Hey there. So far the idea is to depict a small-animal character about to set out on a yourney flying a bird, packed with goods and whatnot. So far its still concepts, and early ideas.

Hey there, and thx for the kind replies - I like that you like the idea.

Its gonna be really hard to make that bird, but thats what this challenge is all about: strive to do what you thought you couldnt=) But i'm not sure its gonna be a bird though... could be another kind of flying animal.

Been going through alot of ideas on the subject, and made out some rules I want to follow. For example surely the direction of action (or the sign of comming action) should be against the right side of my picture (left thought right is positive and a sign of something thats moving forward, instead of right through left... visa versa ...bla bla ). furthermore I want to have my characters be seen somewhat from the back, since this will give the impression on how the character is antizipating the future travel, which is seen in the background, instead of seing him from the front, while seing what the character has left behind, in the background. Did that make sense?

anyways... will update soon again!

Hey there. Been working on some character sketches. Heres two different go's at a character.

So far my idea is either the high slim character or the compact bug-character. so far its only sketches=)

Basis idea and position in picture. Playing with composition and evirioment.

The actual idea of a yourney doesnt come through in this sketch. Im still working on different ideas on the actual yourney.

Ive begun playing around with the idea of mechanical (ofcause made of alternative material) things instead of the bird.

hey there. Havent had too much thought on the challenge the last weeks, but heres another go at a sketch. I wanted to be sure that I have a good foundation for the picture before I begin to do any 3D.

This sketch is alot more cormic-styled, and will require another character design (which I have developed. Will post it soon).

I would like to hear if you find this sketch funny. I want to focus on humor istead of dead-serious super-realistic characters and envirioments etc. so the humor will drive the idea and story of the piece. This sketch has been the funniest idea spun on the lady-bug theme so far.

Hey rasamaya. Im glad you like the first sketch.. I like it too=) I think though, that it will be very hard to make really cool - atleast it takes alot of work to do the evirioments, and in the end I think I dont think it will be any better than a more simple piece.. And then I simply feel more in the mood for moddeleing cartoon characters=]

So I started modelling the characters. Not much to say about this.. kinda selfexplaining.

Ive been sketching alot on the picture, and come up with new (and hopefully better) ideas, build up around the idea with the rocket.

Very nice characters and compositions work.

I think that your last composition has a lot of potential, i see what you want to show through this one and the humorous part can really works, i think this will be more funny with details like face expressions of the 2 characters and maybe something new that will make it even more funny...something that could telling us he shouldn't go...dunno, maybe more thing in the background (in addition to the moon...)... hope you see what i mean :)

I'll keep an eye here :thumbsup:

Again, pretty boring update (no color yet!).

Ive worked on the arms and the legs. Trying out with 6 limbs.. I think that its more charming and funny.

cipher@ I have worked on the idea with the rocket, and come to the same conclusion. I just need a scanner, and you will be able to see the new sketches i've worked on.

Tigrenka@ Thanks. I hope I can get the idea propperly laid down on the paper (or should I say screen?)=)

Komsa @ Hey thanks, im glad you like it. I don't think I like the idea of antennas. Tryed it out in the first concepts, and it didnt work out the way I wanted. I think its better without them.

So far I havent been able to scan the new idea for the picture. I can tell that its not a bit less boring as the current rocket-picture here... add some spice and you got it=) I hope I can get it posted sometime soon.

Hi. Its been a while since last time. Im working on the character still. Not much to say really. Ive worked on the eyes, tweaked them so they were a true sphere, and did some detail to the face around the eyes.

Im still not sure if the actual body is going to be this half-dull brown which I have now. In its true form it should be black, but I dont like that. White doesnt work too well either. So right now im stuck with this desaturated brown. Maybe ill add some blue tones to make it seem more dark.. dunno

Hope you like it=)

Well the evenings work. Some textures and some uvs have been laid. Hopefully more to come tomorrow!

Superb model, very good, and very cartoony!
Specially i like the way you have used the same style in armor and hands and legs. And because you gave the character longer hands/legs and longer neck it is just great to animate, cant want to see some moves and emotions if you have time to do it!!

Hey. So the bug is nearly finished. I only need to texture the arms, and then give it a little rig, together with some headshapes.

Ive added a sss shader to the back, and I think its working okay. atleast it gives the idea of it being translucent.

Im really glad you like it, and I think its gotten alot better than I had thought it to be.

Hey there. So the textures is done on the bug!=) Made a little rig, and heres some poses. Hope you like it.

Ill add a blendshape to give the other bug some different personality, but I don think I will make a different texture.

From now on its plants, rockets and whatnot!

I like "him" very much, Thomas...;) I would also like to be able to do a "fast" rig, as you´ve done for this guy here....I really miss to se my dragon in a pose

It is a really adorable ladybird you got there.
The last one (the one with the lighter) has a perfectly goofy and surprising look.

Wow.. Didnt expect so many replies.

Thanks all. Im really glad you like the character! From start till now my idea really has moved to be more character-driven, and ofcause combined with rather difficult situations.

I hope I can capture the stupidly hopelessness in the character, which the last update was kinda a test off, in the final image.

Ill have the next update ready soon. It got some rockets.. craaazy rockets:)

Hi there.

As you can see in the picture, I have put the sketch into maya. Im working on framing etc.

Ive changed the idea of the picture to be a more "history-told" situation, instead of a "soon to come disaster". I think this is working better, and gives a better feel of the situation.

It may be a bit hard to see in this render, but the idea is, that a car accidentially have lost a package on the bumpy road, which is filled with rockets. The bugs use one of them to start their short but epic yourney=)

More to come soon!

Good scene setup. I think it's clear what the story is. I actually had something similar in mind in the beginning, but I ended up with something completely different.
