Thanks you guys... yeah Eli A, I will be adding other " stuff " as you say ... as I said this is the first idea ... a little vague and I really need to refine the concept before I can move on ... best get into the character design I suppose

Started to model the base mesh for the frog ... here is a little progress pic, meshes of the frogs head in taken as I go.

I dont get it why, but the last screenshot you posted reminds me so much of Jar Jar Binks...
I am just saying that...Not as a goo thing, or bad thing...It's just a thing

However, I would really like to hear why would a frog would want to go to the city...
Nice mood you got there, btw.

good modeling on the frog s head
maybe you should change the concept a bit to see more of you character s face

"I would really like to hear why would a frog would want to go to the city..."

good point I really didn't think that one through very well. perhaps it's to save the forest .. I guess it's a little unclear at this stage. I I'll have a think and go back to the concept stage. maybe he wants to get a job. or save his lady friend, stolen for use as a pet... ( GAH! )

Nice concept and good start to the modelling. I do like the saving the forest idea though, maybe if you had a pipe spewing toxic pollution in the forest somewhere in the frame with some careful placement you could get that message across.

Good luck with it though, I'll check back on it!

Its looking pretty good, although he's looking a little like a man in a frog suit. Your displacement map could do with allot more displacement, Its all pretty uniform ATM.
Maybe he could have a small friend to carry his stuff ... Like a snail with pots and pans etc hanging from his shell.
His mouth is a little wobbly ATM
I would increase the size of his upper torso to support his large neck.

keep it up.

thanks Ajsmac ... I'll work on the displacment and bump a little it's only the first pass ... I had the snail idea in my head but not actually carrying anything .. I kind off like the wobbly Mouth .. and I'll look in to increassing the chest porportions a little bit and see what it does

Hey Kris,

I will follow this.... I think this will become awesome!!! How you are planning to do this city..?

Really nice work....

Kris-S
03-16-2006, 06:10 AM
Thanks Stefan ... I was wondering what to d with the pants; at this stage the texture is unfinished... I just painted some base colour but didn't get into the finer details wasn't sure what I wanted to do exactly ... I thought the spec looked a little high... cheers for agreeing

hey fish ... the city .. well I guess I will just have to start modeling it ... the idea is to have a complete contrast to the forest, I was going for a futuristic ish industrial look ... not to futuristic however something that could be seen in the very near future .. .. Planning to work on his facial expression as well... as at the moment he looks a bit scary.

Thanks for following you guys. With all this talent out there I'm starting to doubt that I can pull of a good image

cheers once again

I've never used SSS before so as a learning exercise I spent yesterday nutting it out and trying to produce a render that I am happy with ... this is what I came up with. ... Using a 3 point light setup, with an HDR image set subtly to help pull out the darker areas.. I'm pretty happy with the result

se7enthcin
03-19-2006, 08:31 PM
It has an interesting overtone but something about his eyes isn't sitting right. It could be a good thing or it could be bad. It's almost as if the lighting setup is giving them a strange specular halo. I'm not exactly sure. I cannot put my finger on it. Nice first attempt with the SSS shader though!

the shader network pretty simple I guess using the Misss shader for the specularity and plan flat colours as the epidermal colour, subdermal colour and back scatter colour.

I'm rendering using Mental ray ... and using the MIsss fast skin shader. tweeking it here and there sharpening the spec highlights to make it look more gloss/wet . basically its the same shader network I posted before . just tweeked the values and added a different texture.

I agree with the eyes. They seem "overexposed," if you know what I mean. They almost seem luminous. Maybe you can try playing around with it's diffuse and reflection settings.

You may want to consider:

Decreasing the saturation of the leaves

Making the Slug bigger

Reducing the amount of spec on the frog

Cropping the comp in more

Making his clothing a different color (red or blue) its looking a bit too green ATM

More Leaves and vines

Yep.

cheers Ajsmac ... will work on most of thoughs points ... adding more leaves and vines however will have to add them to in the fringes of the comp .. as I still want to see the city in the background ( when I start on it ) ...

the eyes are being a real probelm for me, don't know why. will look and see what it is that I have done. it might be something to do with the lighting ... can't seem to figure it out.

Hey, first time I've seen your thread, it's a great idea and coming along really well!

I like the idea of seeing the city in the distance, but also it's a bit of a shame because you could have really good fun with depth of field - almost like you (as a human) have spotted this journeying frog and taken a photo of him on the branch :surprised Just a thought :p

that is quite a good idea ... he does have a little cought in the headlights look about him... yeah the depth of feild thing is a pitty, I might make two veriations ... one like you say .. with a simple blured image in th background and focus on the frog himself and make it look like it was shot on a 35mm camera, whith depth of feild and such. and another based on my original concept and see which one comes across better.

thanks man .. there are a few posing issues with both him and the frog .. I will look into it as soon as I open up the file again..

i think the leaf on the back of the frog should be a little yellow so the frog would stand out between the leaves...

I'm hoping to be able to make the frog stand out a little more with lighting .. I also hope that the background will punch him out more if not then I will rethink my leaves ... I'm going to try and change the colour of the frogs pants as well to see if that helps.

thanks again you guys spot ya on my next update

Interesting city. I think you are getting some of the "industrial look," If you were to add more pipes I think that would do it!

Hey, nice progress! Really cool cityscape!
And I love your close/solo render on the snail! To bad you want see him closer in the scene
But ofcourse we don't wan't him to take the attention of our hero frog:)

Keep it up, this is going to be a good one!

been playing around with the lights clouds and scale of the city ... trying to make it look vast by adding depth... most of this was rendered in Maya ..even the clouds which are two planes with a fractal shader mapped onto them. Rendered the clouds separately the then composited together in Photoshop and then with a little painting here and there I came up with this.

the city should be unflatten ... may be...

Excellent and moody image, really creates the atmosphere. But I have some uncomfortable impression that there are two suns:P One behind the clouds, and the second one that lights the front buildings shining from the left. Don`t mind if I mistook some your idea, just wondering:) BTW, the clouds are extremely excellent if they are just procedurals!!

Kris-S
04-21-2006, 11:53 PM
yeah the clouds ..um :hmm: the first one was done procedually .. the second one is a mix of procedualls painting and a photo I should have said that onthat image .. the proceduals just wern't working it for me.

Zazai: unflattend?? sorry don't understand what you mean here? you saying it looks a little flat? to front on..

burpy: cheers man thanks

oceanbluesky: thanks man

Silgrin: cheers I think you might be right there is light from behind thanks for pointing that out.

using the exisiting renders and photo shop I put together this little composition test.... not that happy with the pose on the frog and the fact that he dosn't stand out enough yet .. the lighting on the trees dosn't help ... and there isn't enought of them ... in the middle of modeling the tree's they havn't got enough leaves on them and I rewlly wnt to get accross that this frog is in a forest not a park in the middle or near the city. the city could be angled down a little more so that you can see the landscape better and give it a better scenes of distance...

anyway just thought I better post some more stuff ..

cheers Guys

I don't like this composistion. It looks like you have two competing perspectives. I think the buildings should be rotated away from the viewer more, so its more eye level.

I like it... you could try other positions for lightning.. try puti a omni light on right corner... with iteration 1.2.. and a other one on the background of the character with a green-light color and iteration 0.300 (only for the character), I think it could give a focus on the character... well IŽnot sure... but...

No worrys about the shader network it's really the same as what I found on these forums

layetut What are your initial thoughts with your choice of color tone?

well I want to make the cit look uninviting heance all the smog and rubbish and stuff.. using a brown / orange haze I think gives it a good balance between overly smoggy and tonal veriation. I have tried to use blues and greens and purples for the background but each looked a little to sick or to happy so orange/brown seems to give it a good un iviting effect yet still look viberant and more alive.

I hope that that was what your after.

barbapapa & Jedi-Juice thanks guys  ... with me flying to LA ( from New Zealand ) next week to go to E3 I'm going to have a huge chunk of time taken away form me to get this finished... I hope I can get it done in time. ( i;m only there for a week and a half but good things take time )

Oh very nice. Love the soft blurring of the vegitation in the foreground. Really nice. I like the way it feels clean and uncluttered, yet like we're taking an intimate peek at your main character. The flip really helped too. You might just put a little bit of greenish-yellow lighting on your character to make him stand out just a bit more. Like a peek of sun through the vegetation.

Well I think this is finished. Had all these ideas and well it never got round to them.

The story .

This little red eyed tree frog is on his way to see the wider world the environment that he’s in isn’t the best anymore due to the larger and more wasteful and resource greedy human race that is slowly but surly destroying the environment in which this frog lives. So he’s off to see what he can do about these human who have a clear disregard to the forest and its creatures. .. They call him Trevor
