Woohoo! A new challenge, and what a great topic I must say.

I'm very busy at the moment, but I can't resist these challenges. I hope to be able to spend a bit more time on this one than the last one, but we'll have to see.

This is a quick 10 minute sketch in Painter. First idea to pop into my head was some miniature hero leaving his idyllic sunny village and crossing a bridge into ... the wastelands and beyond!!

I've done a quick colouring too... to follow...

Here I've splashed around a bit of colour.

I might go for a childrens book illustration style here - I like the cutesy mammoth type steed.

Anyway, I'm off on holiday for a couple of weeks now, so can't work any more on this until I get back!

But I wanted to submit something before I went :)

Good luck one and all!

LOL - Hi guys, Squibbit you posted the minute after I entered! You must live in this forum, man! I'm already looking forward to reading your thread ;)

Walrus - Hey, thanks for the welcome - good topic, eh? I can't wait to see what you're gonna do :)

FrozZT - Cheers! I hope to devote a bit more time to this challenge. Work and Dofus really ate into my spare time during the last one...

The style is lovely and the contrast between the sunny village and the wasteland gives it that special something. It'll be nice seeing this pic evolve :)

Thanks to everyone who left comments while I was on holiday! It was nice to come back and read them :)

Here's a bit of a reworking - started again from scratch, all very low resolution and rough.

I wanted to give the whole image more of a sweeping, rounded feel, with the landscape undulating away and some more interesting angles for the horizon and foreground. Not that the perspective makes much sense, but I'm going for a bit more of a cartoony / illustration thing here and I reckon I can use some artistic license...

Yeah! this looks pretty good Jesse!

Love the perspective that you talk about and that's the beauty of cartoonstyle: anything is possible! Rounded, "the landscape undulating away" is very good..

Great piece so far

I thought the last concept sketch had enough potential to carry on and work on it a bit more!

More people bustling around celebrating the departure of their hero. The feeling I'm trying to convey is of this transition between a warm, familiar, idyllic country scene and a frightening, confusing, unfamiliar place.

Who knows what the hero is leaving for? Perhaps he's just picking up the mail? Or maybe something more traditional like going to rescue a local girl kidnapped by some evildoers?

One of the feelings I get from it at the moment is that the hero has been 'volunteered' by the rest of the village. He's bigger, tougher - the obvious choice, so he feels obliged to go through with it. But is he happy? Absolutely not!

the characters are spot on here. great emotion in the main character. Composition wise, i'm a bit concerned that the journey looks a bit short. I'd push the castle into the distance more. i'd fade it a bit and add a few more hills in front of it. anyway, other than that, it's top notch!

Ha, excellent, I missed this one. Superb characters. How about having a couple of them pushing on the beast's butt, trying to get it moving in a generally heroic direction.

Hey Jesse, good to see you again. Really fun idea, love the humor in it.

Very funny, good taste of humor. Especially i like this new "unvoluntarily hero"-Expression on his face :applause:

Since this is stated as a coloring wip i still donīt know about the colors though. The bright green of the gras bothers me a little and by and large i would say that the colors donīt go together that well. Hard to put the finger on, maybe you should just play around a little, checking out the possibilities.
