Hi everybody...

good to be back in one of these nice contests. So here`s my first idea which came in mind after deciding to take part in this challange...

It`s about a small bavarian ant which loves to drink beer. So he went off one day to find the desires of his dreams...

BEER! But now that he managed to get himself one, the big journey begins... how the hell do I get this can to my "sweet home"...

tell me what you think about this first idea... c&c always welcome...

Hi Stephan, good to see you in!

The concept is charming! You could make that very emotional in a sort of cute way - very nice

...playing around a little bit with the view angle to get a feeling for the final comp... I think I gonna switch soon into 3D for more interactivity ;-) I think the idea is born... so the journey begins

Hi stephan , nice to see you again! concept look cool! and answer the challenge theme very well ! but now the main charactor look too small compare to the overall composition , like you said , you can adjust it in 3d ! good luck man!

...so after a wild night the original idea slightly got into another direction ;-)

Now it`s no bavarian ant anymore but somekind of drunken rasta grasshopper who definitely had a really "hot" night! Now the sun rises and he start`s to think about his long journey home... ;-) Maybe something everyone of us already experienced! C&C always welcomed!

And what will be the title? "A long way home?" ;):) Funny idea... and you`ve "released the spell" from our great and overwhelming theme... A huge and overwhelming journey reduced to a drunken-guy-way-home... Wow... Great joke! Good luck!

Hey thats a cool idea. Going home instead of a journey begins, its a nice twist. I like the concepts too. Are you going to try to maintain the color scheme the way it is in the final comp?

Keep 'em coming.

hehe, it's a very funny idea, you should gave him that kind of expression of "How on earth did I got here last night?" ((or even "I don't remember being a grasshopper... are you sure I had 4 arms before?"))

Good luck with it!

Climax: Hey now this is nice... Yep it`s my home now since I moved as kid from Geneva to Germany (now about 20 years ago) Pal I`ve seen you around these contest now since GSO I think... shame on you that you realized our bond only now :) But better now then never... :scream:

elmasfeo: thx & looks like you could feel with Mr. Rasta

papalatistudios: thx... gonna play around with the colors in 3D... maybe somewhen at the end :) But in first place I planed to let the kitchen leave in a dark bluish mood and the outside in a bright and warm color scheme. The idea is to give the viewer the feeling of "Hell I got to go home it`s late" "Damn is this my wife shouting for me" :)

Silgrin: thx... you just got the point right about that

Vedic kings: thx, man... nice short comment ;)

monsitj: Hi far away friend... yep you`re right I also thought about the proportion Mr. Rasta Grashopper should have... but for sure bigger!!!

Gunilla: thx... it`s gonna be very cute in some way...

Finally in 3D :-) This kitchen was a quick 3d modelling for the only purpose to get a feeling for dimensions and angles. Still got to play around with the size of the window and the "foreground element dimensions" like the top of the fridge. Not sure how big Mr. Rasta Hopper should be in comparison... c&c welcomed!

Cool concept and nice character sketch.:)

Good start on the modelling too, like the contrast in lighting you're experimenting with. The lighting might be slightly too yellow, or maybe it's because the sky is outside is very blue and midday looking. Generally you would get the more orange-yellow light only near sunset or sunrise.

Looking good though!

elmasfeo
03-04-2006, 06:57 PM
I think you should definetly make the window bigger, so that we can see better what's bothering mr rastahopper...
I like a lot the lighting you have there, this one's looking very promising

I expanded the window a little bit to the right and opened one of them... I realized then that the most windows do not open this way ;-) Got to think about an solution... maybe I just tip one of them? Oh, Mr. Rastahopper appeared on the scene! Had to enlarge the foreground elements slightly so Mr. Rastahopper got enough attention... C&C always welcomed!

Hi Stephan! Yeah, Thanks for following my threads :) it was from a while now that CGtalk put the real information below avatars now we can see where are we really all from :D

I see you are moving fast, good modelling though I think you should do the window even bigger and maybe put the camera closer to Mr Rasta looking to the outside so we could see the expression of his face and get a more emotional feeling of the scene, even you could get biggger beer cans :D

theuni
03-05-2006, 07:00 PM
Climax: thx, pal for the nice comments. Yeah, you just spoted my problem... I really don`t know how big I can still go with Mr. Rasta and the window until the whole comp looks boring again... but I thought about some different poses like leaning against the beer can, face half turned to window half turned to the cam... well think I got to experiment with it... oh btw wait for the next update there is even a photo of the wilhelma I took a couple of years ago :) homesick?

Vedic kings: thx...

elmasfeo: thx, well still thinking about the "outside" what it could be... maybe you guess got some ideas for me? In first place I planned some really nice looking summer meadow with a cornfield in the background a little white fence and so on... but I`m not sure, so... let me hear your ideas....

burpy: thx, pal... already adjusted the light a bit, but this is only to get a feeling for the comp later on the post production and lightning steps is where the whole scene will get it`s finetuning... and wait until you see when I get serious about this modeling step ;)

Claireabella: thx...

...throw in some more party guests! Did you think Mr. Rasta was a solo entertainer? But what`s that, oh no Joe didn`t made it! Well this journey isn`t but long, it`s also full of dangers! Also tried to get the max. size of focus of Mr. Rasta. I think more and the comp would get boring again. Maybe I increase the windows even a little more! Depends on the scene outside I guess how much I want to show... C&C always welcomed.

hahahaha u bet! ....Hey composition is looking great now! with Mr Rasta's Friends, I like the ones drinking beer :scream:
Don't worry too much about final composition, build all the models, texturize and set everything up, after that, it is a matter of looking for the right shot, you are right: if you make the composition now, you'll be sick of it in a week or two even if it was the one, so work every detail for a while, at the end you will have everything you need :wip:

OK, but if you change your viewing angle, and thus also angles of the lights in respect to the camera, you can experience the painful problem of materials getting worse... like I did just some days ago with my Blender project "I want to ride my bicycle":D. For me, it seems it`s much better to find the camera settings first and then to polish the materials and even poses.

theuni: Your entry starts looking really promising while the light becomes more than just a sketch. The only big problem I see now (besides it`s unfinished:)) is that I don`t see his way home! I don`t see his home at all... I can guess it`s behind the window but the window is very close... Maybe it would be useful to recall the idea from one of the previous sketches with the road mark "Home-->"... say, a road board over the window showing "Home 659cm 3mm" or so:).

Just guessing what would be most funny... And curious what you will choose. Looking fwd and Good luck! :)

LMAO! :scream: good one!

about what's outside the window.... well, I just liked what you had in your original sketches, if the light entering from the window is yellow, a cornfield would be nice (or anything yellow)... I wouldn't make it too complicated, I think that his house should be seen clearly... but I don't know...
btw, if you closed the window, THAT would be a difficult journey :D

Oh, the cornfield will be back again, promised... this was the plan from the very beginning.
A landscape, so nice & warm that you can`t resist of getting there. The image shown right now was only thought for Climax :D He know`s this spot, since he lived a year in Germany near my place. Ahh, house sounds good but could you please give me a hint how the house of an rasta grasshopper could look like? :applause: I also realized the "window" problem. euh..... an old abandoned boot? with doors and windows and the stuff to make it look more like a house, you know... you could pick anything and add windows and a chimney to it... or maybe a mushroom village...
...where would you like to live if you were a rasta grasshopper?

perfect modelling in that can... did you need a lot of references? ;)

Sorry folks for this mess! But after a good deal of thoughts I came up with something totally different... The sketch shown here is something which I planed to paint in the near future but after some bad personal experiences and stuff I don`t want to put here in my thread I got to pre-draw this idea! Otherwise I won`t paint it at all ;-)

So here`s the new story (warning, this one is very stylized and kind of romantic... think beyond):

This is the story about two persons, having a date at a "perfect day" on a "perfect spot". They fell in love and from then on their journey begins... maybe it will last forever ;-)

So I finally started to get serious with this trees ;-) Thought this would
be an easy job... but way off! In the moment you give those little trees in
the early stage some branches, they go off Kawwoo in your Camera view ;-)
And than again all this nice time comsumeing vertex picking. Well think I
gonna take them to ZBrush for a little bit more details but before I got
to correct some branch directions and sizes so back to gardener roleplay.

Also threw in a first rough foreground plane. There will be more little soft
bumps in it at the end, well at least that`s the plan.

Oh btw... the snake is no snake ;-) Just an indication of the road which is
planed at this place.

Also did some first experiments on the apple tree flower. Used a particle cloud for volume. I gonna show this in my next update... maybe it will force spring to come finally ;-) C&C welcomed as always...

...here is the promised particle cloud test with the apple tree flowers. Hmmm, nearly can smell the flavor of spring and love in the air ;-)

This little test showed at the end something about 3 mio. polys. I did a quick test on one of the trees and it ended up with even smaller flowers but more. I think I went up to 8 mio. polys for one tree. Guess I got to render them seperately at the end and comp them toghether... c&c welcomed as always.

This one is for gunilla ;-) as requested... a close up & a close idea of how it works. I split up the ground plane into now 20 segments all with 2-3 different typ of bend poly`s. Each poly has got about 17 faces or something like that. I scattered them with decreatsing amounts into the distance background. Now this is just "grass" ;-) and not much pretty at the moment so I plan to model some wild flowers and leafes. C&C welcomed as always...

Finally I took the trees into Zbrush for some basic structuring. There is already a noise bump map in the material to give the whole tree a little bit more fine structure but I think I will redo the whole texture as soon as I`m in the next step. For now itīll do.

May I introduce to you the male part of this love story. Since it is the first time I do something like a total human character you got to excuse... I think I must be the worst character modeler takeing place in this challange ;-) I could have gone for ages correcting the face topology but in the final the two lovers will stick together whilst kissing each other, sourrounded by a swarm of butterflies. No idea what will be left over from the two characters but I think after giving this guy some hair, a texture and a nice pose (maybe gonna correct some wild vertix in Zbrush... will see) I can switch to the female part of the story... C&C welcomed as always.

Hey, so this is what you've been up to! :) It's looking good so far! :bounce:

I'm working on a self portrait (as well as this!) and I've received plenty of help and advice from the principal artists where I work on modelling the head and face. Most of the advice is to use rings of polys in your model as much as possible where flows occur, around the mouth and eyes for example. If you get a chance to look at some professional character artists meshes you should get a good idea of mesh structure to the point you can 'copy' the basic structure and then tweak it to suit your own character. It's a really difficult thing to get used to and everyone has their own way of doing things but that is the most important thing I can think of. There are some great tutorials on head modelling if you've not seen any, have a look if you get a chance. I hope this helps and you don't mind me saying, it's just I've been given loads of help and should pass it on.

Bloody vertex pinching isn`t very intiuitive... looking forward to Zbrush and the finetuning... still don`t know whether I should texture the guy before posing him or do the texture job directly in Zbrush afterwards...
