!!

Don't forget the detail behind cam, this is still WIP.

C&C of course welcome!

looks good. Not exciting but still really well done imo. Looks like something you would see in the sims games.

well, i hope there is someone from EA on here... hiya... *waves* will work for desk to sleep under. hehe

no, not the most exciting of scenes, but it's always been my first delve into low poly work, wasn't going to start by recreating the whole of london or the moon, crater for crater.

I promise that my next work will be alot more exciting, hope to see you there.

couple of quick questions actually. When this is completly finished, i want this to be part of my portfolio for my uni application. so i want to get it printed... say a3 size. I know the best thing for me would be to visit my local KallKwik or something, but any advice before i get down there would be great.

wont keep you much longer. as formentioned, i'm applying for uni next year (mature student now... scary) and need to produce a portfolio. i have all my sketches and paintings and what not, but any ideas what i can include, game art design specifiaclly. I have ideas for a couple of games, would it be a good idea to produce some kind of design breif for these, sketch concept art, produce a couple of game assets... good idea, bad idea?

Thanks for the help folks
