Thanks,
I feel welcomed now. It is cool to see that 2D isn't such an underdog these days.
Personally I have been VERY impressed with the work in this side. Not to take anything away from our 3D brothers and sisters.

Well, here is a first of a few ideas that I have for this challenge. There is a bit of a backstory I have in my head. But I will let people think of their own.
Anyway, I will continue to think about stuff.
See ya soon.

The background definitely captures the eye, I find it difficult to focus on the main character on the path as they are over powered by the scenery. Perhaps a more intimate view of the person as a point of focus?

Well hey there folks,
Thanks for dropping by. And thanks for the kind words.

As for the image. I think the suggestion of making the figures larger is a valid one. However I think I will try to keep them as small as possible so that the landscape has more power. The point of the illustration is to show how the journey ahead is looming before them. The possibilities swallowing them. I am sure I can find a balance between the importance of the scene and the importance of connecting with the characters.

I still want to explore some other ideas that I have.

Be sure to speak up reguarding any ideas or crits that you all have. I am always interested in what people think and how they interpret the images.

Thanks again for visiting. I will try to make it worth your while

I like what you have so far and understand wanting to keep the figure small, my only suggestion would be to bring the figure closer in. I think the hardest part of this challenge is trying to balance the background "journey" aspect with the character. Good luck and great start so far.

Hi everyone,
thanks again.
Adam. Thanks. I don't start with paint any more. what I've done here is just regular old Photoshop. Nothing special. The only thing is that I come from a traditional painting background, so I tend to work in the same way digitally as I did in the old fashioned way.

Thanks for visiting.

Here is an other idea.
If I decide to go with this one I would most likely change it to a down shot and foreshadow the wiches house a bit.
I also need to do some better research in the Bavarian costuming and forest. though, this forest is pretty creepy as is.

It's pretty much been said already but that latest concept has a great sense of foreboding and a atmosphere of brooding evil in the forest. Love the shadow shapes in there too, great subtle touch. Subscribing to this :)

I was planning to chose the same kind of idea but It's really disturbing to see someone else who has already chosen the same mood
my story is about a little gnome or elvish kind who is leaving is golden, and warm village to enter into the dark and heavy forest to conquer the world because he is the youngest and the most courageous of his kinds
well anyway good luck :)

Yes, as some already said the atmosphere/mood is good stuff.
The only thing is: emotion with the characters is a bit missing..
Maybe wonna put the boy more close behind the girl (hiding), so you right away see he's scared...

Good stuff tho! Keep it up!

briliant sketch and idea/// if you are to go with this one might i suggest you change the colour in the woods from blue to a more forboding colour.. reds, orages ? at moment the forest looks inviting,, like nice elves and fairies be in there

Well hello there everyone!
I am stunned by the resonce to this one. That is a good sign that I am on the right track.
I still have another idea or two to get out into the concept phase to see how it might work.
Also I might do the Hansel and Gretel in 3D. I haven't decided yet.
Keep a look out for my next round of concepts.

And on something completely different. Yes, for those who are wondering. I am still working on my short film. I am slowly building all the sets at the moment. I have a number of them mostly done and a few that I haven't started. 2 of the 4 characters 99% done and the story is finished. I have a working animatic that I have been tweeking for a few months now whenever I get the free time. I really want to nail down the animatics before I get carried away with animation or anything. I have been doing lots of film studies to really hone my camera work and cinematography skills. It has been a great journey and it is only making me a better artist. I have taught myself a great deal about film making on Retro-Active.
I hope to share it with the world some day soon. I don't want to hog it forever.

Well, it's a total NC Wyeth ripoff right now, but I liked the idea. I would ultimately change it to a horizontal composition and do more of a full scene in the clouds.
I just banged this out in order to get the idea down on paper. Well, virtual paper atleast.
This was actually the first one I did just to get the creative juices flowing. I mosty likely won't do this one because it is SO "inspired" by Wyeth. But I thought it would be nice to see my process a bit more. You know, for the kids.

Hey everyone!
Well I am leaning towards doing Hansel and Gretle in 3D. So I need to find a cool one for 2D.
I think I will pick one that would be more logical to do in 2D, like a scene full of clouds for example. I did another sketch today, but I can't upload from work. Stupid firewall. Anyway, keep an eye out in a few hours.
I still have some more ideas. I just need to work them out. We have some time so I am not in a hurry. I am having fun thinking about it. It is also good to hear what people say about the sketches.

Well here is yet another idea.
Please don't lood at this for catle design.

KOryH

Hey FlyingP,
I am glad you like 'em. I feel the same way. I just need to fix the compositions and I think They are ready to go.

I have been out of school for almost 10 years now. YIKES! That sounds crazy. Anyway I have been working digitally for about 8 of those years. I took the first two to make enough money to buy a computer! As far as speed goes. I am really good at getting this far and then I have to slow down for the polishing.

See YA.

Xillion
03-04-2006, 08:02 AM
I love the colors of your environments. The last idea is very original and starts a metaphorical journey but it is the title that explains it. The hansel and Gretel one is evocative by itself, so I think it's better.

keep it up!

Zycho
03-04-2006, 08:18 AM
Wow, you're a machine!! One good sketch after the other!! I like the last one, but as Xillion said, its the titel that explains it. I also like the NC Wyeth inspired picture. Very nice composition and lighting. The kids really feel small compared to the big sky.

But still I must say I think the Hasel and Greta story is the best.

what greater journey is there than Homer's Oddysee?
Well, I am sure we will find out durring this contest! there are some great ones out there already.

if i were to pick, this one has a more powerful depiction in itself...

all your sketches are great, but in my opinion, the one with the tree scene doesn't show that they are about to go on a journey... it's more like two people enjoying the shade of a gigantic tree... where as this roman/boat image, it's clear that the people are about to embark on a journey, plus the fire on their city supports that idea...

just my suggestions...

perhaps you're just giving the other challengers a chance to win? :D kidding! :applause: :scream:

best of luck!

Very neat stuff, Kory! :buttrock: It's really good to see that you (also) get inspiration out of fairytales! To me they also are a great source of inspiration on moments that you 'just don't know anything else anymore'!

The 'Hans & Gretel' concept looks really cool: you can play allot with the mood and atmosphere, and you also can put little nice details around. The oddysea concept also looks nice, as it gives you a feel of 'the desperate need to get on a journey', and it also speaks really good for it selfes. The image of the tree looks really nice and warm. You could make a very nice final image with a great mood in it. The only problem is, is that it might seem to be a bit 'simple' (when comparing it to your other concept), but it will mean that you can make it more perfect! :p

Have fun and find luck! :)

Alright, I think I decided to do the dorky castle one. But with some major changes.
I will do a sketch later this week. I have to slow down an do some real work for a few days.
I think you guys and gals will like what I am planning on doing. I am going to steer away from the typical European castle thing and go for more of a Russian/Eastern deal.
I will also push the caslte back in space more in order to imply a greater journey.

Oh yeah, and if you want to continue to follow the Hansel ang Gretel saga, be sure to check out my 3D entry. It will be countinued there

Wish me luck and thanks for visiting.

I really like the colors so far.. only thing that bothers me is that the tree blocking the background traps the viewer on this side of the tree and isolating the mountain range... It's a beautiful tree, but i think the branches shouldn't go all the way to the edge of the cliff.

good luck!

First congratulations for all these concepts.
I personnaly prefer the hansel and gretel for his ambiance and the last one for his composition. MAybe a little light very far coming up like you made for the very 1st one.
For the others. I like the 1st but in a same subjet the last is better.
I find the one one the beach a little out of the subject. The one with the boat is too classical regarding to your impressve abilities. And the one with white castle is too near from my concept :scream: ( in term of composition ). and as you'll do it better than mine... No seriously, it's not my prefered one.

Good luck (but do you really need it?)

edit : Oh I see you'll make the castle one. So well comments for nothing. Never mind :scream: And happy to see you make hansel one in 3d.

Wow such an international place this is. I have always been amazed by this community.
Thanks for the kind words and suggestions.
I got a chance to do some good internet browsing and I found some really cool building ideas. hopfully I will get a chance to put a drawing up later this week. Any tips for cool castles that dont look "di$ney" would be much welcomed.

Thanks again.

Mr.Clip thanks for those.
Very cool. I have seen those before. Except the Irish one. No offence but I get so side tracked by those cool Scottish cliff castles that I never get around to looking to Ireland.
Now if were creepy rocks sticking out of a field with mounds and shit, well then, the Irish have that covered! heh.

Thanks again

Awesome work KOryH!,I also like the best the first concept from Hansel and Gretel, but it`s only an opinion, all your sketches are priceless. By the way Paperclip, I am doing myself a castle and I have found your images very helpful, thank you very much.

you've got a gorgeous use of colour in the concepts, very refreshing.

odd-i-see is my favourite, though the last one looks great too(love the light & the epic scale of the tree in that one)..tough choice :)

hi.... I really impressed about your concept sketches... looks like you already getting very far, when you do your concept sketches...

My favourite is the Odisee picture.. it gives this vast epic journey (over the sea..) a real meaning..
although I love what you did with your colour work in 'Take a bite' ...

So, for my opinion, go for the odisee concept with more saturated colours like in 'Take a bite'.. :scream:

Hi Kory! What an amazing set of sketches!? I can every one of them being up with the winners!!

I've gotta say that the Hansel and Gretel image really got me excited, so i'll look forward to seeing that one in 3D if that's the plan. (i think i'll go and have a look now to see if you've started)

I love the use of colour in these, the importance of scale for various elements and the different atmosphere each of them has. Can't wait to see your castle!

OK here's the deal. I really did't feel I was being creative enough with the last round of concepts. I even started working on refining the dorky castle. But you know what, It was DORKY. It had been done before. I really didn't need to do it.
SOOOO I had a brain storm last night and I decided to change direction. What I am thinking about now is a companion peice to my GSO entry. Some of you may remember it. It basicly depicted a futuristic Chrisopher Colombus making first contact with a race of small aliens on a jungle planet. Well I thought it would be cool to show some more of that story.
In the drawings that I have started I am trying to depict one of the small tribal guys,a scout, leaving his village to investigate three mysterious streaks in the sky. In my head there is something a bout a prophesy and rips in the sky or some such silliness. For me it is good to have a backstory of some sort to help with the illustration. That way I always know what the motivations of the characters are and it helps connect with the viewer.
Well, all that BS aside I will have some new sketches for you soon. Ithink this will fit the challenge quite nicely and also be part of a serise, which could be cool.

Thanks for reading, Bye.

Yes, very beautiful indeed, but also here, I miss some "travel" ingredients. Although the picture is already very, very pretty, there is nothing really that indicates that it's about a journey.

Good luck - I think you'll be able to make something very good !

Hello!
Good journey for your, first of all :)

My fav concept is the Eden, with the big tree, lots of space to be explored and very tiny characters, but i would suggest they could be a little bit bigger, they go almost unnoticed. The expression you've used to visualize it is also very interesting.

keep it up!

Thanks for the continuing support and comments,
I have been a bit slow on the re vamp. I will try and work something up this week end. I have done some sketches, in pencil and away from the computer, so I have not been a complete slacker. Just lazt in that I haven't bothered to scan anything.
anyway soon I will have something to show.

your color palette is very lively, attractive. i like the feeling of it. but i think caharacters are too small. it is hard to read them as first humans coming from eden.

OK finally a sketch for my new idea.
I've got a lot of work for this one to pull it off, But I have faith in it.
I think it's kind of cool that it will be part of a series. I like doing things that feel like they are part of something bigger. I hope that when people look at these they can feel that there is more to the story.

thanks.
I was looking a bunch of reference and some of kaashyyykk was in there. Honestly I was just happy that it didn't look like Endor! Anyway, I still need to figure out a good concept for the buildings. How they might work and what the contruction could be.

Tigrenka-- good question. I am hopeing that the way the groups are layed out in relation to the main guy will give a clue to the emotion of the event. we will see how that turns out.

Hi there,

You're wright: it feels like a part of something big. But that's giving it a little bit trouble in terms of the story. The subject of the journey that is about to begin is not perfectly recognizable, although you see something going down there..
I'm telling you this because i tend to do the same "mistake" with all of my works. They are much like some sort of a trailer or teaser for the actuall storyline instead of the real illustration of situation being told.
After i spent so many days on my "Journey", i realise that it's a bit too abstract for the viewer. But then again, i'll stick to it. I always liked teasers and trailers much more then the actuall movies (Godzilla, Independent Day, Phantom Manace).
So, maybe you shouldn't listen to me and just hit the canvas the way you want...

Best regards and big respect,

Khan alias Chupacabra

thanks everyone for the nice comments and the great feed back.
I am still thinking about the staging of this one. trying to get the scale of the environment and the emotion of the characters is going to be a challenge. i really need to sit down and do some thumbs to work out the composition. I also need to finalize the design of the tree village.

nice concept. It has a really nice atmospere with great colors. At this point i find it a bit hard to read only because of the sketchiness. Cant wait to see this one developed.
