Well I hate to disappoint anyone so if you guessed that I would be building a bunch of toys setting out on an epic journey you are correct! Believe it or not this time I have a really solid mental visual on the layout and theme of the picture. But I dont want to spoil it just yet by telling you what that is. Instead I will follow my usual modus operandi of modeling first and developing the scene layout second. Besides I change my mind a lot and sometimes end up hating a project if I lock down the final look at the beginning.

He's looking great - nice expression - what size is he?

soapy
03-03-2006, 05:17 PM
Makaron, he is the first of a clan of heroes. Thanks 3D. Gunilla this little guy is about 3 or 4 cm tall and yes he will be cheap plastic with a shiny metal helmet. Music sounds good! The body will be a little more organicly shaped once I pull out some polys. More on the storyline coming right up, I changed my mind on saving it.

The story at the moment:

A horde of bucket head critters who ride hotwheels-like cars who are about to set out on a journey to return the queen of plasticland from the Snakelord empire. The queen consists of a plastic barbie-like doll head and body parts which will be towed on hotwheels cars. Scattered around the area will be the aftermath of an epic toy battle, body parts and broken bits littering the area. Included in this area are chopped up toy snake bodies. The scene will be set outdoors on a knoll or balcony. Fading off to the right will be a vast city dropping off in elevation below. The near foreground will be a concrete gutter with maybe some other set objects such as faux greek ruins and statuary toys. Reflected in the bucketheads helmets will be massive buildings.

a true mr Soapy story :applause: this gonna be so fun to follow... :bounce:

soapy
03-03-2006, 05:45 PM
Mike, yes I always rig. For this guy I just started, he only has some bones in one arm, (still in symmetry) and you can see that the deformation is not too good. A few knife cuts and some adjustment on the bones should give me a better looking turn on the arm. I just wanted to quickly turn the arms to fit them in the picture better.

As for how much I will rig this guy I don't know yet, for sure arms, fingers, feet and toes. Maybe mouth and eyelids too.

(e.g. compare the feet to the hands.) Thanks Crin, believe it or not I usually try and make my stuff as photoreal as possible. I do the best I can to make these look like 'real' toys. But I hear what you are saying and I agree why make 3d photos when you can use a camera. As for the character I will be doing some more work to bring the rest of the organic part of the model up to the level of the feet. So more work to do yet.

Hey thanks shakes. I am pretty happy so far. Sometimes it is pretty hard to take a crappy little line drawing and convert its essence into 3d.

Looks very velvety.... :D (is that a word?)

soapy
03-07-2006, 06:39 PM
Thanks everyone!

I agree Gunilla, I will do something to the hat. Some dirt for sure and I was thinking of seeing if I could add in some swirly colors also. I will have to test.

Yes Handlebar I wouldn't mind getting some too, hahah. Like Gunilla says I have sort of gone to a new level but I have mixed feelings about it. They are beyond what you can get as toys and a bit unreal that way, so I am thinking of them as custom built toys I guess. Plus my intended scale is about 2 inches tall so a lot of finish is packed into a little space.

3dE, you dont want to see him with his hat off, he is totally hideous.

Hey velvety works for me Mike. It just seemed appropriate. The velvet is a cheen shader.

Nobody mentioned the lack of arms on him... do you think they should show? Dangling down, maybe holding something? Or maybe the hat should be longer?

shakes
03-07-2006, 07:02 PM

Gunilla
03-07-2006, 08:06 PM
I agree - he looks good without arms. I can also picture him with his hands folded behind his back - a bit selfrighteous if you get the idea. Or maybe a loop on the top of the hat, as for hanging somewhere.
Love it!

dalmanna
03-07-2006, 08:12 PM
yeah man this is looking sweet, cool little guy, how long are these taking you? you seem to be lightning fast.

soapy
03-07-2006, 09:38 PM
Ok good, I will leave off the arms unless needed. Loop, Gunilla? ok maybe with a tassle too? Noted, I will look into it later. I am starting a new model tonight after work.

Dalmanna, the first took about 3 days for what you see. I am not sure in hours how much time though. Maybe 10 to 15 hours? Dunno. They are pretty simple models. The second went faster than the first since I recycled parts of the meshes. You will see similarities in parts of the models as this goes on. But I am getting faster now for sure. As you know we have to start from scratch for each contest and after 5 challenge entries I am sick of making hands and feet. hahah, but I admit that I am a little better and smarter every time. Oh yeah, these fairie boots are the second pair I've made in as many contests. bah! If you look at my spectacular thread you will see the other set. 2 pairs of fruit boots! oh the shame of it....

For this contest I am doing the models in speed modeling mode. No hands wringing over every point and poly. Just wham, bam, boom and done.

Thanks guys, Marty came out not too bad. At first I loved him, then I hated him, now I am ok.

Makaron and Shakes I will take some time later and try and work over his textures and paint in some different colors etc. I picked the blue at first cause I love those blue guys on Star Trek, but there are lots of possiblities.

There are some other issues I was thinking about working on. Like should I move parts of his face back from the inside of the helmet? Should I add some more gak to the outside of his spacesuit? I might try putting a gradient on the goggles like those cheesy sunglasses from the 70's.

Zapan I am shooting for building about 10 or so different figures. I want a fairly bustling scene.

Hey 3dE I started out with the intention of making cute figures but they just seem to mutate on their own. hahah

No problem Mak, I hope I didnt offend you? They all have arms sprouting from their ears. I have a really old character that had arms growing out of where his ears should go, and I guess I got nostalgic on this contest. And actually I am going to build some new old toy cars, so that will be another trip down memory lane.

Oh BTW, if anyone is confused by some of the posts here, it is because 3DE and I decided to edit some of our posts. We got carried away making crude wisecracks.

Hehe, that cyclops can become real sweet! How about making his bubble/helmet with a very strong IoR - like for strong glasses, so his head (or whatever is under it) will look very tiny? Thats a great idea Gunilla, it would look really funny I think. I might have to rebuild most of my model to make it work though. I will look into it. It makes a lot of sense that he would have a lens to protect his only eye.

Hey Daddymack I am glad to see you in the challenge! cheers.

I see now that in my enthusiasm I rushed the modeling upload for this guy. Like the Curly model there will be a lot of changes to modeling by the time the texture render goes up. The helmet is going to get a lot of dents and possibly a lens. The thumb bones are wonky I need to fix that. Teeth and nose both need work. Anything else guys?

I gotta get me that hair module. Does it deform well with your model and bones? Yes it works great, the hairs follow the polys they are attached to and react to any physics they are undergoing. You can use collider tags to avoid intersections. There are lots of different ways to control the hair. It is pretty idiot proof, I managed to get something useable out of it in no time. But I am no expert yet.

hahaha, I wonder how did he got his arms inside that helmet! His arms pop off so that was no problem, but for getting his head in he had to use a lot of vaseline...

Hey thanks everyone for your kind words and encouragement.

Andrew, that little notepad was made locally here in Calgary, a rare thing. The place is called Luscious Urbane Eclectics. I have a habit of buying little notepads and photo albums when I see kool ones. That one is 3 inches square, perfect for a pocket.

Matt, yeah a canvas cover would be cool but I but time is a factor and I suck at material...

Womball, the 'Born to Kill' helmet is from Full Metal Jacket the Stanley Kubrick movie, very kool. I thought about maybe doing something like that I dunno yet. Or I thought "Burn em, if ya got em" might be good. Or, "Born to Smoke". Any ideas guys? The helmet will be getting a full going over given time including more stickers, rust, etc.

Shakes, yeah I am enjoying the hair module. I had a little fight with it on this guy but it works pretty well and isn't too hard.

Gunilla, I tried to add curls and such but the hair kept coming up through the helmet and I haven't mastered all the intricacies yet. Eventually I hope to get a better grip on hair.

Mark, you know I've thought the same thing myself in the past but have been using symmetry a lot lately and just plainly forgot this to fiddle after fixing the symmetry. Thanks I will do some messing with this guys head.

Mike, I guess I will be flipping back and forth now. I got stuck on the renderosity contest model I was working on and got fed up and switched back to this. So I will go back and forth a bit.

Thanks again everyone. More models coming soon. See you at your threads. Cheers.

The first toy car design. Actually my third attempt at a car the first two I didn't like very much. The scale of these in relation to the bucket-heads is pretty small. So they can't really fit in the cockpits, so they would ride them like go carts or motorized skateboards.

I think I had a couple of these when I was a kid. :p Great job on the modeling, they have a very sleek feel! I am looking forward to seeing your little army ridding around on them! :buttrock:

I went with red for now but that might change later. White is pretty cool too but didnt show the scratches as well. As you can see in the close model there are some texture errors, but I will only fix those if they show in the final.

lovely... :applause: the scratches is a perfect touch, and the red is how I remember my kidbrothers toy-sportscars...

You've really got the toy car look. I'll chime in with the others and also say I love the scratches. Those car 'features' like the engine showing out back, the padded seat and the air inlet on the side made me smile because they're exactly how those early toy cars would make them.

Thanks folks. I am happy you like the first car. I will be building some more later.

Handlebar, yeah a VW love bus sounds good. I was thinking maybe a woody wagon too.

Gunilla, a chopper! kool. You know they actually make hotwheels choppers now. >>edit: it turns out they had hotwheels choppers a long time ago, they are called Rumblers.<<

Shakes I might put some decals on some of the cars eventually. Most of the early Hotwheels didnt have much in the way of decals. A few of the race cars had numbers. What I should do is figure out how to do that kool metalic paint they had.

My cars will mostly be based loosely on hotwheels. I had them when I was a kid. The very early ones that is. I was thinking of going out on ebay or whatever and buying some of the cars I had. I don't remember too many I had for sure had except a couple. One in particular I remember cause it was my fastest car. It was a purple Whip Creamer. There is a mint one on this collector site I saw and they are asking 395 USD, hahah. My nostalgia faded quickly... I think I will buy Zbrush instead.

Great work on the texturing! You did a great job setting up materials that look like they would be on a Matchbox car. :buttrock:

The textureing looks fantastic Soapy. Gawd your takeing me back some years, i had a collection of hotwheels too, if only i'd kept them in their original boxes and not played at crashing them in every possible way, i would be on a good investment.

Very nice texturing! Perhaps some greasy fingerprints could add to it?

And good desicion in getting ZBrush instead of the toycar - I'm sure you'll enjoy it! So, what's next here?

Looks like a cool character! In a very discouraging and a "what are the odds" case of events, the video cards on both of my computers fried a couple of days ago in a thunderstorm. I'm doubting that I will get to finish either of the challenges like I wished. Oh well, I'll keep my fingers crossed that the new G5 lands on my doorstep soon. Keep up the good work.

Wow, I'm another one getting all nostalgic about Hotwheels. I had one when I was a kid - a Custom Corvette, and it was my fastest car too. Then my dad invited his boss home and the boss brought his kid, who stole my Corvette. Now, if you're out there, you know who you are... On a more relevant note, the Snakelord looks really cool. A slight change from the earlier style, Soapy, your son seems to be a marvellous influence.

Sorry guys, I have sort of been lurking around lately. Not doing a whole lot of 3d and the stuff I have been doing is for the rendo contest... I am not liking my chances of putting anything decent together for this thing. We will see.

Bummer about the comp 3d, I am glad you got it sorted though.

Bummer about the lost hotwheels Mark. hahah. Mine all got burned, exploded or otherwise destroyed by my brothers and myself.

Hey thanks guys. They have extended the deadline for the renderosity contest until april 30th. At the moment I have gotten taken with it again. I got fed up with it for a while but now I am absorbed with it again. Plus there is other bad news for me. We are leaving town for a while on May 20th so that wipes out the last week or so of the contest here. So I will have to be done with my work here by the 20th of May. That is part of the reason I have decided to throw myself at the rendo contest.

By the rules of the rendo contest I am not allowed to show wips. I guess I can tell you that so far I have built a rubber ducky, a toy killer whale, a pink pony, a troll, a toy frog and I am working on a realistic frog. They are built like actual toys and not so much in the soapy style. They are fairly cute and I am hoping it will be a pretty cool image anyways.

Some people have already posted some entries at renderosity but mine isn't up yet.
