To gain a decent demo reel you have to spend a lot of money buying rights from big studios to show the big movies in the reel. You know, Maxon could put Spiderman, The Mummy 2, Gladiator, Inspector Gadget, Star Wars 2... But why should they spend a lot of money? ;)
