My idea, I'm thinking along the lines of having creatures that are part robot. They are trying to escape from the wacky scientist who has been slicing and dicing them.

This is idea 1 for my colour scheme, as you can see it's very rough.

Lovely pastel shades there Madalaine, though IMHO the starkness of the browny black makes it look a little muddy - are you planning for a pastel toned image, or are those the highlights? Nice to see some sketchyness :)

Katea: Thanks :D

beelow: :p haha I really hope I actually finish this one. I got lost in the last challenge, this seems to have more specifics to aim for :D

Elsie: Thanks :D I see what you mean about the brown, I was also worried about it looking muddy. I'm not sure if I'm going to stick with the pastel shades, I'll work more with the composition and try some more colour compositions as well.

Thanks for the support everyone, I truly appreciate it!

Feels too pastel for me. When I look at it, I think the figure is a part of the mound. It definatley has a feeling of contemplation to go on a journey, but it doesn't quite evoke a sense of movement toward a goal just yet.

Haven't quite figured out the story yet but goes something like this:

Something was sealed long ago, something that has the strength to wipe out every race in the universe.

There have been plans to open this 'something'...

Ok so this elf comes from a line of time travelers...it is her relatives who originally sealed the 'something' and now the elf (who has no name yet) needs to go back in time to find out how this 'something' was sealed.

Coming from a line of time travelers, she has the key to activate the statue (who also doesn't have a name yet), the music played by the statue calls forth the elf's soul taking the elf back in time, whilst her body stays in the present.

I hope that makes sense...

I'm chaning my idea...again.

New idea: Within the magical kingdom there are good and evil creatures. These two sides are balanced, where there is one evil deed there is a good one to balance it out. However, a demon has found his way into the magical kingdom and is bringing together all the forces of evil in order to make the magical kingdom and the human kingdom as one, creating havoc and destruction that will evetually lead to the death of all things that are pure and innocent.

One of the many psychics in the magical kingdom has a vision of the scenes fortold. They see that the only way to destroy the evil is to bring together the purest elements in the universe. Their combined powers will be strong enough to destroy The evil.

One of these elements is 'innocence', found in children who have not yet lost the power to see the unseen.

The images depicted here are of two children who have the purest of innocence, found by a fairy who takes them into the magical kingdom. I want to capture the amazement on their faces, whilst the fairy has an expression of distress.

now...which do you think will work best image A, B or C?

Thanks for your support in advance.

HAHAHA, i guess you're are as bad as i am for being indecisive. Glad to know i'm not the only one :D

I really like idea4 B. My only suggestion for it would be to maybe tilt the camera more to the point that it is looking a bit up (so you can grab a bit of the sky) and use a wide screen for the composition. I think that would push the depth of it.

Thanks for dropping by the way. I'll keep checking and see how you progress.

enialadam> Good luck with this, go the Brits:bounce:.

Colour's tough, I usually try and blag it by using greyscale first, get it working tonally, then overlay a colour layer (which can be changed at any point to alter the mood) and go from there... Hope that helps

Work ur, values in so u can get a good transition from the foreground to the background, b4 u get in to detail, If ur unsure about it post it hear, I don't want to see u have failed attempt in the end, but sometimes it is good to fail, in order to succeed, but we don't want that do we? No! Good start so far. Strong contrast in the forground less in the back, usually light values! Good luck Madalaine! I will be keeping an eye on this thread! Yur heading in the right direction!

I agree with the above posters re: values. It's the biggest 'gap' in your painting so far.

I like your concepts, you just need to play around with the composition and values to get something that does them justice. I liked A more though.

Elsie
03-04-2006, 10:43 AM
I agree that the values can use a little tweaking but I like the composition - I think the long, tall format works well with the hole between the rocks. What I think it is - is the eyeline. It's not high and not low, so it doesn't really give that 'epic' feel - how about placing the viewer really high up, looking down at how small everything looks in comparision with this wall of rock, or looking up with it towering above them?

Great going so far

I have a second idea that I am working on. Just trying out some colour combinations. I used painter for these. I couldn't get the composition right in photoshop I don't know why, and yesterday I got soooo frustrated.

So today i thought I'd give painter a try and gosh I found the brushes so much better for this kind of sketch :)

I think I'm falling in love with painter hehe. Also listening to music really helps set the mood :)

03-05-2006, 03:50 PM
I like the one at the bottom to the right... It has more atmophere after my oppinion... I think the amount of warm colors suit the fantasy tale the best (dragons and such).

umbrellasky
03-05-2006, 03:54 PM
Zycho: Thanks :D

I've probably confused people a little but (lol) I have two ideas I'm working on. The first one is the 'magical kingdom' and the second one is what these images are about. I will reveal more about it:

My idea is 'An artists journey to finding inspiration'. I've thought about all the things that inspire me, I adore forests, golds, and reds, I'm also hoping to have mountains in the distance. I'm going to paint and artist walking through the forest with her art materials in search for inspiration :)

Working on the values. I've added a figure, I want her to be walking through with enthusiasm, I'm also thinking of adding a small companion :)

The girl artist I guess is a reflection of me somehow, I know this is becoming a personal piece but I'm more interested in enjoying this challenge.

'An artists journey to finding inspiration'. I've thought about all the things that inspire me, I adore forests, golds, and reds, I'm also hoping to have mountains in the distance. To make it clear the girl is an artist she will be carrying art materials, perhaps a shoulder bag and a camera will be hanging over her shoulder.

Faras
03-05-2006, 08:44 PM
So, if I get it right (and I hope I do), the girl is an artist who sets out to find out - as my free arts teacher calls it - a paintingly adventure of colours.

p.s; like the small companion idea, and I'm glad you're just in for the fun of it:bounce:

More work on the girl :) I'm quite happy with the pose, I have a few ideas in mind of what's going to happen around her.

Does anyone know any good brushes in painter for painting foliage?

Thanks again everyone!

The saturated colours look good, although you may have to lighten up the foreground with a little reflected light to avoid having your characters back-lit. Can't advise you on foliage brushes, I'm afraid, I tediously paint bit-by-bit.

Very nice, I have to admit I think you're very brave to do all that foliage :p
Like the way the red coulours jump out of the more darker ones.

Keep it up and seeya!:wavey:

I really like the use of bold saturated colours and i see you started working on some details. Looking good so far.
Just a question about your character, is she a young girl or a teenager?
Oh and about her anatomy, her neck is a bit too thick compare to her body. Plus i'm not sure if you are doing it intentionally, but her head is on a side view, but here body is on a full 3 quarter view... I know its just a sketch at the moment so you can ignore me for saying it, hehehe :P

be back again

Hi Madalaine, Great idea for the journey! I love the fantasy aspect and the big bold and colourful background you've proposed will be look great behind the characters. There's going to be tons of detail in your painting it looks like but it will look really good once finished I think. Lots of trees and foliage to paint!

Great start so far :)

oh yay, arent florels like this so FUN? :| i have to do this for mine too, and im already dreading it, it looks like you got the hang of it though, I did this one technique in one of my earlier pics and it turned out really nice! good thing I forgot it..sigh...but awesome job, I like the lush colors, it reminds me of a garden I used to go to with my mom when I was smaller.

nice :)

looks fantastic. the re's 2 ways to light up dark area on plants, first reflecion usually lets plants have blueish (or whatever sky reflects on the surface) highlights,

since those leafs are wet u can well see that its the sky reflecting on them
http://www.molluscan.com/reuben/pictures/YELLOW%20FLOWER%20MARCH%202001%20DAIRY%20FARM.JPG

or yellowish transluscency (or whatever sunlight shines trough the leafs) and causes inner bounces, a so called subsurface scattering, in short sss. this is what causes ears in a backlitten situation for example to glow red :)

in this case you see both colormixes.

hope that helps :)

Not many changes here. I'm still working on the environment. I have also changed the girls pose I found a great reference here: http://auralis-stock.deviantart.com/

Sorry for the slow updates, It's a busy time of year for me, my art course ends in July which means we are busy finishing off units and such, so a little crazy right now.

Thanks everyone for the support :)

Agreed. Very pretty colors in the setting, but the woman is getting a bit lost in there. Maybe a strong rim light from all that sun at some point...? Good luck, with the piece and coursework.

I'm still building up the forest, gradually lightening the forgroud.

I hope to have some sunlight breaking through the trees eventually.

I'm also working on the character from time to time. Unnfortunatly I have been short for time recently, as I mentioned, lots of college work haha. I have two weeks off now, easter holidays woot! So I'm going to try to find time to work on this.

BaronImpossible: It's wonderful to have a master's advice. Thanks for the tips, I really appreciate them!

walrus: Thanks! I'm hoping to gradually have the light pouring through , so the girl will eventually be better lit.

triumphant: weee thankyou for the support! :bounce:

W-I-L: Yep I have started working on some sort of mountain in the distance, it's hard to see right now. I'm hoping to have something more there to give a better 'journey' feel. Thanks! :)

Chupacabra: Thankyou! It's wonderful to have people being able to relate to this somehow. Thanks! :)

I really like it. The foliage has such energy, I hope you can keep this energy and dynamism as you continue to refine and detail it. I also love the array of natural colours.

I prefer the foreground being lighter as it is in your latest update; however I also prefer the image flipped the other way, as it was in previous stages (e.g. COLOURwip3).

Coincidentally, I'll be catching a train for Weymouth tomorrow morning, for a little 3-day mini holiday thingy. :D

You've made quite a lot of progress since I visited here. Madaleine those colors are to die for and definitely should inspire any artist. I am about to visit Paradisio here , a place am told should inspire any artist. Keep going :)

Skin tones are hard, especially on arms!!

So here is another update, only small. I have changed the girl...again, wasn't happy with her other pose. Still haven't done more on the kitty hehe.

This seems to be taking me forever, I keep coming across lots of gaps in my skills.

Any crit, tips or thoughts are welcome Thanks so much! :)

I really love the colors you are using and the light, Although her expression isn't fully defined, the girl looks like she is looking very curiously at something, I wonder if there is going to be something special at the spot where she is looking :)

COol. very nice colours  and the character's gesture is getting a lot better. I'm liking the grass detailing so far too.

About the character, maybe its just me, but i feel that she's not relating very well with the environment that she's in. Your environment feels more like a very enchanting, secret garden kind of feel to it, because of the colours that you are using and she feels more like a modern person wearing a t shirt and pants... i dont know... maybe i just need to learn more about the story. So its probably just me, hehehe.

be back again mate.

Xeophex: Thanks!! :D Hope you had fun in Weymouth hehe

Queensoul: Hiya! Thanks for stopping bye :) I'm really glad you like this so far. I hope you are having/had fun on your trip!

ramy badie: Thanks Ramy! I'm glad you like her expression, I've been finding it difficult.

Arc80: I'm glad you like the grass and pose.

She is wearing 'normal' clothes because she is jsut a regular artist, who is in search for inspiration, I wanted there to be a contrast between her being normal and the magical-ness of her environment, if that makes sense?

I considered putting her in a skirt (because it seems nowaways girls generally wear pretty skirts in paintings, plus they are easier to paint IMO), but when I go walking through forests and over hills, I don't wear skirts hehe and I don't suppose many other girls do.

This artist is set and ready to find inspiration, and she will be taking all that will help her find it.

Thanks again Arc80 ;)

Thanks for the support everyone!

Oh okay, now i get it. Then you should check out the movie "what dreams may come"... you know, the one with robin williams going inside his wife's painting and whatnot. I think your idea has a pretty similar feeling to it. Plus there are some really good imagery that might inspire you as well :D

check back again.

Thanks everyone for the support!! I truly appreciate it.

As much as I enjoy these challenges, right now I just don't have the time to work on my entry. I also wish to use the free time I have to work on some of my weaknesses.

so I guess this is kind of me saying that I'm pulling out, it's not definate but right now I can't see myself finishing this piece.

Thanks again everyone!!

Hey Madalaine love the colors in this comp...also enjoy the portraits in your portfolio. Coming from 3D it is hard to believe it only took a few hours to do the one of Emma (interesting approach to coloring too). Best of luck!

Hope you are able to find the time -- perhaps just a few hours! -- to pull something togther...the palette of this image has so much potential. Best of luck!
