Hi all, and welcome to my battle thread ;)
I don't have any concrete idea for the challenge. I've tried to "invent" sth, but I don't have any interesting thing that I could paint. For now I've got three conceptions for the Challenge theme explication:
1) Space-shuttle start (hmm... too normal? )
2) Pirate ship loading
3) Moment of death - woman laying dead on a bed ( :D ), and a spirit leaving the body. Prapobly side-wiev.
I'd really like to make sth wicked, so I'll try to think about other idea.
Wish me luck ;)

First Line art. I've changed my conception to a snail looking for some food. Few centimeters is not a big distance for human, but it means some hours of "walking" for a snail.
Hope you'll like it ;)

Some color. I'm not happy of the effect at all, so I'll try to change perspective soon. Especially foreground will change.

luv it.
i want to see more of what's catching his eye. until i saw the diagram i took it as a more wistful staring into space thing. is this his untimate destination or a goal on the way?
great idea for a character,

Another camera view. I think that I will stay on this. I've used some referals found on google and sxc.hu, but many things will change at all.
anzibon - propably it is the ultimate destination. But, who knows? maybe snail is hungrier than he looks ? :D

I've decided to not paint branch. Everything will be placed on the ground. Snail will leave tasty grass to find out how mushrooms taste. Maybe I'll add some snail-opponent on the mushroom, or a mushroom-picker hand going to pick up snails dinner.
comments are welcome.
hah, second challenge, and a mushroom! again! :D

I've decided, that a snail doesn't fit to the "journey begin" conception at all.
I've got new idea - little girl looks into the mirror and sees other world (just like Alice :D ) - she is so fascinated with the colours, that she decides to visit this weird place.
nothing special, but I'll try to redress it with colours and details.

I' still fighting with trees. Bark is the most haten forest/foliage thing for me :D I think that whole image will take more work that I tought :/
Hope that next update will give much more changes :) Keep thumbs for me ;)
Hehe, another mirror concept! :D. This looks great man, I like you'r textures - what kind of brush are you using?
Drakula
03-13-2006, 12:19 PM
This is not only a brush. It's some kind of technique, which gives me a textured-brush effect. How I did it? It's quite simple ;)
1) I made a "foliage brush". Just like this:
http://img132.imageshack.us/img132/5022/27se1.jpg
2) In use of this brush I made some mossy texture (it was made for underwater plants at all, but it seems that it's universal ;))
http://img206.imageshack.us/img206/7255/32fn.jpg
(it's only a piece of a whole testure. It looks better when you will colorize and brighten it)
3) I've defined this texture as a pattern. Then I've made a textured layer (pattern overlay in layer style).
4) Whole effect is taken by painting in use of this brush:
http://img206.imageshack.us/img206/5936/11et1.jpg
5) Example effect:
http://img154.imageshack.us/img154/6720/40xp.jpg
nothing special ;)

Additional details :> I've also changed contrast. I think it's more realistic now.
Soon more updates ;)
Thanks for the "how-to". :) Your forest is superbly detailed.

mhmmm it's very similar and I don't know if it's a matter of chance, but well I hope you didn't dare copying the original one
Drakula
03-23-2006, 12:08 PM
lol, you're trying to disqualificate me, or what ?
It is similar to Mime's picture, because I'm using it as a ref. I really want to get similar mood, but I'm not copying it. LoL, how could you think like that ? :D
My image will be done in the same style, with similar mood and lightning - but just because I love this picture. Don't forget, that I'm going to make sth like a forest in the "Alice in the wonderworld", so there will be some flowers also.
I really don't know what were you trying to reach by this post ;)

wtf...
dont worry Drakula i think its fine...it doesnt look anything like the other picture...its like 100% different...no problems!
and by the way im loving the new details in the back of the picture...its given it a little more depth...a little for for your guy to explore...great work on the textures too...
its really turing into a great painting!!

And some dirty planning.
I decided to change tree placement. Hope it will be better ;)
Red ribbon added for a test. I think it will make this picture more mysterious and bouncing. Red firm fits to everything ;)

very impressing the way you use textures.
IŽd like to see the two last concepts combined. I like the rocks but you loose much of the depth and atmosphere with a wall covering the whole canvas.
Good luck

i like them both but the second its i have to admit alot more dynamic and interesting :)
the rocks were a really good idea to add some interest to the picture and as everybody is saying the textures are really cool :0
the new lighting is also a really good start :)
cant wait to see more on this version.
