I'm starting a project series of models in the line of the japanese feudal armies around 1500. I'm starting out with the base mesh of a japanese man, and will then dress him in the clothing of 10 different ranks, such as daymio and taisho. The purpose is to use the renders as avators of a rank system on a competing Belgian cg forum. I started out modeling the head, but I'm in need of decent reference. I can't find good closeups of japanese male people. So I started detailing the ear. Here's what I've got, all comments are welcome.

Thanx to Syomka, I admire his work and was inspired by his renders on his thread on the human body

That ear is the embodyment of bushido! :D

Looks good, though.

Keep it up!

my critics is that the ear seems to be missing an earlobe and it seems just a little too much to be sticking out of the head. My ear is below

It's definitly hard to find reference of Japanese people. I'd send you my mug but I'm half caucasian.

Anyways now that your done the ear, Now you can start the eye!!!

Thanx for that ref, Kimoto. I'll certainly start the eyes now.

To Mihkeltt: there's two types of ears, some people have earlobes, some don't. It's a part of your DNA... And I'm not sure if it's actually sticking out too much, you'll see if I can show you the head...

To ThirdEye_01, 3DZealot, Rmortis and Isrithe: thanx

I started on the eye, but it's extremely hard to place the eye, if there's japanese people amongst you who can make some reference shots like Kimoto did, please, help me out here...

I'm gonna need some anatomical corrections, not sure about the position and size of the eyes for example... I need to add the detail, I just wanted some structural approval...

I think the ear shouldn't be so far away of the eye but maybe I'm wrong, otherwise it's a good model.

Well, it's based on reference, but I'll check it out

Looks really good!
but yeah I'd have to agree, the ear is a bit too far back and the jaw is too long.

No problem for the ref. I didn't make it though, hehehe, just d/l from google. I'll take a look in the archives or some mags for more.

Hmmm... perhaps the wierd distances are created by a wrong proportion, I'll try find some more reference

Yes, it looks great! How many polys?

animalunae

Jee... it's cps, so the base has 798 faces, which is then duplicated and smoothed out and then has 6420 or 25680 depending on the subdivision level, let's just say, I work at the first subdivision... that's split ones, the other is split twice and way too heavy for modeling, use that for rendering it out...

Wow.. that guy looks spiffy! Lotsa character potential there.. his nose is a bit strong for an Asian, but not wrong per se, could pull it off... but the head.. there's something kinda funky goin on with that head, could you post a profile shot that shows his whole head?

Hi Derbyqsalano,

Just curious, do you model the guy from a reference photo? Since us asians usually don't have high nose bones. Usually the nose are more rounded, well, you know :)

Or maybe it's just my nose, heheheh :p

Just a comment. *Great* work, tho.

Here's a side render, I tried detailing the eyes some more

and some more other renders... think I'm going to start texturing... need to move on...

In what sense is a japanese nose rounder?

The ear looks fine to me. Its going to look too far back until you get it textured. The ears look perfect in a front view, its just the side and oblique views that make it look too far. Don't worry about it, its just perspective without other things to measure distance with.

Dude, you're getting there with the eyes, but the face proportions look like a white guy. Like someone said, you could get away with it, but if you want to base lots of different guys off of this model, you might want to make it more recognisably Japanese.

www.fineart.sk has some great front-and-side head shots. I superimposed the lines of their chinese head on your model. See how the eyes and cheeks are further forward, the bridge of the nose is lower. Ok yours is a guy so you want bigger brow ridges, but the forehead, and the face in general, is flatter. The lips have a rounder shape. Also see at the top of the eyelid, there is an indentation, just below the brow. I don't think she's japanese, but it at least shows some areas to work on.
